Jayson Tatum might not need long to win his first championship with the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics improved to 3-0 in the NBA Summer League on Tuesday with an 88-83 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Tatum, the No. 3 pick in the draft, had 15 points and six rebounds.

Boston, winner of a record 17 NBA championships, is one of six undefeated teams after the preliminary stage on the campus of UNLV.

The Memphis Grizzlies also are 3-0 after overcoming 37 points from Utah rookie Donovan Mitchell in an 84-81 overtime victory. Mitchell, the No. 13 pick from Louisville, added eight steals.

Toronto is the No. 1 seed, followed by Cleveland, Dallas, Memphis, the Clippers and Boston, as the tournament stage begins. The top eight seeds have byes until Thursday's second round, while Nos. 9-24 are scheduled to play Wednesday.

A look at the six games played Tuesday, including one that went to sudden death:

CELTICS 88, 76ERS 83

Jabari Bird also had 15 points for the Celtics, going 7 of 10 from the field. Demetrius Jackson scored all of his 14 in the fourth quarter, while Ante Zizic had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Jaylen Brown played just 13 minutes, scoring seven points before leaving with a bruised thigh.

Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot had 16 points for the 76ers (1-2).

GRIZZLIES 84, JAZZ 81, OT

Dillon Brooks came off the Memphis bench for 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including a 3-pointer with a minute left in OT. The former Oregon star finished the game by blocking Mitchell's tying 3-point attempt with 0.2 seconds to play.

Wayne Selden added 17 points and Wade Baldwin IV had 15.

Mitchell scored 14 points in the fourth quarter before Travis Leslie tied it with a jumper with 2.6 seconds to go in regulation. Utah fell to 0-3.

TIMBERWOLVES 78, WARRIORS 76, 2 OT

C.J. Williams made a floater in the lane in the sudden-death second overtime to give Minnesota its second straight victory.

Matt Costello had 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Williams also scored 14 points for the Timberwolves (2-1). Perry Ellis and Marcus Paige each had 13.

Patrick McCaw scored 20 points and Bryce Alford had 16 for the Warriors (0-3), while Jordan Bell provided the defense. The second-rounder from Oregon finished with 11 rebounds, six blocks, five assists and five steals.

SPURS 99, TRAIL BLAZERS 85

Bryn Forbes scored 35 points, making six 3-pointers, as the Spurs improved to 2-1.

Caleb Swanigan, the No. 26 pick out of Purdue, led Portland (1-2) with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

BULLS 82, WIZARDS 73

Lauri Markkanen bounced back from a poor performance with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bulls over the winless Wizards.

Markkanen, the No. 7 pick from Arizona, missed all 10 3-point attempts and went 1 for 13 overall in a loss a night earlier.

Antonio Blakeney led Chicago (1-2) with 23 points while Denzel Valentine, who also struggled Monday, contributed 15 points and six rebounds.

Sheldon McClellan scored 20 points for Washington (0-3).

MAVERICKS 78, HEAT 73

Yogi Ferrell, a second-team All-Rookie selection, scored 23 points to lead the Mavericks in the battle of unbeatens.

No. 9 pick Dennis Smith Jr. added 16 points and five assists as Dallas improved to 3-0.

The Celtics are doing better in Vegas. I think they are getting better coaching with Walter, but maybe it is also that they are becoming more familiar with each other. It does look helter-skelter at times.

Utah went 3-0 in Utah, 0-3 in Vegas.

I would expect this team to be better now than when they started in the Utah league if only because they have now played six games together. This pretty much happens with every team that was thrown together three weeks ago.

Summer league play gets these young guys a chance to both see what they are good at and also where they need more work. So far, seems like the Cs are showing both parts in every game. Winning the last two games would be nice as well.

I think the reason they look so helter skelter at times is they are not a "team" and many are playing one on one basketball. When Tatum and Brown are in there, ever Jackson, there is more of a team atmosphere. Of course, those two or three have been practicing in Waltham together alot since the draft.

I am so impressed with Brown's actions on and off the court, so in command. Think he learned alot last season?? I do. Marcus won't be
barking at this kid this year I don't think. Last year he took it, this year?
maybe not

Our next game is tomorrow night (13th) because we are a high seed. Our opponent hasn't been decided yet. We will play one of the winners of the games that are played tonight (lower seeds).

The game time and network will be indicated on the Game On! thread.

Thanks Gyso. They have had me confused all during both Utah and Las Vegas, hard to keep up with them. But, after searching and searching a few years ago and never finding any games, they are reaping the harvest here with coverage. All those series that went 4 games lost the league a ton of money, and the 5 game championship series really sent them for a loop.
So they are getting a little bit of $$$ from the summer league.

Tatum may be displaying some very good things in the summer season that may not be found in the box score section of the paper or the internet.

Like every team in the summer leagues, none of them got to practice very much before their first game.  Helter-skelter and inconsistency was expected, but with only a good (not great summer) roster the Cs have been able to win five of six with Tatum being the most consistent of all the uniformed players in just about every game.

I am wondering if the other players already see something in this kid that makes them play a little harder and a little better every night.  Kind of appears that this could be the case especially with his exceptional play at the end of each of the closer games.

Of course, I would not expect him to lead the veterans when training camp begins, but his total game is likely to help him fit in much more comfortably at that time.  He may end up going past Brown in early season time rotation time.  His leadership will start to show full time by his second of third season.

I have has zero problems with Ainge picking him after trading the first pick and a future potential lottery pick to get him.

Clyde your last line sort of seems to say we traded a lottery pick to get him but we actually got one

Tired of hearing every night when the 76er's are playing in the summer league how interesting it will be to see if Ainge made the right decision. Seems these outsiders are just dying to be able to rub his nose in it if Faulk turns our to be better than Tatum.

I, for one, will go long term. Tatum will not get the amount of playing time that Faulk will. But he will be brought along the right way, Faulk will have alot of pressure on him, and, I saw yesterday that Ben Simmons proclaimed himself the point guard, so Faulk is the two I guess. Interesting dynamics on this team, only one ball and a bunch of guys trying to prove themselves game in and game out

Beat,

I guess I just needed to better proof read my posting because I do know that the Cs got the extra pick in that deal with Philly.

The current definition for Philadelphia 76'ers:

porcelain

noun
1.
a strong, vitreous, translucent ceramic material, biscuit-fired at a low temperature, the glaze then fired at a very high temperature.
2.
players made from this.

Not only is good basketball spoken hear on the Forum, but occasionally I'm sent to google words or phrases I'm not familiar with. I now know what "biscuit-fired" is!

My edumacation continues......

My initial reaction when Ainge traded the number 1 was wtf!!!, and I still think Fultz is going to be a he'll of a player. That being said, Tatum might be even better, and, he looks like he is ready to contribute right away. Got feeling this kid is going to be special.

Looking at the quality of draft picks there are several players that could stake a claim of being the best pick.

Tatum is certainly in the mix for that distinction.
