Isaiah Thomas is apparently playing through more than anyone first thought.

According to WEEI’s Glenn Ordway, Thomas is playing with a fractured jaw suffered in Game 1 when he got one of his front teeth knocked out by an inadvertent elbow from the Wizards’ Otto Porter.

He missed practice the next day to get dental work, and even spent several hours getting more work done on Tuesday, the day of Game 2, but then scored 53 points that night in the overtime win.

“He fractured his jaw. That’s what happened,” Ordway said Friday on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria. “The elbow hit his jaw and then what ended up happening is that tooth had no support system off the bone and the complete tooth came out. It was fractured deep inside and it popped out and he had two others that apparently were displaced.

“This is not a cosmetic thing. This is not, ‘Oh, big deal. He looks like a hockey player. He’s lost three teeth and can go out there and look funny.’ No, he not only has pain, but he has a situation in which three teeth have been totally displaced. He has to concentrate on what he’s doing. Apparently they took him in and it was a fairly serious situation where they had to put him under and everything else.”

The Celtics lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 set for Sunday in Washington.

It is not the idea of injury that could jeopardize his health to a point of affecting - let say his life, but the point that the guy has been flying coast to coast for his sisters funeral, playing 30+ minutes of high octane NBA playoff basketball, suffers a fractured jaw, undergoes 10 hrs of oral surgery on his jaw and teeth..................one may conclude that the guy is dog tired to begin with.

His match up with Wall is failing..........so why not use Rozier as a better match-up or Brown?  Switch the tables..........let Washington 2nd unit try to stop IT!

Brad has a stubborn streak in him at times that gets in the way of practical thinking.

We have seen this many times this year.

It may seem interesting to us fans, but does anyone think Brad and Co. would experiment with Isaiah off the bench with limited minutes?

The Celtics, if you check, have lost 9 of 12 Quarters......at this rate they have no answers as to stop Washington and are lucky to be up 2-1 in games.

That statement may be a half truth by Ainge. Broken jaw is different in complexity then a fractured jaw as described in the original headline. Most people think it is one in the same, it is not.

On Friday, the Celtics issued a statement clarifying the full extent of Thomas’ injury and denying that the two-time All-Star suffered a broken jaw:

As a result of a collision that occurred in Game 1 of the Boston Celtics’ Eastern Conference Semifinals series against the Washington Wizards, Isaiah Thomas sustained multiple front teeth injuries including a complete fractured tooth and two other subluxed/shifted teeth that required extensive oral surgery to stabilize. He did not suffer a fractured or broken jaw.

Thomas is currently wearing a four-piece temporary bridge that cracked after being re-injured. This necessitated a replacement at halftime during Game 3 of the series. The spanning bridge is necessary to protect and stabilize the injuries. Members of the Celtics medical staff anticipated the need to replace the temporary bridges, and are prepared at any time to do so. Thomas will receive a permanent bridge at a future date.

The difference is huge. One use of the wrong description of the real injury, Danny is claiming no injury. In essence Danny is being cute in not revealing the injury because of the use of word crafting or semantics broken vs. fracture.

In essence he lied.

However way it plays, Stevens should have rested IT and tried different combo's on Wall to top him. Hey, the guy is good......but he's no Bob Cousey or Allan Iverson.

Just keep in mind Washington has won 9 of 12 Quarters and Brad better find away to reverse that!

Not everything is a lie that comes out of management's mouth. I have seen the best players in the NBA suffer injuries that end their season, if this was the case with IT, believe me he would be sitting and that would be it. There is too much to be lost by forcing him to play or allowing him to get back on the floor with an injury that could be life altering.

They learned that with Kevin McHale. Come on now, if he is injured to a point of further hurting himself he will be sitting. period.

I saw IT's jaw bounce off the floor in Game 3 when he went down face-first.  I do not see any way a person with a broken or fractured or two-day-previous displaced jaw wouldn't be writhing around on the floor in agony after that.  IT just got up, played with his upper teeth a bit to see if they were moving or staying in, and kept playing.  That is behavior consistent with someone with a temporary dental bridge that just absorbed an impact.

Danny doesn't owe us the truth when it comes to player's injuries and such.  In fact, a disinformation campaign might even be in our best interests.  However, suspicion and cynicism, however justifiable and warranted, shouldn't trump evidence.  IT is getting popped in the head and mouth on most plays as players put their shoulders into him when they drive past him and bring their arms down on him to strip him of the ball or block his shot and he is not demonstrating the type of reactions to those contacts I would expect from someone with an injury as serious as a fracture/break.

And even if he did fracture/break his jaw, he went out the next game and dropped 53 on their heads.  If he can play through that much pain why wouldn't he be able to do it again?

I`d rather win games than quarters. Nobody should be surprised that this series is a war. IT is our best player. Adjustments will be made, but benching him won`t, and shouldn`t , be one of them.

I'm still waiting on the definition of difference between a broken and a fractured jaw. From what I can find they are the same.

What Is Jaw Dislocation or Fracture?

Dislocation of the jaw occurs when the lower jawbone (mandible) becomes displaced from one or both of the joints connecting it to the base of the skull (temporomandibular joints). Because these joints tend to be unstable, they are the ones most commonly dislocated, and recurrences are likely following an initial incident. A jaw fracture is a break often called a broken jaw in the mandible, usually due to a forceful blow. A severe jaw fracture warrants emergency care

Jaw Fractures

Jaw fractures are a very common result of facial trauma.  Fractures can involve the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible) or both.  The goals of treatment are to provide for the formation of a solid union between the bone fragments, reestablish as normal a bite as possible and return the jaw to as normal function (chewing, etc.) as possible.  Some fractures can be treated simply by wiring the jaws closed until the fractures have healed.  Other fractures must be surgically exposed through incisions in the mouth, on the face or both.  After exposure of the fracture(s), the bone fragments are manipulated into a satisfactory alignment and then secured with bone plates and screws. Uncomplicated jaw fractures generally heal in 4-6 weeks.

My cousin is a plastic surgeon specializing in facial reconstruction.  What IT had was an upper jaw (maxilla) fracture requiring the above described surgery and high lighted.

So when Danny said it was not broken, it was a half truth in that yes there was no breakage of bone in half in the lower jaw.  But it was a bone fracture in the upper jaw which is still serious.  

I know Danny was covering up a serious injury A La Bill Belichick when he tried to down play the injury.
