it gets late early around here : Yogi Berra-----centers have to be athletes too. Maybe his nerves have gotten the best of him? Not encouraged , so far.

He just scored on a nice spin move with the left hand, has blocked a few shots, he will do the dirty work, he can still help us.

Zizic's summer league has not done much to clarify the uncertainty surrounding the Celtics frontcourt beyond Al Horford.

The anticipated debut of Nikola Jokic was also on display in this game. Jokic finished with 9 points on 4-9 shooting (1-3 from deep), to go along with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. All in all, it was a nice first game for the rookie. Jokic's passing and poise on the floor were key, but he did tend to get bullied a little bit on the glass and will need to add strength to his game. Jokic was able to haul in two offensive rebounds, and should have had a third, but he attempted to tip a board to a teammate in the first half, that resulted in the Hawks gaining possession. But when Denver did turn the ball over, they did a great job getting back on defense, thanks to Nori stressing that on the sidelines. And transition defense is something that Malone has stressed, too.

You can't tell much from summer league...
Except that Zizic doesn't have an NBA level game. Not at all.
The search for bigs continues.

Semi Ojeleye has shown me nothing. No handle, no shot, pretty much nothing, but I heard he does a fast cone drill. Meanwhile the pick right after him Dwayne Bacon has been tearing it up in SL.

Semi reminds me of Crowder. and he is a second round pick( also like Crowder). So we need to expect him to take some time, IMO.

Zizic is about what I expected at this point. Not sure why anyone thought he was going to come to the NBA and be a starter right away.

If he is the hard worker everyone says, he will improve his game quickly though.

one thing we know right now is that Danny needs to find one more big who can backup Hordford from day one.

the new 3 position Celtics (was that story posted here?) means we may only have two rotational bigs this year.

Zizic is not looking real good to begin with yet he still produces. Given time and 10-15 min to start, he will come around and be that rotation player that is needed.

The big unknown is Theis from Germany. He played PF/C in Germany so he will be a big here. Yabusele should be another back up big but it really looks like he is out now.

Now that we have Marcus Morris, that should help.

I'm not a fan so far of the Hawyard signing. It's a botched deal from the get go. As soon as the announcement debacle subsided it became obvious that the C's couldn't afford to pay him a max salary. The other negative is that we can't sign the core people we need and the draft picks that can be developed. So going forward we will start to have major limitations.

Danny is not a perfect GM. He makes a lot of mistakes that would get others fired. He has never gotten over that feeling of being a 250 hitter and winning the game with a HR in the bottom of the 9th.  Fire Danny signs were every where until he hit the KG homer. He has done an excellent job of redeeming the C's from luxury tax hell. He has positioned the C's with multiple assets to assure continued success in the future. He has played that part of the game very well. But there is a major disconnect in how he values players. Not just in overvaluing his roster, as has been discussed many times, but in how he values draft talent. He often selects a player who doesn't work out when the next player or two emerge as stars. I still trust Danny, and wouldn't want someone else I could name, but sometimes he just leaves me scratching my head and wondering what he is thinking. The final result of all this will probably be raising #18 when we will forget all about things like this. But in the moment...

This is probably one of the more fair and objective posts I have read, dealing with a host of topics including the Hayward signing and D Ainge's overall performance.

One doesn't have to see every point in exactly the same way to agree that Mulcogi gave this a very balanced and well thought out shot.

Post by wideclyde Fri Jul 07, 2017 6:13 pm

I was thinking of posting some of my thoughts relating to what I have seen in his first three summer league games, but most of what I was going to say has already been said in only a few posts.

Now my best thoughts lie with him working hard with Stevens and his staff so that perhaps he can be ready to fill a rotational spot by mid season or by next season. He should not be expected to be able to be a rotational player yet since he is still a raw rookie and even very new to our country.

Time is on Zizic's side, but time may not be on Ainge's side as he still needs some NBA experience in the two front court spots on the Cs roster. Hoping that Zizic can effectively back up Horford at this time appears to be quite a stretch.

Clyde with the best line here for me...."time is on Zizic's side"

He is 19 and to me, looks like he has a lot of skills that are 90% developed. He can spend some time in Portland this year, with the rest of his days alternating between the weight room and the end of the bench. By the time the Celtics are ready to really contend - who knows.

112288.
I agree completely with you and I am going to add that he played 65 games in 4 different leagues,he is suppose to be resting after a long and tough season and he is in a new country playing a system he doesn't know and with players that only wants to look good. His last game stats were good,9 points 7 rebounds and 3 blocks.Have you seen Lonzo Ball playing today ?Last time I looked to his stats he was 2 for 11 for just 4 points.

I really like how he keeps his hands up but someone better peel away the two sided fly paper from the bottom of his sneakers.

As a fan i think we have to give him an opportunity.  As of today however I would say that he sucks.  He is a very poor fit in the pace and space offense.  This is the reason why watching highlight films is deceiving.

He obviously lacks the lateral quickness and vertical jumping ability to give us rim protection.  He runs the P N R but I have seen virtually no pick and pop options.

Danny likes him so we will see if he can become part of the rotation or just end up warming a spot on the bench. The glass appears to me more than half empty on this one.

He's a banger.  Every team needs a banger and, considering the direction the league is going in, maybe only one banger.  GSW has/had Zaza, Cavs have Tristan Thompson.  Are they key players?  No, maybe especially not Zaza, they are role players who start, like the way Perk was a role player who started for us because he was surrounded by the talent to reduce his need to "do it all" but was sorely inadequate before KG and Ray came aboard.  If we can surround Zizic with talent he should grow into his role well.

Too soon to compare him to guys like Thompson when it comes to banging. He is not in the same class by any stretch.

Zizic may bang some but he cannot jump. I can already envision me watching games next year and screaming at the TV, "Jump goddamit jump".

I think I like Zeller better but Brad with all of his smarts could not figure out a way to use him. Zizic looks like a sure bet G-league player to me. A two-way contract player.

Larry Bird, Charles Oakley, Paul Silas, Perk all pretty much couldn't jump, but they all figured out a niche how to be serviceable enough to help us/their teams. Zizic has an old school game, he runs the floor, has decent hands, is committed to the dirty work, something Zeller and KO didn't have the attributes for. I think he can be our banger role player going forward.

Cow a few summer games makes not a career so maybe Zizic will surprise but I doubt it.

The Celtics do not want or need an old school game. They want a new school game. Zizic cannot space the floor on offense. That means he cannot play in the pace and space and if he cannot play in the pace and space he cannot play at all.

At Least Zeller had the skills to play pick and pop and knock down those elbow jumpers. Therefore Zeller is actually a better player than Zizic.

Read the scouting reports on Zizic. He cannot shoot from the outside.

Zizic vs. Zeller. Battle of the zzzzs.Zeller couldn`t hold position or rebound. Zizic can`t change position. Looks like he`s slogging through mud. I`m rooting for the guy, but the only thing he has shown me is that he can run the floor.  Lateral movement is a different story. Most other rookies are facing the same  challenges  as he is, including finding housing etc. Are we sure he doesn`t know English? Most eastern Europeans I know leearned it early and are fairly fluent.

I agree he has limitations, all I'm saying is he can fill a need that can help us that neither Zeller or KO could do. Tristian Thompson, ZaZa, McGee all cannot shoot from outside
