Thomas for Irving?

Post by wideclyde on Fri Jul 21, 2017 6:02 pm

As much as I have loved what Thomas has brought to Boston since arriving, I would trade him to Cleveland to get
Kyrie Irving.

Irving is younger and does not only have to rely upon his quickness to achieve success. He rebounds and plays better defense as well.
He also will be less expensive for the 2019 season if Thomas does get a max contract (that would start with the 2019 season).

Here is how I would do it. Sign Thomas to a contract equal to what Irving makes so that no other Cs have to get sent along for
salary matching purposes. Thomas is no guarantee to re-sign in Boston next summer.

Thomas will sign a two year sign and trade deal because he will triple his salary for the 2018 season even though he would have to delay his
free agency for one year. His statements about "backing up the Brinks truck" clearly indicates that he is highly monetarily driven.

Why Cleveland does it. They will be getting an all star player back for their out going all star and the Cs may be the only team
who might do this.

Why Boston does this trade...Distinct overall upgrade at the point guard spot, in my opinion. Thomas has not yet proven himself
to be 100% physically ready to the 2018 season. Last we saw him he was in a suit on the bench. I am not sure that he is worth
a max contract for five years beginning in 2019.

No thanks. I'll pass on anyone who would rather "be the man" than win. Always felt Kyrie is over-rated. If not for LeBron he would embody the big-stats on a shitty team player. IT is a warrior.

The rumors are he requested a trade to the Spurs, Minny, Miami or NYK.

Not Boston.

What a freaking ego, that he'd want to go to a disaster like the Knicks just so he could have his own team.

IT and Kyrie had the exact same defensive rating last year. Meanwhile, IT scored more (more efficiently) and had better assist numbers.

Exactly. This guy doesn't understand winning or even sports. I'll take IT everyday and twice on Sunday.

If I'm Jerry West, I'm trying to get LeBron to the Clips. Forget Irving, he can stay in CLE

Thornwell, Gallo and 2 FRP's for LeBron

Hi,
The above posts answer, sort of, my question on another thread - should we trade for KI - we should not.
Though, I didn't mean IT.
Speaking about IT for KI. I don't think KI is a natural ball handler - that function was mostly performed by Lebron. He's mostly a shooter.
As for defensive capabilities, Kyrie is better only by 7in and 10lb than IT, IMO.
Whatever is the outcome of this news, one thing is clear - something's rotten in the kingdom of Cavs which benefits us.

IT may be more hurt then we know, so at this point the probability of a trade involving IT is moot.  That is why Rozier is here, Larkin, Bird and Allen was signed.

112288,

Better pray that Thomas is up to par this coming year - make that 2 prayers because the reality is that Haywood may take some time adjusting (hopefully he can) to playing the shooting guard spot - taking the team from a position of backcourt strength, Bradley and Thomas, last year to one with some serious flaws.

Boston has tons of assets to make this happen but would it be a good move?

Cavs would want IT and probably Jaylen and 2 first rounders including the Golden Egg.

I am pretty certain that the Cavs will want to maximize what they can get and Danny will tell them to F...off.

Dboss,  I agree totally. My thoughts are why would any team that believes in the importance of chemistry and culture (Celtics-Spurs) would be willing to part with meaningful assets for a guy who apparently desires to only want to be "the man". This kid has won a title, basically made the title winning play, has been to 3 straight finals, is almost guaranteed to make another finals appearance and, is not underpaid. But yet he wants out, and includes the worst run organization in the league, the Knicks, as a preferred destination. I don't think that I'd want him as my alpha dog, best player, team leader if I have hopes of winning a championship. He is undoubtedly a great player but I don't see him as the type to LEAD a team to a title.

I have to agree with you about this. Our team has an impessive roster and Danny still has all those first rounders include the last Golden Egg.

If we were talking Anthony Davis it may be a different narrative.

I hAve no interest  in a individual who has lived his whole life in the modern world and still thinks the world is flat..

But let me get this straight, well paid guy with odds at playing for his sports most prestigious  award  next summer and then (if all the rumors are true) having LeBron basically handing him back the steering wheel  and letting him be the star all over again now wants out of that situation.

I don't get it..  for the sake of argument  let's look at what it would mean if he left Ohio and went to new york.

He would be trading the chance to be "the man" in a year after another shot at an NBA title this year in Ohio to become "the man" in new York now, on a team that might not even make the playoffs

He would be leaving a semi disfunction organization at the moment for one that is in perpetual disfunction.

He would be trading a state income tax at a little over 5% for one about 8% or roughly taking a million dollar a year paycut to leave.

This says a lot about somebody in cavs organization. Either LeBron is a worse teammate to anyone not  in the kissmyassclub than anyone of us had imagined. Or irving is a bigger idiot than anyone suspected, and that would be saying a lot after the flat earth scenerio.

REPORT: CELTICS HAVE CALLED CAVALIERS ABOUT POTENTIAL KYRIE IRVING TRADE

By DJ Bean July 24, 2017 2:23 PM

Celtics fans aren’t the only ones thinking of ways Kyrie Irving could end up in Boston.

Even though it would be hard to imagine last season’s No. 2 seed in the East trading one of the best players in the league to last season’s No. 1 seed in the East, ESPN’s Zach Lowe wrote Monday that the Celtics have indeed called the Cavs about the 25-year-old point guard.

Wrote Lowe:

Most teams, including the asset-rich Celtics, have placed the obligatory call letting Cleveland know they would like to be kept in the loop, sources say. Boston could offer Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and one of their golden picks -- Brooklyn's pick next season, or the Lakers/Kings pick they got from Philly in the Markelle Fultz deal. It's unclear if they would dangle all of that, but those picks could represent the young stud Cleveland needs. Regardless, a deal between the East's two best teams seems unlikely.

While nobody’s counting on Irving joining the Celtics, a trade of Irving elsewhere could still swing the balance in the East in Boston’s favor depending on what Cleveland gets back. Irving reportedly requested a trade from Cleveland earlier this month.

Matty

No doubt this is a head scratcher.

Boston is doing their due diligence. Deep playoff runs with trips to the finals is difficult for teams to sustain over an extended period of time. The Celtics find themselves in a very unique situation where they are a top 5 team and are sitting on enough future picks to extend their competitive presence for a very long time.

DA did not try for the quick fix. No need to deplete the cupboard for what appears to be a talented but flawed headcase.

He can say it all he wants. He's not a free agent and does not have a No trade clause. The Cavs can trade him anywhere they'd like and he gotta go. Too bad Kyrie, you have zero leverage.

Is the interest NOT in Irving, but being a third party in a trade where the Celtics might strengthen their team more, a real good center???
Why would they give up trade chips like the Brooklyn pick if they intend to make a run at someone in February or July?  Irving is not the answer for this team. Would Hayward wonder why he came if he was going to be playing along side of Irving instead of IT???  Too many if's.

Just a way of keeping the NBA relevant while we are heading into a dead month!

Big question! Was Irving a bad soldier during his years with the Cavs? If not - I would think that the Cav management team and ownership would hold onto him and expect that he would put up the same numbers this coming year. No need to trade him for anything less then equal value.
