Isaiah Thomas' 53 points lead Boston Celtics past Washington Wizards in Game 2 overtime thriller, 129-119

Washington Wizards guard John Wall (2) threads past Boston Celtics forward Jae Crowder (99) on a drive to the basket during the second quarter of a second-round NBA playoff series basketball game in Boston, Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

BY JAY KING

BOSTON -- It was John Wall's night until Isaiah Thomas snatched it away.

The Boston Celtics trailed by five points entering the fourth quarter, but that deficit didn't matter when Thomas swung his fist through it, one big play after another, until his team had taken down the Washington Wizards in overtime, 129-119, and grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second-round series.

Thomas had help. Oh, he had plenty of help: from Marcus Smart, who tracked down two massive offensive rebounds; from Terry Rozier, who rebounded like a big man and drilled a critical triple to tie the game late in regulation; from Avery Bradley, who stripped John Wall and drove in for a dunk to put the Celtics ahead by three with 2:22 left in overtime.

But this comeback started with Thomas, who scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, including two free throws with 14.4 seconds left that ultimately forced overtime. His domination carried into overtime, too, as he put in a tough floater, then drilled an impossible and-one while fouling out Markieff Morris. As Morris walked off the court, Thomas chirped and smiled and strutted around the arena he owned Tuesday night.

After starting Amir Johnson, the Celtics went to smaller and smaller lineups as the game progressed. With more skill around him, Thomas scored 11 points over the first four minutes of the period, then put in another bucket, somehow, while hanging over Otto Porter. After one 3-pointer, the Celtics guard sprinted straight to the opposite corner of the court, celebrating with fans, perhaps letting them know things would be OK.

Wall was brilliant with 40 points and 13 assists, and the Celtics didn't shoot nearly like they did in Game 1. It didn't matter.

After the Celtics trailed by six with barely more than two minutes left, Thomas drilled a catch-and-shoot triple then found Terry Rozier -- who rebounded like a monster and played so well -- for a corner 3-pointer on the next possession. That tied the game with 1:38 left and sent the TD Garden crowd into fits of joy.

Moments later, Thomas crossed over against Morris for a midrange jumper that put the Celtics ahead by one. After Otto Porter responded with a corner 3-pointer, Wall blocked Thomas on a layup attempt, but the Celtics maintained possession, giving Thomas a chance to draw a foul. He hit both free throws with 14.4 seconds left, setting up one last chance for the Wizards to win in regulation. Wall missed a pull-up jumper over Marcus Smart and Bradley Beal's (really good) look at a putback fell short.

Another bad first quarter

Though the Celtics didn't fall behind by 16 points this time, the first quarter of Game 2 was not any more promising. Brad Stevens went back to Amir Johnson in the starting lineup, but the Wizards ruined the more traditional unit. Isaiah Thomas picked up two quick fouls, partly because the Wizards guards focused on backing him down whenever possible. Markieff Morris showed no ill effects of a sprained ankle, and the Celtics helped shove the Wizards forward by turning the ball over NINE times. But regardless of what else happened, that was John Wall's quarter.

The Wizards star started things off by picking the Celtics apart from the post, then zoomed by them for a number of layups. Even after landing on his wrist and showing obvious pain, he blasted right through Boston's alleged defense again for another easy bucket. In the first quarter alone, he scored 19 points, added six assists, and accounted for more points (34) than the Celtics scored as a team (29). He was a force. They were overcommitted to turning the ball over. That combination did not help Boston.

He needed to take a rest, though, and the Celtics jumped back into the game once he did. Al Horford picked them up with back-to-back blocks and hyperactive small lineups started to pay dividends. In a series where both defenses have looked totally ineffective, even a brief stretch of stops can go a long way. The Celtics forced some turnovers, took care of the ball, and kept shooting at a totally unsustainable clip. Within minutes, the game turned bonkers. It's impossible to write about everything that happened late in the second quarter, so just know this: the action went back-and-forth like a tennis rally, and my head almost snapped trying to keep up. So many buckets. So much going on. Avery Bradley left the court briefly with a right hip pointer, but returned to start the second half. At that time, the Celtics trailed by five points.

The Washington starting five blasted Boston for most of the night. Morris was far better than expected after badly spraining his ankle in Game 1. None of it mattered. Thomas was not stoppable and the Celtics rallied around him.

Why even start Amir and play him four minutes?

