Nearly every rookie who enters the NBA needs to work on his body, so it's hardly surprising that Boston Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum wants to add some muscle in the few short months that stretch between the Las Vegas Summer League and the start of training camp.
But for Tatum, whose offensive game is already highly polished, it's an encouraging sign that he's aware of the physical issues he's about to face, and that he's ready to work on them.

Tatum's upper body already looks fairly advanced for a rookie -- with long arms and a good frame, the 6-foot-8 wing enjoys a physical advantage over many of his counterparts.
But Tatum's lower body could certainly use some work. He has thin legs, which could be exploited at the NBA level, especially by power forwards. Tatum's best position offensively might be the stretch-four (even though Brad Stevens would likely contend that the stretch-four doesn't really exist, and that there are only wings and bigs), attacking mismatched bigs with his quickness and smooth footwork. But the Celtics can't really afford to have another defensive mismatch for long stretches when they will already have one with Isaiah Thomas on the floor. To compete against potentially stronger opponents on the other end, it would certainly benefit Tatum to gain some weight, especially in his base.
That might be difficult to do before the season. The Celtics' Summer League wrapped up on July 15, and training camp generally begins in late September. That leaves Tatum just over two months to try to get NBA ready -- a task that generally doesn't begin to take shape until a player's second year.
The good news, for the Celtics? One of Tatum's agreed-upon attributes before the draft was his maturity, a trait that would seem to make it more likely he reaches his ceiling -- whatever that may be. There's reason to believe that Tatum will work to improve whatever needs improvement. In the short-term, it seems, Tatum and the Celtics are prioritizing his physical abilities.
For a Celtics team that emphasizes defense, and particularly defensive versatility, adding weight (and by proxy adding defendable positions) could be crucial for Tatum as he looks to earn back-up minutes at one of Boston's crowded wing positions. His offensive game is already polished, but to stay on the floor in Stevens' rotation, he'll need to defend. That necessity appears to be next on Tatum's to-do list.

MY NOTE: Yes, he will need to get stronger, 206# just isn't going to cut it. I wonder how smooth the transition from BDoo and LaCerte to whomever is taking their places will be. New facility, new techniques. Just hope the same old championships...

so was that one of the reasons we tanked last night in the Summer league?
I mean we benched our top players (and Jackson was gone as well).
when I turned the game on and saw that Tatum, Brown, Zizic and Nader were NOT playing.....I turned it off after a few minutes. we were obliviously DONE with the summer league and word came down to tank it.

Tatum will concentrate in the weight room and will probably gain about 10 solid pounds before the season starts as he is at the age when it should be easier for him to gain more muscular strength.
As was mentioned many times, he will more strength to deal with the bigger NBA guys on a minute to minute basis.
Strength ready or not, isn't he a nice draft pick so far?

I agree and think in two years he should be ready (225#) to replace Morris in the starting lineup. That's also when Morris' current contract ends.
