Ainge irked that J. Jackson canceled workout Empty Ainge irked that J. Jackson canceled workout

Chris Forsberg
ESPN Staff Writer

BOSTON -- Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said Kansas forward Josh Jackson canceled a workout recently after Boston brass traveled cross-country to see him and said the team never talked with Jackson in advance of Thursday's draft.

The Celtics selected Duke's Jayson Tatum with the No. 3 pick, and Jackson went one spot later to the Phoenix Suns. Ainge vented a bit after Thursday's draft when asked if there was any truth to a rumored clandestine late-night workout with Jackson this week in Boston.

Tatum goes to Celts after assist from Coach K
The Celtics took Duke's Jayson Tatum with the third overall pick in Thursday's NBA draft.
"Never talked with Josh. No one in our organization did," said Ainge. "They cancelled a workout on us when we flew out to Sacramento, and they just decided to cancel it as we flew -- just [coach] Brad [Stevens] and I and [assistant general manager] Mike Zarren flew cross-country.

"So there was something that he didn't want to play for the Celtics. In spite of that, we've watched Josh for two years and we're fans. He's a terrific kid and a good player. So we tried not to overreact to those kinds of things and make a big deal of it.

"Agents and players have all sorts of motivations to get to certain places, as we've seen in the past. Remember last year, Kris Dunn didn't want to come here; we didn't hold it against him. We felt like we were just taking the player that we wanted [in Jaylen Brown last year]. And I think the same thing this time. I don't think we were trying to penalize Josh too much but we didn't get to see him or talk to him face-to-face."

Pressed on if the cancellation left Boston considering passing entirely on Jackson, Ainge said he tried to remain calm about the situation.

"No. No. no. Well, there were thoughts, yeah, I was mad," Ainge said. "We flew cross-country. Are you kidding me? I had to get up at 4 o'clock and fly back home."

Zarren then chimed in about how the Celtics' contingent simply went to bed after arriving in Sacramento then got up early for the flight home.

Ainge, who played for the Sacramento Kings during his playing days, quipped, "There's nothing to do in Sacramento." After some laughs from the media, Ainge added, "That could get me in trouble there."

After his selection by the Suns, Jackson said he regretted "maybe a little bit" the decision to not work out for the Celtics, quickly adding he was "happy, glad to be a Phoenix Sun."

Ainge said the Celtics would have picked Tatum with the first pick if they had stayed in that spot before moving down to No. 3 in a trade earlier this week with the Philadelphia 76ers. Ainge gushed about both Tatum's scoring potential and his versatility on the defensive end.

"We liked his size and length and rebounding and shooting. [His] Intelligence [and] character," Ainge said. "There's a lot to like about Jayson. He's going to be a terrific player."

Asked about trade rumors, including whispers that the Celtics were pursuing New York Knicks big man Kristaps Porzingis, Ainge said, "I don't comment on trade rumors. I will say this: It was a little blown out of proportion, but I'll just leave it at that. A lot more talk by [the media]."

Ainge also admitted that some trade talks could be rekindled in July and said, "We anticipate being very active and continuing to try to improve and improve our roster."

BJ Armstrong did himself and his clients an extreme disservice in his unprofessional handling of this situation.

Kyle,

Absolutely.

I watched that presser with Danny.  Yeah, he was NOT happy.  He tried to get past it a couple of times in a low key type of way (the joke about how there's nothing to do in Sacto at night) but you could tell he did NOT appreciate getting on a plane at the last minute to Sacto with Brad Stevens and Mike Zarren, land in Sacto, get to the hotel and then find out the workout was cancelled.

