Celtics-Knicks preview: Jerebko helps in variety of ways

http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/celtics-knicks-preview-jerebko-helps-variety-ways

When the Boston Celtics put together a solid offseason of signings, Jonas Jerebko was a bit of an afterthought.

And as we’ve seen this Celtics bench come together in a way that has catapulted them to being near the top of the second-unit stack in the NBA, Jerebko’s play continues to be in many ways overshadowed by Boston’s super subs Kelly Olynyk, Marcus Smart and Evan Turner.

But make no mistake about it.

Strong play from Jerebko bodes well for the Boston Celtics and their chances at continued success, a trend they hope to continue tonight against the New York Knicks.

The Celtics (27-22) are coming off a disappointing 119-114 loss at Orlando which snapped their five-game winning streak. In the month of January, Boston [my note: he forgot to finish this thought here]

Even in the loss, the Celtics had an unprecedented performance in launching a franchise-record 46 shots from 3-point range.

And after reviewing the game film, head coach Brad Stevens saw opportunities where he felt his players could have taken even more 3s.

“To be honest, as I watched the threes in the first three quarters, I thought we probably could have made extra passes and shot five more,” Stevens told reporters on Monday. “And then at the end, we shot seven threes as we tried to come back in the last minute, skews the numbers a bit. For the most part we took good shots.”

Especially Jerebko who had eight points on 2-for-4 shooting against the Magic along with five rebounds. Just as significant, the Celtics were a +10 (tops on the team) when Jerebko was on the floor during his 18-plus minutes of court time.

One of the main reasons the 6-foot-10 forward has been a mainstay in Stevens’ rotation even as he shrunk it to just nine players, is because of his ability to help in a variety of ways.

Stevens has used Jerebko at the power forward position a lot lately, and that has been a good thing for both Boston and Jerebko.

Because of his perimeter shooting skills, it has created increased scoring opportunities for himself as well as his teammates.

And defensively, Jerebko’s athleticism has been on display often in switches on pick-and-roll plays in addition to when he has been matched up against small forwards (he uses his length, particularly when it comes to attacking the boards) and bigs (he uses his quickness to attack the rim or get to spots on the perimeter for open or lightly contested shots).

When Jerebko re-signed with Boston this summer, he made it clear that Stevens being the head coach was a big factor in his decision.

And while his role has been limited even at its peak, Jerebko said he has no regrets about returning to Boston after being traded to the Celtics last year.

“Like I’ve said before, I just want to stay ready when my opportunity comes,” Jerebko told CSNNE.com recently. “You know with coach Stevens that sooner or later, you’re going to get your chance. It’s just a matter of being ready for it and making the most of it. That’s what I try to do every chance I get to play.”

Indeed, Stevens’ even-handed approach with his players has been one of the reasons why the Celtics players have been able to cope with a roster that appears to have found its stride lately after struggling for stability most of this season

When it comes to choosing rotations, Stevens says “some of it’s about what you’re doing and not doing. Some of it is we have to choose nine or ten guys to play and go with it.”

Stevens wants his players to, “play to your strengths, be the best version of you that you can be. Here’s what we need you to be to be impactful for our teams. Everybody wants to play and it’s hard to be not playing. That’s the reality of it.”

As far as Jerebko is concerned, Stevens is pleased with what the veteran forward has provided thus far.

“He’s playing well,” Stevens said. “We need his versatility.”

Especially tonight against the New York Knicks and their perennial all-star Carmelo Anthony who will play both small and power forward. And with Jae Crowder potentially out or limited due to a shin injury, the role of Jerebko will be even more important for Boston’s chances at success.

“As the season goes on we’ll need it (Jerebko’s versatility) more,” Stevens said. “We haven’t played him hardly at all at the small forward position. But there will be times when we’ll need to do that.”

Carmelo with a flagrant 1 for elbowing Crowder in the face while making an offensive move. Bad call, but we'll take it.

Brad brings Kelly in quite early, but he gets three quick fouls though for now he is staying in the game.
