Report: Celtics Looking To Address Rim Protection In Free Agency
July 6, 2017 9:40 AM
BOSTON (CBS) — Rebounding and rim protection are among the Celtics’ biggest needs ahead of the 2017-18 season. It appears that the team will look to address that in free agency.
Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype tweeted on Wednesday that the Celtics are “showing interest in several free-agent rim protectors.” They’re also looking at potential moves to clear cap space, which has led to those sign-and-trade rumors involving Jae Crowder and Gordon Hayward.
The unrestricted free agency market is thin at center, especially among players who could make an impact for the Celtics around the rim on the defensive end. Dewayne Dedmon, a 27-year-old 7-footer who averaged 6.5 rebounds in just 17.5 minutes per game for the Spurs last season, could be an option. Other available UFAs who could contribute in the rebounding and rim protection department are Roy Hibbert, JaVale McGee, Marreese Speights, and Jordan Hill.
If the Celtics want to take a stab at sending an offer sheet to a restricted free agent, they could look at the Mavericks’ Nerlens Noel, the Suns’ Alex Len, or the Nuggets’ Mason Plumlee.
The Celtics were tied for 26th in the NBA in defensive rebounds per game last season. They also allowed the fifth-most offensive rebounds in the league and finished 27th in rebound differential per game with minus-2.5.

All things equal, Noel but that isn't happening.
Speights is probably the most interesting attainable one
Would Pau consider it?

I refuse to vote. The notion that the dollars are equal is unrealistic. Anything other than a low cost one year rental cannot be obtained unless we make a trade. And now that genius Ainge has already fumbled his way through free agency we have less assets to make that happen.
I am sure that if we wanted Noel the Mavs would love to get Crowder back.
This whole thing stinks worse than a dead fish rotting in the sun.

amen dboss,...ummm amen on the we don't have any cap space, not on the rotting fish stuff....LOL.
yet another article touting the ability to offer RFA's a valid deal.
we have ZERO cap space folks (someone please tell the writer of this piece) BTW, to these people really get paid anything?
now we DO have that $8.4M exception we can use to get one of the UFA's above on that list.
the only ones worth a damn there are Dedmon and Speights.
Dedmon is supposedly working the room even now, so if Danny wants to get into the game he better get on the phone soon.
and who in the hell put J. Hill on that list?
he played like 47 minutes for Minny last year...If he gets a minimum deal, he'll be laughing to the bank

Re: Report: Celtics Looking To Address Rim Protection In Free Agency
I'd still try to work a deal with Philly for Covington and Holmes if possible. Both are solid young bench players who fit needs for us. Both on final years of their deals an combined just over $3M.
Trouble is Crowder would make the most sense for them in any trade.Since it looks like he is headed to Utah, that aint' happening
if only one I'd want Holmes.
be willing to give one of our non lottery 1st for him myself right now.

Saw a fictitious trade where we would get Clint Capela from the Rockets, with Carmelo going to HOU and Gordon and Bradley going to the Knicks.....

Seeing that list just reinforces my thinking that we're going to have to find bigs to trade for. Nothing good on the FA front.
That is one big list of bad alternatives, save, perhaps, for Noel, who doesn't appear to be going anywhere.

Re: Report: Celtics Looking To Address Rim Protection In Free Agency
Hard to believe that with all the cap experts we have on this board that Danny could get himself into the predicament of not being able to clear cap space and sign Hawyard. Hate the idea of a sign and trade for him esp if it contains a prime asset like Jae. He needs to take a little less money so Jae can be moved properly. We need creative trades that move contracts and assets and brings in rebounding and rim protection. Brad preaches ball handlers (check), wings (check) and bigs. Time to big up Danny, and pull off the unimaginable. We need at least two multi team trades. We need to break the two logjams. We need to be made ready for next year's draft and FA/Trade period. There is a lot to do if this team is going to make the Finals.

I doubt the Celts will be just giving Crowder to Utah. Ainge isn`t changing a free agent signing into a 1 for 1 trade unless he has lost his damn mind.kdp59 wrote:I'd still try to work a deal with Philly for Covington and Holmes if possible. Better be. I liked the signing, but c`mon--- it`s not like we`re getting Curry , Lebron , or Westbrook. If Crowder gets us a rebounder , I`m happy. Hate to see any of the core guys go, but the NBA has become so volatile. I like to see what`s done with the small pieces , too---House. Posey, P.J. etc.

Seeing Roy Hibbert and Jordan Hill's names on that list as possible rim protectors makes me want to vomit.
