The Current NBA Structure & Player Free Agency

What we are witnessing with many of the top echelon of stars opting to resign with their present teams and garner all the monetary value associated with an extra year, is the system put in place by owners to keep their stars on the farm is working!  Especially home grown stars that came up through the draft.

We should not be surprised by how this free agency season is panning out.

Yes, there will be some stars who leave the farm and sign elsewhere, but they will be few and far between.  Those who move on are either nearing the end of their NBA career and wanting to win a title and joining a potential finals team, those young but stuck on a poor team with no near term potential to make the playoffs let alone the finals, or those who just do not like the city/region they are currently playing in and want to be near or in cities/regions that they prefer.

Given the above, the Celtics just have to grow their farm breed stars using the draft and use the system currently to keep their stars, by using monetary incentive structure currently in place.  It's a long term approach but one taken only by smart teams.  If we get LUCKY and pick off a free agent without using any of our picks............that is a winning formula.  Remember the Celtics have a winning team and formula....let us keep that intact!

of trading. The talk radio is full of analysis from
people who have no idea what they are talking about
this includes these idiot reporters.

Draper the other night threw Danny right under the bus when the news of George's trade came through. I could have jumped thru the screen to try and shut
him up. Why do they have reporters on here who have
no idea what they are talking about or show their aliegience to former teams. Draper....Philadelphia....Blakely....Detroit...

I agree.  The new CBA is designed to give teams an edge in re-signing their superstars and we're starting to see evidence that design is taking hold.

For that reason, high draft picks are extremely valuable, since you are then positioned to keep them for 10 years, virtually their entire effective career.  It's almost like free agency is being phased out, except using golden handcuffs to disincent players from leaving rather than just mandating they can't.

The key, the critical thing, then is drafting well.  If you have a high draft pick (e.g. 1-5, say) and you don't produce an all-star out of that then you have seriously hurt yourself since trading for an all-star who isn't long in the tooth is tough. The league has recently been shocked by the giveaways of Butler and George, but how many other bonafide stars have been traded? Cousins? A player with a seriously damaged reputation.

#3 Jaylen Brown and #3 Jayson Tatum better work out to become all-stars (especially Tatum, after trading down to get him) or Danny has squandered all his efforts to corner the market in draft picks.  Draft picks don't win championships, players do.

The clock is ticking on Danny's drafting talents.  He might be one of the greatest traders in the history of the NBA but, in a league that is being oriented towards retaining your own superstars, being a talented drafter might be even more valuable.

If high draft picks and numerous draft picks are what you will need to build a top level team there is no
team better equipped to do so than the Celtics.

Seven potential first round picks in the next three years (two of them could be lottery picks next season) and some second rounders seem to put our team ahead of most of the other teams in the league.

And, on top of that we had the best record in the east last year to build upon. Most teams that ever even come close to having so many picks are usually well entrenched in losing when they are able to add top talent through the draft.

Ainge's approach may not have been fast enough for some, but look what he has accomplished since trading Garnett and Pierce without having to tank for even one season. And, look at how Stevens and his staff have developed so many of his young players.

Only more good things ahead.

I know we are the best positioned team in the NBA. Let us build through the draft & free agency if we get lucky, let the rest of the league lick our boot staps.
