Down 18-2 to start.  NOT pretty, but we rallied nicely and that goes to character.

Tatum is going to be gooooood.

Jaylen was sloppy.

We have to find a spot for Nader.  15 points and 7 boards.  A very sound player, but how many wings is too many?

Zizic played 10 minutes, he started, when we went down 18-2. Got beat on transition D a couple of times.

Semi 5-9 from 3.  Not that effective inside but he can bomb away.  Decent defense too.  Took a key charge and challenged a Ball corner 3 nicely.

For the Lakers, Kuzma looks like a helluva shooter.

Ball with 11 boards and 11 assists but not good shooting.  I think his shot mechanics will hurt him in the pros.  Players are faster, taller and longer.  They will contest that weird shot of his.  A better outing than last game.

Jaylen looked like a man among boys the first game, average since.

Tatum was sluggish first game...looks like the man since. He's smooth.

he'll back up Morris at our "PF" slot this year. He has much better length than I thought, will need to add some weight before he can a starter, IMO. But there is no problems with him and Jaylen and Hayward all playing together in the future.

Bob, It was a great game by Tatum, but Nader really deserves a spot on this team too. Shimi Shimi Coco Pop sure has a sweet outside shot. Danny's gonna love that. Too bad Zizic was so discomobuated. I hope he can blame it on a late night at the slots.

Any jumper Zizic took looked really ugly, either ugly clank or airball, was pleasantly surprised by an up and under move he did!!!

Jaylen had opportunities to attack and settled for jumpers too many times and his outside touch has been mostly absent since game 1, they are asking him to initiate the offense and I would rather see him attacking or posting up, which he can do and hasn't done last few games. Guess its as good as anytime to get out of your comfort zone and work on things you have not tried or been asked to do. Had some nice defense and got beat a few times back door.

Agree with everything you said, but I actually thought Zizic was better than previously. Celtics looked better when Jackson brought the ball up. He has recovered somewhat from his stupendously awful 1st game in Utah.

LAS VEGAS – The Celtics-Lakers rivalry has lacked zest over the past few seasons, with Los Angeles slipping to one of the bottom teams the league. Saturday night in Las Vegas, however, the zest was back.

Boston and Los Angeles went back and forth in front of an electric atmosphere on national television, and in the end, it was the Celtics who eventually pulled out an impressive 86-81 win

The Thomas & Mack Center, which is hosting the NBA Summer League, was rocking well before tip-off as fans from both sides of the rivalry filed into the building to watch their top young stars collide. Lakers fans showed up in droves and made the matchup feel as if it was a true road game for Boston.

The Lakers faithful got exactly what they had hoped for out of the gates, as their team, led by strong play from No. 2 overall pick Lonzo Ball, stormed out of the gates to a 15-2 lead. Ball played the first eight minutes of the game and racked up three points, two assists, two rebounds and a steal before checking out. He finished the contest with a triple-double consisting of 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

As Ball and the Lakers excelled early on, the pro-Lakers crowd grew louder and louder. Boston had to battle against the atmosphere after being rattled in the early minutes.

“It felt like I was in college and we were playing at North Carolina, and they got on us,” Tatum said of the crowd.

Jaylen Brown added, “There were a lot of Lakers fans out here. The Lakers came out and they played hard – super hard.”

That knocked Boston off balance after the opening tip, but the C’s began to settle down once Demetrius Jackson began running the offense. He checked in at the 7:15 mark with Boston trailing 10-0. By the end of the first period, the C’s had clawed back to within 20-14.

“Demetrius was great because he gives us some stability,” acting head coach Walter McCarty said after the game. “He gets everybody in the spots where they need to be. When they try to pressure him, he’s good under pressure, and he did a lot of great things. I was proud of him making sure everybody was in the right place and making the right plays.”

Boston eventually tied the game up at 32-32 late in the second quarter, but Los Angeles would again pull ahead by double-digits following halftime. The Lakers opened the second half on a 17-9 run to pull ahead 55-43.

The script would soon flip in favor of the Celtics, however, as Semi Ojeleye drilled three consecutive 3-pointers in a span of just 56 seconds to trim nine points off of the deficit. That brief stretch lit a fire under Boston.

Jayson Tatum and Abdel Nader accounted for all of Boston’s final 11 points of the third, with Tatum punctuating the quarter by draining a running 3-pointer at the buzzer from well beyond the arc. That spurt pushed Boston into the fourth quarter with a 63-57 lead.

It only got better from there for the C’s, as Tatum and his teammates continued to excel. Tatum’s three free throws at the 6:58 mark pushed Boston ahead by 10 points, at 71-61, to account for its largest lead of the game.

It wouldn’t be a Celtics-Lakers rivalry game if Los Angeles didn’t make a run at a comeback, and it did.

The Lakers answered with an 11-1 run, highlighted by seven points from Kyle Kuzma and a game-tying layup from Ball to tie the game up at 72-72 with 2:56 remaining on the clock.

Just as the Celtics did during the third quarter, they again leaned on Tatum and Ojeleye during crunch time. The duo combined to score 11 of the team’s final 15 points over the final three minutes of the game to lead the C’s into the winner’s circle while sending the Lakers and their raucous crowd home with a defeat.

“That was just really good composure by our team,” said McCarty of the comeback win in a challenging atmosphere. “We just knew if we just calmed down a little bit, got the ball to the other side and just let the plays develop, we would get what we wanted.

