Tanking??????? Empty Tanking???????

Post by wideclyde Fri Mar 17, 2017 12:00 pm

I am so glad that when the Cs had reason to "tank" that they did not do so.   They certainly were not the best team around,
but they played it out trying to win each game.

Talk about some teams cheating (and robbing) their fans!

How would you feel if you had plunked down about five grand for a season ticket and then for the last quarter of the
season your team "shuts down" a few of their best players to attempt to get a better draft pick??

To me this is just not right.  The league needs to do something about this idea and do something soon.  A very hefty
fine and taking away some draft picks would quickly fix this issue.

How about a $25 M fine and take away their highest draft pick in the first round, move all the other teams up in the first round, and give the offending
team the 32nd pick.

Bet no team tanks again.

I'm not a fan of tanking, to say the least, but how would you prove "tanking"? If you're going to nail franchises hard for doing it you better damn well be able to prove it.

At the very least, maybe they could have a rule that you cannot have a top 5 pick in consecutive years, or even allow only one top 5 every 3 years. That wouldn't entirely eliminate tanking, but it would make "the process" irrelevant.

Bob,

I gave some thought to your question/concern even before I made my post, and I agree that tanking may not be easy to prove in all instances.

However, the recent moves by the Lakers and the Suns (shutting down veteran players who are not injured) are beyond blatant examples of tanking to the utmost degree.  Very easy to prove, in my opinion.

The idea of not putting a competitive roster together from the beginning of the season like the 'ers did for several years would fall into the category that you mention (hard to prove).  But, even that approach should get the attention of the league which would then put such teams in the spotlight especially when a team is very much under the tax level for so long.

The thing is that shutting down vets on a losing team isn't actually always a bad long-term strategy. If you're doing it solely to get a better draft pick, then sure, it stinks for all the reasons you mentioned. But think of it this way.... If you have a veteran player who isn't part of your long-term plans blocking a young player who is from getting minutes, and you are already out of the playoff picture, why wouldn't you give the minutes to the young guy to learn on the job? At least that positions you better for next year if he improves either by his maturing as a player, or by showcasing him for a trade.

If there is going to be a solution for tanking, it has to be something like that wheel approach that was floated last year, where your draft position is set before the season starts. Not only does this help with tanking, but it also helps with roster construction as teams know years in advance when they will have high picks, and they can then trade them at 'real' value, as the other team will know with certainty where that pick will land. Trying to determine if an injury is real or faked, if a starter is being rested because they need it or to lose on purpose, etc. is too subjective. Under the current system, I like the idea of limiting high picks in consecutive years, which might help with the Philly-style perpetual rebuild.

Another idea I've seen thrown around, more in baseball circles where there aren't salary cap concerns and ownership has a bigger impact on the roster, is that if your team finishes last for more than X years in a row, force a change in ownership. It hurts the overall product of the league if there are teams that are perpetually lousy, so it makes sense to 'fire' the bad owners. This would also prevent perpetually rebuilding teams, though it might not help with the one-year tank job.

Do you think the Lakers fans would rather see Deng, Mozgov and Nick Young on the floor or Russell, Ennis, Ingram, Randle and Zubac?
So, the Lakers should be penalized for trading Lou Williams for a 1st round pick?
Teams at time need to rebuild.
Seattle/OKC did it and drafted Durant, Harden and Westbrook.
Philly could have a very dangerous team in the very near future.
Just as in life people have different paths to their goal. Teams also have different paths toward rebuilding their franchise. What's good for one team might not be good for another team for many reasons.

Should have the Celtics been penalized for not playing Gerald Wallace?

No teams should be penalized for rebuilding or tanking.
If the Lakers  keep their pick this year and not have a first round pick next year, you can guarantee they won't be tanking. But they still might be playing the young guys over Deng and Mozgov.

The whole idea of teams tanking in any professional sport has probably been blown way out of proportion.

I doubt is has actually happened except in a very few rare circumstances.

If anyone ever comes back with concrete proof of tanking, they'll have a rare find.
