If he does sign a two-way contract, Bird will split time this season between the Celtics and their G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. The wing had some impressive outings in summer league, including a 15-point game against the Philadelphia 76ers (on 7-for-10 shooting) and a 17-point game against the Golden State Warriors (on 8-for-10 shooting).
The new two-way concept, introduced in the latest collective bargaining agreement, allows a player to spend up to 45 days in the NBA per season (including any day he participates in practices, drills, workouts, or conditioning work, or is on the active NBA roster). A two-way player receives a different pay check for time spent in the G-League vs. time spent in the NBA, and will not be eligible to appear in NBA playoff games or sign with another NBA team.
The Celtics have already used one of their two-way contracts on fellow second-round pick Kadeem Allen. That leaves one two-way slot open for Bird.