Tatum, yet again, was the top performer of the game. He finished with team highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds to account for his third consecutive double-double during Summer League play. Ojeleye, meanwhile notched his best performance with 19 points that featured a 5-for-9 effort from long range.

Ball and Kuzma, who finished with a game-high 31 points to go along with nine rebounds, were the top performers for Los Angeles.

The C’s will be back on the court again at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night to take on the Trail Blazers and attempt to advance to 2-0 in Las Vegas.

We've seen Jalen Brown in the real NBA and he has done fine. He started off at the beginning of last season kind of tight, but loosened up later in the year. The couple of weeks where he started at the SG in place of the injured Bradley allowed him some measure of confidence, and he carried that to the end of the season.

They are trying to get him to handle the ball more and initiate the offense. That experiment may not pan out. It seems to be throwing Jalen off his game.

Perhaps Jalen is just not a point forward. Perhaps Jason Tatum is. We will have to wait and see.

Good call Gyso exactly, they started the game with no real point, 4 swings and Zizic. Jackson has not been impressive either in SL, but he is a real pg.

I''m not worried about Jaylen either. Like others have said he is working on parts of his game now that need work. Best to try things when it doesn't count, IMO.

I am not down on Zizic's play either, but my expectations were never as high as some also.  I wish Yabusele was playing so we could see his improvement form china (if any), but maybe in pre-season.

I may be alone but I can see Jackson keeping that 15 spot on our roster one more year.

My man Hart looked good until he hurt his ankle. Wish we could have gotten him in the second round. Hate that the Lakers got him. Ball does have NBA vision , he'll need to learn when to NOT pass in the NBA, but he will bring some excitement back the Laker fans for sure.

Vegas Summer League Game number 1 - vs Lakers Empty Re: Vegas Summer League Game number 1 - vs Lakers

Post by dboss Sun Jul 09, 2017 11:30 am

There was added excitement at this game and it reminded us that the only true rivalry in the NBA is Celtics/Lakers.  While the Celtics are already competitive the Lakers are going to come on fast and surprise a lot of people.  Ball is an excellent addition to the team.  Magic and Walton want to put the ball in his hands and have him make the play.  It is a more traditional style.  They have a nice core of recent high draft picks like Randle and Ingram and added 3 more this year and they have a legit big who can shoot from distance.  They have cap space next year to continue their rebuild. In a very short period of time Magic has come in and energized this franchise.

Now to the game.  It looked like LA was going to blow Boston off court.  You had a loud sell out crowd loaded with LA fans.  Early on Boston could not seem to get untracked.

We have a lot of players on the summer roster so my focus is on those that are likely to be on the team.

Jaylen Brown had another sub-par game.  The two problem areas are the same as last year.   He remains an unreliable shooter from deep and he is way too loose with his handle.  Lack of awareness.  He was 4-13 and 0-2 from 3.  he had 3 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals plus a block

Zizic played 10 minutes.  My friends he cannot play pace and space.  I don't want to hear about giving him an opportunity.  This is a wasted pick.  Euros are supposed to be able to shoot the ball.  This one can't.  He did score on a nice drop step.  Here is the bitter truth.  KO, Amir, Jonas, Zeller AND Mickey got more game than he does.  I cannot believe I was drooling over him.  Those F highlight clips.  Well the reality has blown the hype out of the water.

Nadar can play but he still tries to do too much and seems to really struggle when driving and is contested.  I really do not see an active roster spot for him.  Perhaps a two way contract would ease the pain.

Jason Tatum is an average shooter from deep but he has the perfect mid-range game..  He has a nice handle and could probably play point forward.  He gets to his spots and makes plays.  He is an aggressive rebounder and he is an excellent free throw shooter (Hey Jaylen)  I would have still drafted Fultz but I will be cheering loudly for Tatum to make his mark on the team.  I really like his length.

Semi Ojeleye can shoot the rock and he is built like a rock.  He was an Excellent 3 point shooter in college.  What happened last night is about coaching.  Semi had been buried in the corner on offense for the first 3 games.  Jerome Allen coached them in Utah.  Last night Waltah had Semi playing up top and that is where his sweet spot is.

Jackson is one tough hombre but he cannot shoot worth a damn and therefore will be relegated to becoming a defensive point guard.  He still cannot go to his left however and that is the other skill issue with him.

Nice win on the comeback.

You don''t hear the coaches, Danny talking too much about Nader, is he going to fall between the cracks and not make this team. It seems that Jackson, who has really been unproductive, is still going to be here. Little confusing.

I prefer keeping Nader to Jackson if it comes to that. Thomas, Rozier and Banks can man the point. Does  anybody expect one of this years`s  second rounders , besides Semih, to make the roster? Can`t the Celtics control 17 players with the 2 way contact thing?

This year's second rounders (other than Semi O, as you say) will be the guys with 2 way contracts (IMO).  Both of them are 4 year college guys, and as such, are much more seasoned to play right away if someone gets injured.  Sort of "break glass in case of an emergency" situation.

Nader may make the roster just as an answer to a promise that Danny made to him last year.  Again, IMO.

I am wondering what will become of Nader, if Danny did make that promise then I suppose he will keep it. But Semi O looks pretty good out there and Jackson did have a decent game last night. He has a partially guaranteed contract, am I right?? And we have Mickey still on the roster, but not in summer league????

The spotrac salary cap page doesn't agree with the HoopsHype page:

http://www.spotrac.com/nba/boston-celtics/cap/

It says:
Jordan Mickey is non-guaranteed.
Demetrius Jackson is partially guaranteed.

Just something else to confuse us.
