Celtics-Kings preview: Rondo playing great for Kings

http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/celtics-kings-preview-rondo-playing-great-kings

BOSTON – In a couple of weeks, Sacramento Kings guard Rajon Rondo will hit the big 3-0 which for many NBA players is usually the beginning of their downward spiral in the NBA.

But Rondo has always been different than others, so it really isn’t all that shocking that the former Celtic (and soon-to-be-30-year-old) is actually having one of his best seasons as a pro.

He will certainly look to build on that today when the Kings face off against his former team the Boston Celtics.

“I feel great. It seems like 30 is such an old age,” Rondo said following the Kings’ practice at Harvard’s campus on Saturday. “But I still feel good . . . I still feel fast. I don’t think I’m slowing up.”

Rondo attributes his better player this season in part on being one more year removed from the torn ACL injury he suffered while with the Celtics in 2013, in addition to having a full training camp prior to the start of this season.

“My body feels great, lifting, whatever it takes for my body,” Rondo said.

Rondo is averaging 11.9 points along with 6.2 rebounds and a league-leading 11.7 assists.

If Rondo can maintain his current assists average, that would equal his career high.

And when it comes to shooting which has never been a strength of Rondo’s game, he is also on pace to have a banner season.

From 3-point range, Rondo is hitting a career-best 35.6 percent (his previous career high was 31.4 percent last season which was split between his time in Boston and Dallas)

Rondo is putting up the kind of numbers that bode well for his impending unrestricted free agent status this summer.

Despite his strong play and the Kings continued struggles, Rondo says he is in no rush to get to free agency this summer.

“I don’t try to wish any time away,” he said. “I try to take it one step at a time.  This is a big month for me, I’m turning 30; focus on the month of February and try to get some wins before the All-Star Break.”

Improved communication defensively, especially when it comes to transition defense, is something Rondo believes has been at the root of Sacramento’s recent struggles.

For the season, the Kings are allowing 14.7 fast-break points which ranks 25th in the NBA.

And when it comes to opponents’ points off turnovers, the Kings rank among the NBA’s worst which has contributed to them allowing a league-high 108.5 points per game this season.

Fortunately for the Kings (21-29), this is an extremely top-heavy year for the Western Conference which has increased the likelihood that a team with a sub-.500 record will get into the postseason.

Sacramento is currently in 10th place in the Western Conference, trailing 8th-place Utah by four games.

“I’m trying to win as many games as possible,” Rondo said. “The Kings haven’t won over 30 games in like five or six years, so definitely want to reach that goal and hopefully get into this playoffs with as many wins as possible.”

Rondo remaining healthy will certainly be a factor in Sacramento’s success going forward, which he doesn’t believe will be an issue.

“This year,” Rondo said, “having a training camp under my belt, being able to get rust off my game and feel confident in my game and my explosiveness, getting that back . . . I feel great.”

Hi gyso,

Rosalie is going to the game. Let's hope she brings the Celtics luck. Although this should be a win for us, sometimes those are the games where we struggle. Rondo is sure to bring his A game so let's hope we do the same.

why are today's players allergic to the backboard? Jae would have hit that bunny if he used the back board.

At the risk of being the Master of the Obvious, you cannot beat us when we are shooting well from outside.

We run well, we generate a lot of fgas and we defend well. If we shoot well too, then you are doomed.

Hey Cow.

Considering the pieces we have, and only one All-Star who is explosive offensively but a liability defensively, I'd agree. We are an elite defense despite having no elite baseline defenders, not a particularly tall team. It's all schemes and discipline executing them.

How in the world can we score 46 and only lead by 9? Where's our D?

Right on bob, we hang our hat on pace and perimeter D, our all star should have been AB

That's just because you're prejudiced in favor of defense.