The four guard offense seemed to be very effective, don't know if the stats back that up but from the eye test alone it worked.

Hi,
What a performance! I guess Morris did piss IT4 off.
Extremely important rebound by Smart in OT with a double whammy: keep possession and take Gortat off the floor.
Very important psychological W.
I hope, though, the next games they play as if there's no tomorrow from the start of the first quarter till the final buzzer.

How great was this win, and how much can we praise IT and Terry and Al and Marcus and even Jaylen? Not enough. Not enough. Jae too. Amir, meh.

What a fabulous win. Screamed my head off with my sons watching together.

I have been watchng the Celtics since the 60s and can`t remember as awe-inspiring a performance, especially given the circumstances, as this one by Isaiah Thomas.

the rookie was on the floor when it mattered most. one good play after another. So glad Rozier is getting some minutes and playing well. Brad needs to change things up again with a new starting lineup for DC. Wall is awesome. IT is awesomer!

There were other players on the court. The NBA sort of requires it.But this was a duel worthy of this or any other stage, and Isaiah Thomas and John Wall commanded it.It was a heavyweight fight between welterweights. Back and forth. Crossover moves to lose a defender followed by jump shots of silk — or drives into traffic without regard for life, limb or, in Thomas’ case, dental work.

The playoffs require physical toughness, because the refs tend to swallow their whistles, and mental toughness because of the pressure.  Yesterday would have been IT's sister's 23rd birthday.  And he went out and dropped 1 point shy of John Havlicek's Celtic playoff high of 54 points on Washington's heads.  Unreal.  20 points in the 4th and 9 more in OT (on 4-4 shooting).  I've had friends who are not Celtic fans tell me "you can't win a Championship with Isaiah Thomas as your starting guard".  Now I can't see doing it without him.  Death in the family?  Let me have a minute to myself.  Flying around the country for the funeral?  I'll take a nap before the game.  Get a tooth knocked out in Game 1?  6 hours of dental surgery on Monday and 4-5 hours more in the dental chair on game day, mouth so swollen I could hardly talk, and I'm good to go.  Her birthday?  It's too bad I'm playing you tonight, Wizards, because I'm taking it all out on you.  KG changed the culture here because he held everybody accountable and who could tell him "no" when he was an MVP and future 1st round lock for the HOF and he's making the same sacrifices too?  That's what IT is doing for us now.  Who won't give every last drop they have when they see him pushing past his personal issues and getting teeth knocked out and he doesn't care as long as we win?  Legends are made in the Playoffs, per Gerald Green, and IT is on the path to a place that dreams are made of.

A great battle by John Wall.  Aside from his 40 on 16-32 and 13 assists he also had 3 blocks including one on Marcus Smart posting him up in the low blocks.  I don't believe I've ever seen Smart getting blocked when he's down there and he got blocked by John Wall.

Our bench beat theirs again.  Scott Brooks is, effectively, going with a 7 man team.  He played Brandon Jennings 12 minutes and Bogdanovich 8.  Smith had 16 minutes and Oubre with 28.  16 minutes is minimum for a rotation player and 2 others got less.  Brad, on the other hand, matched Jenning's 12 with Brown's 12, Oubre's 28 with Rozier's 25 and still gave 21 minutes to Kelly (I don't count Smart since Amir only played 4 and Smart got his starter minutes).  Our bench's boxscore:  33 points on 11-21, 14 rebounds, 14 assists and 6 TOs, 3 steals and a block.  Their bench's boxscore:  22 points on 9-21, 11 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 TO, 0 steals and a block.

The reason why the bench issue is a big deal is because Wall and Beal played 47 minutes last night and 39 minutes on Sunday while Beal played 47 minutes last night and  40 on Sunday.  They are both averaging 39.8mpg for the playoffs-to-date including the Atlanta series.  That's a lot of minutes.  I saw some fatigue towards the end of last night's game in them.  Both Wall's and Beal's shots that could have won the game in regulation were decent shots, but short.  To me, that's fatigue, the legs lost an inch off the top of the jump and that's all it takes for a machine to malfunction.

Once again, just like in Game 1, they pnr'd us to death early.  Gortat's game was layups from pnrs.  Drove me crazy but what could you do, Wall was in a zone and he is ridiculously quick.  I'll bet if you looked at a shot clock breakdown you'd see them getting their shots with 10 seconds or less off the clock.  Not fast break basketball so much as hurry uptempo and that doesn't let us settle into our defensive schemes.

