Guide to the trade deadline: Celtics

Bobby Marks of The Vertical,Yahoo Sports 4 hours ago

The Vertical Front-Office Insider Bobby Marks, a 20-year executive with the Nets, breaks down the Boston Celtics’ situation as the Feb. 18 trade deadline approaches.

HANG UP IF THEY ASK ABOUT …
2018 Brooklyn first-round pick
The reality is that it could take Brooklyn a few years to get back into playoff contention. Similar to the 2016 first-round pick the Celtics own from the Nets, a future unprotected first is a gold ticket to land an impact player, either in the draft or through a trade.

UP FOR DEBATE
2016 Brooklyn first-round pick
Celtics such as Marcus Smart have value. The Celtics should hang up unless they can land a top-10 player under contract for the next few years. Other than that, it would be best to hold onto this pick until after the draft lottery in May. It may be a below-average draft, but the pick will likely be in the top six, with a chance of being No. 1.

Future Memphis first-round pick
Boston will have the Grizzlies’ pick, likely starting in 2019. Obtained in the Jeff Green trade last year, the pick has light lottery protection that could turn into a 2021 unprotected first. With the core of the Grizzlies getting older, this pick becomes even more valuable as time goes on.

WORTH TAKING THE CALL
The entire team
If you are not Golden State or San Antonio, no player is untouchable. Boston has put together a strong and deep nucleus, but it is stuck in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Every player on the roster has some type of value around the league. With a combination of expiring contracts, non-guaranteed contracts, below-market salaries and young players, the Celtics have done a great job setting up flexibility for now and in the future.

NO-TRADE CLAUSE OR WITH A RESTRICTION
David Lee
Lee, who was acquired from Golden State, cannot be traded back to the Warriors during the 2015-16 season.

MOVE THAT PUSHES THE NEEDLE
Boston is one of few teams that can change the direction of the Eastern Conference.

Armed with an arsenal of draft assets and young players, can the Celtics push their chips to the middle to acquire an impact All-Star?

The biggest need for the Celtics is a go-to player down the stretch.

TREASURE CHEST OF PICKS
Burning a hole in Danny Ainge’s pocket
Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has plenty of draft picks at his disposal. The Celtics have their own first-round pick, projected to be in the early 20s.

Boston also has the Nets’ pick, projected to be in the top six, and the Mavericks’ first-round pick, projected to be in the early 20s.

The Celtics have two second-round picks, projected to be in the early 30s. These picks have equal value to late first-round picks. Boston has two more second-rounders in the mid 50s.

The Celtics also have Minnesota’s first-round pick, protected from Nos. 1-13. The pick will likely turn into a second-rounder from the Timberwolves because they will be in the lottery. There is no rollover to next season.

Boston has the right to swap first-round picks with Brooklyn in 2017 and has the Nets’ first-round pick in 2018.

Boston also has the Grizzlies’ first-pound pick, most likely in 2019. The year determination depends on when Memphis sends a first-round pick to Denver. If Memphis sends Denver a first-round pick in 2017, then Boston will receive a first-round pick in 2019, protected from Nos. 1-9. If the Grizzlies are in the top nine in 2019, then Boston will receive a pick protected from Nos. 1-6 in 2020. The pick becomes unprotected in 2021 if the Celtics do not receive a pick in either 2019 or 2020.

AVAILABLE TRADE EXCEPTIONS
None

POST-TRADE DEADLINE ROSTER MOVEMENT
Boston has 15 guaranteed contracts.

Unless the Celtics move a player at the deadline to create an open roster spot, expect there to be little movement for the remainder of the season.

SNEAK PEEK TOWARD JULY
Releasing the David Lee cap hold in July would allow the Celtics to have $15 million in cap space. That room factors into the three first-round picks Boston will have.

The Celtics can create more room by releasing Amir Johnson or Jonas Jerebko before July 3. By releasing both players, Boston could have $32 million in salary room. That cap space does factor into the free-agent holds of Evan Turner, Tyler Zeller and Jared Sullinger.

