Celtics-Sixers preview: Don't mess with Ish Smith

http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/celtics-sixers-preview-dont-mess-ish-smith

WALTHAM, Mass. -- No matter how eloquent or impactful the “take no opponent lightly” spiel that players facing the Philadelphia 76ers hear from their head coach, NBA players aren’t dumb.

They have seen a Sixers team the past few years that has lacked discipline, focus and a desire to win games on a regular basis.

The Sixers still have plenty of room to grow, but they are not that team anymore.

And the reason?

Ish Smith.

The five-year veteran, acquired via trade from New Orleans shortly after Jerry Colangelo was brought aboard to bring some credibility stability to the Sixers front office, has been pivotal to elevating the Sixers into being a competitive team of late in what is his second stint (he appeared in 27 games with 14 starts, for Philadelphia last season).

Smith has appeared in 13 games (all starts) for Philadelphia this season, averaging 16.5 points while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range along with 8.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Since joining Philadelphia on Christmas Eve, the Sixers are 5-8.

While that’s not overly impressive, consider this: before his arrival, Philadelphia was 1-30.

“Ish Smith has given them a great injection of pace, kind of an energy that they had before but he’s given them a little swagger,” said Celtics head coach Brad Stevens. “I think people just buy into it and it’s contagious. He’s done a good job. They’re playing well.”

Stevens knows a thing or two about adding a high-impact, difference-making playmaker and what that can do to a team.

When the Celtics traded for Isaiah Thomas at the trade deadline last year, it didn’t take long to see why Thomas was a player that Boston president of basketball operations Danny Ainge had his eye on for quite some time.

Thomas, a free agent in the summer of 2014, said the first call he received was from Ainge which Thomas said afterwards caught him by surprise.

The Celtics had Rajon Rondo still around and had just drafted Marcus Smart whom many saw as Rondo's heir apparent.

Boston went 14-7 last season with Thomas on the floor, the kind of surge that catapulted the Celtics into the playoffs.

In terms of being a difference-maker, Stevens says he does see similarities between what Thomas did for Boston and what Smith is doing for Philadelphia.

“I think the impact is pretty similar based on the first few games,” Stevens said. “Isaiah came in here and the way he spread the floor, the way he got into the paint, the way he made plays for others, you look at the last 13 games he’s (Smith) in there, they’re shooting 36 percent from 3 and that wasn’t the case before that. It has a lot to do with his penetration. Now you got him in the paint. You got (Jahlil) Okafor and (Nerlens) Noel in the paint. That makes life better for (Nik) Stauskas and (Robert) Covington and (Isaiah) Cannon and all those guys.”

Amir Johnson has seen the Sixers lately and readily admits they will be a much tougher challenge for Boston than most might expect because of their improved play.

“They’re playing a lot better,” Johnson said. “They’re pushing the ball a lot faster. They’re not that team … we see a different team. We have to keep the right mindset, play the right way the whole time or this team is going to … whip up on us.

The Patriots take it down to the wire, but fall a little short in the end.

On to basketball . . .

Tommy Point for Sully. On the floor he makes the forward pass to IT, who gets the +1 off Jah.

Someone (Bradley?) yelled "Short!" on Bradley's 3, which was nothing but net.

Off to a good start.

Why are the Celtics in home white and the Sixers in their road blues if we are in Philly?

Yeah Bob, losing to Manning makes it even more painful.

Good evening all. Taken me a while to get over Pat's loss. If I feel just think of how Steven Gostowski feels!

Oh well, on to basketball. Nice win last night over Cavs, they are are just not with it right now. LeBron has to whip them into shape.