Marcus Smart looked awful in the 1st half with turnovers and stupid fouls.  I thought he was going to do another one of his "take me out, coach" things but in crunch time he reverted to being Marcus Smart.  A big rebound in OT and then the offensive rebound that fouled Gortat out.  His 2-6 from the frito line almost cost us, if he had even shot 50% from the line we would have won this in regulation, but all's well that ends well.  We still win and we burn Wall and Beal out a bit more.  We played more minutes too, of course, IT played 45 minutes, but I have MUCH more faith in our bench than in theirs.

Playoff Rozier is awesome to behold.  The kid has no fear, no nerves.  Love it.  The only Celtic players with zero TOs were Brown and Rozier. In fact, through 6 playoff games Terry Rozier has a grand total of zero TOs.  128 total playoff minutes this year and not one turnover.  None.  I'm not seeing him as a great floor general, although it has taken Smart 3 years before the game slowed down enough for him to be a good floor general, but he treasures the ball and defends and boards like a crazy man.

Coaching.  Ah yes, coaching.  Scott Brooks has his guys playing high as a kite, but is that the best way to do it?  Brad, on the other hand, has them playing even-keeled, focused and cold as ice-making machines, where double-digit deficits have no effect on their mentalities or game.  Which is better?  Boston 2, Washington 0 despite Washington holding healthy double-digit leads multiple times in both games.  We were down 6 with 2:43 left in regulation and IT hit a 3 and then Terry Rozier hit that ice-cold corner 2 to tie it at 110-110.  Morris was woofing at IT, Wall was woofing at everybody and we just said "nothing personal, but this is ours".

Winners have parades.  Losers have excuses.  In the Chicago game Hoiberg was complaining about IT's traveling, like nobody else travels in the NBA.  Now, it's 0-2 coach Scott Brooks complaining about the Celtics' physicality with Beal.

This is what Brook said prior to Game 1:

"Both teams are talented. Both teams play hard," Brooks said Sunday before Game 1. "It's not going to be '90s basketball. Those days are done. They're not coming back and thank goodness they're not because it's a great game to watch. It's free-flowing and it's pleasant on the eye. And it's not football."

Got some bad news for you, Scott.  This isn't OKC in the WC, it's the EC and this is '90s smash-mouth basketball at its finest and your team is losing that battle because you don't have them mentally prepared for it.  Welcome to The Battle for the Best in the Eastern Conference.  Don't forget your chinstrap.

They are going to play like meth-crazed wolverines in these next two must-win games for them (one of these days I'm actually going to see a meth-crazed wolverine and I will never use that again because it will be too terrifying) and I'm alright with that.  Burn Wall out.  Burn Beal out.  Burn Gortat out.  If we don't win at least keep it close so Scott Brooks can't sit them and we'll own them by Game 6 because the fumes will be getting thin.

Pretty exalted company.

Regardless how this season finishes, one thing that stands out for me is how our young ones are handling playoff basketball.   This can only help us down the road.  No doubt there will be some roster turnover but the core will be back I'm sure.

What a game.  So many big hoops. Never got flustered despite Washington shooting lights out for much of the game.

Good teams win and find a way. We kept it close most of the way and somehow the smallest guy in the league with the biggest heart put this team on his back yet again.

Bob said it all.

So Brooks go ahead cause all the switches you want to ISO on this 5-9 diminutive player.  Please continue to do so.  As that guy is pounding the ball traps are being set and it appears even if you do score and shoot well...........so can we.  And we have more amo than you.

Will we win in Washington?  Don't know but I do know this  every last player will go out there and literally kill themselves trying.

Brad is a better coach. Period. Brooks depended on Bogdanovich to rally his team at the end of the regular season. What does Brad do? Puts Jaylen on him which completely neutralized Bogdanovich. Brooks had to rely more on his starters then. By the end of the 4th Q and in overtime Beal and Wall were spent. Meager production from them in the final 7:30 of the game.

Isaiah has played EPIC. EPIC. Could not be more proud of him and the entire team.

Do we really need Fultz? Would not the Jacksons from Kansas or NC be better for us? Our current guard rotation is pretty amazing as is, and everyone was talking about how the Wiz had the best guards in the NBA. Not so much. Not so much.
