Rumor: Jonathan Isaac working out for only teams in top four of NBA draft

Dan Feldman,NBC Sports 3 hours ago

Our latest mock draft has Jonathan Isaac going No. 6 to the Magic, and that’s in the thick of the projected range for the Florida State forward.

But he’s operating as if he’ll go higher.

Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN:

Told Jonathan Isaac will only work out for the teams in the top four. Has worked out for both the Phoenix Suns and Boston Celtics, but it doesn’t sound like the Wolves will get any one-on-one time with Jonathan Isaac.

Draft workouts are always fluid. Maybe his camp will have a change of heart at some point. But I can tell you, as of Tuesday night, the 13th of June, Jonathan Isaac no interest in working out for the Wolves or any team outside of the top four.

Does Isaac have a promise from a team picking that high? The top of the draft:

1. Celtics

2. Lakers

3. 76ers

4. Suns

5. Kings (theoretically, Sacramento could have convinced Isaac it won’t pass on him, and so he’s working out for teams only above his floor)

I really like Isaac as a prospect, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a high-picking team became enamored. He’s long and athletic, possessing elite defensive potential and promising offensive tools.

It’s also possible Isaac is trying to project the image that he’s a top-four prospect, even without a promise. Dress the part, be the part. If this is a one-sided plan, it could backfire with Isaac falling past teams that didn’t work him out. But teams generally don’t require a personal workout to draft someone.

And as Wolfson said, Isaac could always work out for other teams later if he feels he could slip in the draft. But a refusal to work out now for teams picking lower than No. 4 offers at least a hint about his draft stock.

bob
MY NOTE:  Not too surprising.  He's the best, and one of the few bigs in this draft.  Might be a little too overconfident but...One possibility for why he isn't working out for Minny is because they are already well-stocked with quality bigs.

Danny went to see him workout.  Any chance Danny picks him with #1, or trades down for him?

I like his length and fluidity with the ball in his hands.

Physically he needs to add a lot more weight and muscle. His 3 point shooting is suspect.

I do not see DA trading down to get him. Why? Next year the draft is filled with multiple studs (PF's and center at the top of the draft.)

For the basketball historians. How many times has a team with the # 1 pick traded down?

Him and Tatum are both players I'd be interested in if we hadn't gotten #1.

dboss,

Aside from the obvious #1 for #3 and Robert Parish? No idea.

Although we have see # 1 picks traded for players it is rare that a team trades down form the # 1 pick

I think it has only happened twice.  Chris Weber was draft #1 and traded to Orlando for the right to Penny Hardaway plus other picks

And a little know player Chuck Share was the 1st ever pick in the NBA draft and I was surprised to find out that it was Boston who had that pick.  They traded the pick away.

So this years' pick is not the first ever 1st pick of the draft in Celtics history .

So traded down from # 1 is  very very rare.

I missing the point here. No one traded a #1 pick to move down to draft Parish

Boston traded the #1 pick (Joe Barry Carroll) to GSW for Robert Parish and the #3 pick (Kevin McHale)....a bigger heist than Danny's fleece of the Nets

I could actually see Ainge trading down for Isaac, but how could you tell where he will be picked.

He would have to be pretty darn sure who each team at the top is going to draft in order to take such a gamble on getting his man, Isaac (if Isaac is indeed "his" man in this draft. It would be easy to trade away the number one pick to, say Sacramento, hoping to get Isaac with the fifth pick and then have some team above the number five pick take Isaac.

I might take that gamble, however, if Sacramento was willing to trade numbers five, ten and Cauley-Stein for the number one pick. No question that we need a talented, mobile (and still developing) center.

I really think that if Ainge trades away number one that he will be getting a "star" type piece in return and not just more draft picks for either this year or for future years. The Cs are already a pretty young team for next year (even without James Young on the roster for 2017-18).

Well, it would have to be a wink wink deal. Obviously grab Fultz at #1, then wait. If Isaac is there at 5.....Fultz, Ball, Jackson, Fox, Tatum...he should be there.....then make the trade. SAC gets Fultz and.....(Crowder?), while we would get 5, 10, Stein and Isaac.

I think I might do that, with the hope that Monk or Smith is there at 10.

But, I'd also be very happy with Fultz!

Only way I'd trade the pick, like you say, is to get multiple players or picks and players back.

Do we really want "multiple players"? What would we do with them all? And aren't we plenty young now, how many on our roster are 25 or less? Add Isaac and WCS and there's 2 more.

red/russ,

Not sure why you would want to include Crowder unless you are thinking that Brown and Isaac could hold down the small forward position next year.  I am not sure that we get better next year if we are planning to give that rotation spot to the two very young guys although I do believe that both could be better statistically than Crowder once they gain a couple of years of experience.

I would much prefer to give the Kings Zeller and Mickey type guys and maybe a future first that is not the Nets 2018 pick along with the first round pick (Fultz?) for their two first round picks this year and WCS.

Crowder has established himself as a very important part of our team for at least the duration of his contract, in my opinion.  Sometimes, a couple of points here and an assist there can be sacrificed for what character a guy like Crowder brings to a team.

Doesn't have to be Crowder. Just thinking they will want A player.....AB, Crowder, Zeller, Rozier.....and a pick for all that. Without WCS, just give me the picks

red/russ,

Giving them Zeller and Jackson or Mickey is OK, but not giving them Bradley and the number one pick.

Them getting the number one pick in the entire draft (and, in a draft where the talent runs pretty deep) is something that they have to give up something pretty special for, in my opinion. five and ten in any draft in any sport rarely (if ever) equals one.

WCS sucks or pretty close to it.

9th in minutes per game averages 8.1 points and 4.5 boards and 0.59 blocks. 1.1 assists and his shooting percentage is 53%. His 3 pt percentage is zero and he is 64% from the line. I do not even like KO but I would keep him over WCS.

That's why I said, without WCS, give me just the picks.......maybe!

I still hope we take Fultz, for the record
