Celtics-Nuggets Preview: Celtics in elite company

http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/celtics-nuggets-preview-celts-elite-company

BOSTON – We’ve often wondered this season what the Boston Celtics would look like when their offense and defense were clicking at the same time.

Look no further than their last two games, both of which were victories by more than 20 points apiece while limiting their opponent to less than 100 points scored.

It was the first time since October of 2009 that the Celtics had back-to-back wins by at least 20 points.

Even more impressive was the fact that both were on the road against teams that, while both Philadelphia and Washington have had their struggles this season, were playing some of their best basketball of the season leading into their matchup against the Celtics.

Just as the Celtics have lately made a point of playing their opponent and not their opponent’s woeful record, a similar mentality has to be in place tonight when they host the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets (17-28) have been a streaky team all season, with losses in four of their last six games, which came after winning three of their previous four.

Boston has also been an up-and-down team most of this season, but seemed to have found a winning groove lately.

And what makes this stretch of play different than previous successful runs by Boston, is how they are making life difficult for opponents at both ends of the court.

Boston has won six of its last eight games.

Within those eight games, Boston has taken a league-high 92 shots from the field while making 41.8 of them, which is good for the third-best mark in the league.

The Celtics have finally started making some 3-pointers, too.

In the last eight games, Boston has averaged 10.5 made 3s, which is good for seventh-best in the league. Boston also ranks in the top-10 in 3s taken (26.4, 10thin the NBA) and 3-point percentage (39.8, 6th).

But what makes this run so special is how their defense has stepped up its play with a string of strong performances.

Boston’s offensive rating (points scored per 100 possessions) in the last eight games is 108.8, which ranks fifth in the NBA.

And the Celtics’ defensive rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) in that span is 99.2 which is good for the fourth-best mark in that category.

Boston’s play at both ends of the floor of late puts them in some pretty elite company; they join only Golden State and Toronto as teams that rank among the top-5 in both offensive and defensive ratings over the course of the last eight games.

The Celtics are certainly making their mark at both ends of the floor, but more than anything else they are doing a better job of carrying out head coach Brad Stevens’ marching orders, which are to establish a strong defensive presence first and foremost.

“We can be a really talented team when we focus on the defensive end,” Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas told Comcast SportsNet sideline reporter Chris Mannix following Boston’s 116-91 win at Washington on Monday. “And let the offense take care of itself.”

Scal needs to put the brakes on. He stated that LeBron should be able to choose his head coach and say whatever he wants because "he's Lebron James".
Some people need to stay away from a Mic and camera. Its effecting his brain or what's left of it.

This is one of Bradley's "hot first quarter" games.

7 minutes, 10 points AND doing a good job on Mudiay.

Boy if he could be a lot more consistent he would definitely be a keeper

Jeez Turner. They don't get easier than that.

After a cold start except for Bradley we still ended up with 28.