With draft picks, young players and cap space, the Celtics are in great position going into the off-season.

INSIDER INFO
If Boston trades the Brooklyn pick in any year, the Celtics would not be allowed to protect it. League rules stipulate that the pick must be sent as received originally.

Boston can only receive $300,000 in cash in any trade through June 30. The Celtics, in separate deals with Miami and Oklahoma City, received $3.15 million. The cash was used to absorb the player contracts of Zoran Dragic and Perry Jones.

The Celtics still have the full $3.4 million at their disposal to send out in any transaction.

I think that many of the Cs first round picks are currently being highly overrated.  Of course, if the Nets pick is still in Ainge's pocket in late June that thought changes if the Nets pick ends up being either one or two.

I just do not see a way that some of these number one picks (and, forget the many second round picks) are ever going to see a Cs uniform for almost any opening day in almost any of the years that they get drafted.  This would not be so true if the post Pierce/Garnett rebuild was not already so far along.

If none of the Cs current June 2016 eight draft picks are traded before of after the draft how many of these eight guys could even remotely expect to get to training camp late next September?  There is just no room for so many young guys all at once on this team.  Cripes, Rozier, Young, Mickey and Hunter have really not played enough to even scuff their first pair of shoes yet this season.  Are not these four guys considered ahead of the majority of the 8 possible 2016 draft picks?

These four guys plus eight rookies will amount to 80% of a 15  man roster if they are all going to in Cs uniforms in 2016.  Completely not going to happen.

The 76ers rebuild approach will get more rookies on the opening night roster, but this is not going to happen with what Ainge has done during the Cs rebuild model.

For this reason, I believe that Ainge needs to move some of these potential draft picks at this trading deadline to protect the overall value of the mass of picks that he has.  So what if he uses a bunch of them to upgrade the current team for a run at the Cavs in the East this season?  Over paying with draft picks now (as long as they do get a quality player who cannot disappear to free agency in July) actually may help the Cs in the long run.

one correction in that story should be noted.

the writer seems to assumes the Salary cap is not rising to the $89M range next season.

here is a link that shows the teams salary's now and in the future:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/BOS.html

with no "CAP HOLDS" meaning all four free agents (Turner and Lee are UFA and Zeller and Sully are RFA) we are at $51M in salarys for next season. More on that later.

even three first round picks (with their guaranteed salary's) will be in the $8M range at most for the next year. so the rookies put us up to $59M in salary's at most.

now adding the FA's

UFA's have a hold of 150% of their last contract
Tuner's hold would be $5.1M
Lee will be traded , released or renounced so their will be no HOLD on his salary agains our cap number

RFA 's qualifying offers are at 125% (I believe) of their rookie salary , unless their are considered a "starter" in which case the hold is at the 9th picks salary in the year drafted.

a QO is the same as a hold on the cap until the player signs a new deal or the QO for one year.

Zeller- not a starter so his QO will be about $3.3M

Sully - right now does not qualify as a starter I believe, but he may be close. His QO as a non-starter would be about $2.8M
his QO as a starter would be more like $4M I believe.

so adding Turner's hold and Sully and Zellers Qualifying offers to our cap number puts us at about $71M

with a reported $89M cap next year that gives Danny $18M in cap space right away.not the $15M that the story says by renouncing Lee.

now I get that the number are close enough, but the way the cap part was written seemed sloppy to me.

we also need to note that is all three FA's are kept with the three first rounders', Danny would have 17 players with guaranteed contracts next season, a situation NOT likely to happen.

cutting Amir and Jerebko does free up the $17M in non guaranteed salarys they have also, as the story says. That's would take Danny down to 15 guaranteed deals with about $35M in cap space....same problem.

my overall point I suppose is that Danny almost HAS to make some trades ,( either now or before the beginning of next season) to clear room for players alone.

Cap space IS there for a max player also, if Danny can find one.
