Report: Celtics agree to 1-year deal with C Aron Baynes

Shams Charania of The Vertical reports the Celtics are using their remaining room exception to sign veteran center Aron Baynes to a 1-year/$4.3 million deal.
by Jared Weiss, CLNS Radio Jul 9, 2017, 4:24pm EDT
LAS VEGAS -- Center Aron Baynes has agreed to a one-year, $4.3 million deal with the Boston Celtics, reports Shams Charania of The Vertical. The Celtics used their remaining room exception to sign Baynes and fill out the roster with an experienced big to compliment struggling rookie Ante Zizic.
Although many of Zizic’s troubles during summer league may be due to the fatigue of coming straight off a long European season, the Celtics needed a more reliable big to start next to Al Horford early on. They find that guy in Baynes, who has made a steady career for himself as an intimidator in the post.
Baynes’ rim protection has been inconsistent over the years, but he was solid for Detroit last year and was perhaps their most effective interior defender on a team that included Andre Drummond. The PIstons had a 98.5 defensive rating with Baynes on the floor while he put up a 57-percent true shooting percentage on the other end.
Among defenders with at least 500 possessions, Baynes ranked 3rd in the NBA at 0.785 points per possesssion allowed, trailing Nikola Mirotic and Draymond Green. The fact that notoriously mediocre defender Mirotic is number one in those rankings makes them questionable the majority of the top 20 are all top-tier defenders. Defenders shot 10.7% below their averages when he was the primary defender inside six feet.
Baynes has a solid 16.2 rebound percentage over his five-year career, but ranked just 68th in the league in the middle of the pack with most backup bigs last season. He will not revolutionize the Celtics’ rebounding, but he is now their best man on the boards.

So, looks like Zizic will be a bench player. They are saying that the long season he has just gone thru is one of the reasons he is struggling

We needed a big, or two, Zizic or no Zizic.
This guy is beef on the hoof. 6'10" 260#
I'm not expecting much from him, but we needed a veteran NBA bruiser for at least one year until Zizic's learning curve flattens out.

Re: AARON BAYNES
Under Contract
Bigs - Horford, Baynes, Zizic, Yabby, Theis
Wings - Hayward, Crowder, Morris, Tatum, Brown, Mickey
Ball Handlers - IT, Smart, Rozier, Jackson
13 players. We need to get to 14 (or 15, or 17 with 2-way contracts).
Possibles (that we know of):
Abdel Nader
Simi Ojelaye
Trevor Thompson (just because he's a big, 7' 260#)
More coming, I'm betting.

Typical low cost free agent signing to add some size in the post. Can we find someone who can get a fingernail on a shot?

GYSO,
Thanks. I kept adding them as I remembered them and didn't do a good job of updating the number.
So, we have 15. That leaves 2 for 2-way contracts. I can't see Nader doing that this year.

Re: AARON BAYNES
Baynes most definitely makes us deeper in the bushy beard department, so that's good.
Supposedly, he can board. That is good. Baynes is a bigger big than Morris, our last new big. We're still going to need more.

Re: AARON BAYNES
Sean Elliot of the Spurs TV broadcasting used to call Baynes the Big Banger. Pop didn't like him in practice because people got hurt. He sets a mean screen and hustles. He is not a great athlete, but makes up for it in effort. Team player and interesting to watch. He can make his free throws and his range is about 15 feet. He rebounds and likes to slam it home. His hands are average and and he is not a leaper or shotblocker. He has a ring from his San Antonio days.

Bob,
You were at 12 when I reached for the "quote" button. You must have hit "send" on your last edit at the same time because it came up with 13. That made me quite perplexed and I had to count at least five times to be sure I hadn't screwed something up.
We have a pretty much a full house. I bet Mickey is gone. Probably Jackson as well. I can see us carrying 14 players with the big team, with both the 2-way contracts going to our last two second round picks.
Danny might not be done right now, but he isn't far from it.

Re: AARON BAYNES
Not a shotblocker but was very disruptive to scorers around the basket. Defensive percentages around the basket and against the pick and roll are very strong. He shoots free throws well and has a decent 15 foot shot. Maybe they'll be able to extend the range on it. He'll be able to help us replace Amir's minutes and match up with the NBA biggest centers.

Detroit reporters claiming he was their best paint defender, blocks or no blocks. 85 % free throw shooter? I`m in.

Re: AARON BAYNES
I never heard of this guy before this morning, but he sure is big enough.
Seems like he does some things fairly well-85% free throws for one.
If he can bang around inside with big guys from the other teams he will serve a purpose.

I never heard of him either. He opted out of a 6.5 million dollar contact a while back and signed with Boston for 4.3. Might have misjudged the market.

Only a one year deal. Makes you wonder who gave him advice.

Re: AARON BAYNES
Interestingly, on Nov. 30, 2014 Baynes had 13 points and 5 rebounds in just 19 minutes against us (including making the only three-pointer of his career) in a 111-89 Spurs victory in Boston. Here's the boxscore:

Baynes wins the award for being the most intimidating looking player on our roster. Hands down.
We used to run Kelly Olynyk out there to scare people...

Re: AARON BAYNES
Solid pick up for Danny with the space available. Cowen's will like his toughness for sure.
He'll provide the vet back up (yes he is only a backup) center for Horford, until Zizic is ready to fill the void in the future, IMO.
Team is pretty much set now, unless some deal comes along that Danny can't refuse.
Starters:
Horford
Morris
Crowder
Hayward
Thomas
rotational players:
Smart
Jaylen
Tatum
Rozier
Baynes
Deep bench/Developmental players:
Zizic
Yabusele
Semi
Nader
Jackson
Perhaps Green is brought back on another minimum wage deal ti replace Jackson or Nader.
