Marcus Smart Empty Marcus Smart

Post by cowens/oldschool Tue May 23, 2017 1:47 pm

Been away traveling, oldest sons graduation, then a great friends wedding, haven't been around as much as you all would like Lol.

KO has been playing tougher since that game 5 blowout win vs Wiz, which was best defense I ever saw him play. His defense might be Dirk-like right now which for a limited player like him is GREAT, right now we need his offense more consistent.

As most of you know I'm not a bigly stat guy as there are soo many stats, I still believe in my eye test.

Which brings me to an incredible stat, just read Marcus Smart is shooting 41% from 3 this playoffs.....WOW that is incredible as I don't think anyone of us saw this coming. If only Smart can keep this up, we may only have 2 more games left in the season, but I gotta think Smarts shooting numbers will be better next year. What a great overall game both ends he had in carrying us to thrilling game 3 win!!!

.413, and on a not-so-small sample size.  27 for 63.  Nice surprise.

steve playoffs as you know are great way to gauge where team is at and which players are keepers.

I'd say Smart is a keeper and were ahead of schedule as this run for me is all gravy since we got out of first round.

Cow,

Yeah, I was wondering where you dropped off to.  I was thinking I heard it wrong and it was your graduation and you went on a bender.   Very Happy

Yeah, Kelly's defense is "Dirk-like" in that he is a positional defender, as opposed to a "Bradley-like" defender who is man-to-man.  I think Kelly's defense might be a little better than Dirk's ever was but his offense, obviously, isn't comparable to Dirk's.  Believe it or not I think he's a more physical defender than Dirk.  He takes charges.  For the regular season the #1 Celtic in charges taken, not surprisingly, was Marcus Smart with .3 charges taken/game.  #2?  Kelly Olynyk with .19 charges taken/game.  That's pretty damn impressive considering Smart takes 58% more charges but also plays 48% more minutes.  So, Marcus takes more charges/minute than Kelly (or anybody else) but it's not as much more as the simple numbers suggest when you look at it as charges/minute  (.00986/minute for Marcus vs .00926/minute for Kelly). That's a ridiculously small difference.

Speaking of stats, charges taken is a hustle stat that doesn't show up in the regular box score.  You either have to look for it, like I just did, or your eyes need to give credit where credit is due (and if you don't because you don't like the player's defensive style then maybe you won't).  And, unlike blocking shots or making steals, taking a charge hurts.   When you block a shot or steal the ball you're all hyped up to do it again as soon as you can.  Put your body into harm's way and take a shoulder straight to the sternum and you are thinking carefully about doing it twice.  Taking charges is a "tough guy" stat and Marcus and Kelly lead the Celtics in it.

Offensively we need Kelly to be aggressive, especially going to the rim.  He is one of, if not the, slowest and most awkward looking players I have ever seen play professional basketball but somehow he keeps getting his shoulders past his defender.  I think a switch where he can get Richard Jefferson on his hip on the low blocks could produce points to the point where LeBron (and his pet coach, Tyronn Lue) has to make some defensive changes.  Certainly, if we can get JR Smith or even Shumpert on him down low that would be even better.  Let him see the ball go through the net a few times and we might see something good that game from him.  Are you listening, Brad?

Mahcus is shooting 41.3% from 3 in the playoffs.  He is also shooting 32.7% from 2 for a net playoff fg% of 37.3%, which is still pretty damn poor.  Having said that, we need him to hit 3s.  I cringe when he takes them, even Sunday I did, but if he's hitting them that opens up the floor for Kelly and Al and Amir.

Getting significant offensive production from Smart is gravy for a player that impacts winning in so many other ways.

With or without the impressive shooting during the playoffs I believe Marcus Smart is a long term keeper.

bob I don't remember Dave Cowens or Paul Silas taking any charges, that was a different era, they thought flopping was for pussies, real defenders just banged mano a mano. I'm glad KO takes the charge so we get possession, but that stat to me does not correlate to defensive ability. KG also rarely took charges and was a fierce defensive player. On Dirk, he was an adequate defender, limited but he needed a brute like Tyson Chandler next to him so his defense didn't hurt his team too bad. Obviously you needed him on the floor for his offense, as soon as they lost Tyson they were no longer going to Finals, similar to us with Perk.....KO for years has hurt this team defensively, but I do give him credit for playing harder.

Tonite is a big test for Marcus Smart, I'm not expecting another 27 point performance and unconscious from 3, but he's got to give us a great bounce back performance.....say 16 8 9 with some impact defensive plays.

Of course, consistency is always a problem for young players and young teams.

Smart is much better than he was three years ago, but he still has up and down nights. Witness the third game of the the finals and the fourth game.

With his many, many improvements and his persistent effort levels, he is a keeper even if we cannot beat Cleveland this time around. He will not likely make as much money as Thomas or Bradley, but he may actually be more important to earning title #18.

By the way, has anybody else noticed that Marcus Smart doesn't have a left hand? He will take a couple of dribbles with his left, but not until after he gets past his man (in other words, he doesn't do a killer crossover to his left hand) and he never shoots with his left.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Bob,

I am sure that you well remember Lenny Wilkins and that he never even scratched his ear with his right hand.

If Marcus Smart can contribute in ways like Wilkins did for his entire NBA, Hall Of Fame career, I would be glad to see every one of his NBA years in Celtics green.

Lousy shooter with a off shooting right arm that like most other players of the 1950-60's served no offensive purpose. If lucky, might sit on the far end of the bench in the modern nba generation.