With just a few days to go before the draft every free moment is precious, especially this year where deals were being made left and right and they change how we look at who is or is not available.  Call it 11-12 hours in the air plus all the unproductive time to and from airports is a lot of time wasted by 3 critical people and BJ Armstrong is responsible. I was an executive, once upon a fairy tale, and I can tell you nothing pisses one off more than feeling like he/she has been jerked around or has had their time wasted. Deals come together, deals fall apart, that's all part of it and you accept that things don't always work out but having someone who is supposed to be responsible treating you like you and your team's time is valueless will send an executive into a major steam. I know that if BJ did that to me I would have to have more than a couple of "time outs" so I could collect myself and force myself to do business with them again "for the greater good", but always now with a shorter rope. Much shorter. Short enough so that if I kicked the chair out from under him his feet couldn't reach the floor.

And it doesn't help BJ Armstrong that Danny talks to every GM in the league at least once/month, probably more than that this coming month. I would bet real money the topic of Danny's selection of Tatum will come up and that will lead to why Tatum and not Jackson and that's when BJ will feel the pain.

More than just Ainge, Zarren will be a GM elsewhere in a year or two. They're very close to Morey and Doc. There'll be a real ripple effect against him. If he can't be relied on, GMs won't use his clients to get creative deals done. Ainge is the GM who gave Amir Johnson 24m, Jerebko 10m, and Zeller 8M. He revived the career of Evan Turner. BJ isn't going to see that kind of deal again.

BJ Armstrong is looking like the Draymond Green of agents. And Draymond is his client. Perfect fit.

And, on. Top of it all, that posting that Jackson put on facebook after being drafted by Phoenix that EVERYONE who passed on him will regret it. Looks like all that hair on his head is putting too much pressure on him. What a jerk

He's the best prospect in this draft and he will indeed punish the Celtics, Lakers, and 76ers. Lucky for us, it will only be two times a year. The Lakers are going to face his wrath 4 times a season.

Suns GM admits conspiring with BJ Armstrong to keep Jackson away from working out with Celtics so that he would fall to #4. Then says, "We play by the rules, I guess"

Wow, that cannot be legal. Conspiring with an agent and possibly a undrafted player? As they say, stay tuned.

I bet the plan was to wait until Ainge and Stevens were in the air, and THEN cancel the workout and refuse to meet with them. Jackson sounds like he didn't even know what was going on, and a tad regretful that he's not a Celtic.

If Jackson is the best prospect in the draft, why didn't the Sixers or Lakers pick Jackson #1?

Because the Colangelos are the type to trade with Danny Ainge, like Billy King.

I agree he has no reason to be pissed at us. He's just the type of superior competitor to find motivation to be pissed at anybody and everybody, for any fake or real reason.

What I mean is why didn't the Sixers pick Jackson over Fultz and why the Lakers chose Ball instead of Jackson.

When picking from 1 to 3, teams draft the best player available.

Lakers drafted Ball because he's the LA kid who will make millions for the franchise and their cable TV partner Time Warner.

Philly slept on the importance of competitiveness and athleticism, and Jackson's point guard and shooting guard versatility.

Guys like Jackson consistently get drafted too low. Giannis, PG13, Kawhi, Jimmy Butler, etc. Size + Athleticism + coordination + monster work ethic goes a really long way, but require vision to evaluate.

Time will tell.

There's also a reason why competitiveness and athleticism are not the only traits you should look at in a basketball player.

Remember Marcus Banks?

Marcus Banks was not lacking in the competitiveness and athleticism department.

there's a ton of players like that, that should have made it, but never got near there, Ricky Davis, Cory Magette, Michael Kidd Gilhurst....but were great athletes. Justice Winslow better show something next year, or he'll be another one.

Repetition becomes a mantra, but it is only correct for the one who repeats it. Jackson will become awfully tired carrying all that anger around---at least 3 GMs thought there were better players available than him . Maybe they are wrong. The Lakers probably realize that nothing brings a franchise more money than winning. Jackson seems butt hurt. Probably time for him and his relentless cheerleaders to get over it. If he turns out to be the best player drafted, kudos. Once everybody knows your opinion, expressing it over and over again becomes pointless.
