NBA trade rumors: Cavs shopping first-round pick acquired in Kyrie Irving deal
After a wild week of rumors and speculation, the Cavs finally sent Kyrie Irving to the Celtics on Wednesday in exchange for a package of Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, the Nets' 2018 first-round pick and the Heat's 2020 second-round pick. So, we're all good here? We can all just chill out until the season begins, right?

No, of course not. The Cavs might just be getting started. Now that Cleveland has acquired some valuable assets, general manager Koby Altman could be looking to make another big deal. The Cavs have already fielded calls about the Brooklyn pick, according to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com.

That first-rounder could end up being a top-five pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, giving the owner of the selection an opportunity to take a prospect like Michael Porter Jr., Marvin Bagley III, Luka Doncic, DeAndre Ayton or Mohamed Bamba. As Vardon notes, Cleveland also owns its 2018 first-round pick along with a few second-rounders as well, though its first-round pick in 2019 will go to the Hawks as part of the Kyle Korver trade (top-10 protected in 2019 and 2020).

The Irving trade was really about the Brooklyn pick for Cleveland, not Thomas or Crowder. ESPN's Zach Lowe previously reported the Cavs "wanted a veteran ready to help LeBron (James) now, but a blue-chipper was the priority." The pick opens a number of doors for Altman. It's a matter of present vs. future.

If the Cavs believe they can persuade James to stay when he becomes a free agent after the 2017-18 season, then the pick can be used as trade bait in order to bring back an important piece in the chase for another ring. Maybe the Cavs throw in a couple of their own players as well, like Iman Shumpert and/or Kevin Love. (They nearly sent Love to the Nuggets in a three-team deal this offseason which would have brought Paul George to Cleveland.)

Could the Cavs make it the centerpiece of a trade with the Pelicans for Anthony Davis or DeMarcus Cousins? Would the Grizzlies take that call if it meant putting Marc Gasol on the table? What would it take beyond the pick to snag a star?

There's also the possibility of keeping it and simply taking a talented youngster. If the Cavs' front office doesn't feel comfortable with James' level of commitment, Cleveland can switch gears and rebuild the roster without the typical devastation that comes with losing a franchise player for nothing.

At this point, Altman doesn't need to pull the trigger on any potential deal. He proved he is comfortable surveying the landscape and finding the best possible outcome when he got everything he wanted for Irving. After the four-time All-Star guard requested a trade, the Cavs were in complete disarray. Now, Cleveland has options. Prying that first-rounder out of Danny Ainge's hands made that possible.

My take:

well, that didn't take long! I wonder who the Cav's are looking to bring in, Gasol, Melo, Cousins?

Loves' salary will match most anyone who could be available , add in the Nets pick and the Cav's could get another star player.

My guess is James will stay in Cleveland and the Cavs probably know he's leaning that way too.

If that's so, packaging up the pick they got from us now would make sense.

They're going to be working hard to try and stay ahead of The Celtics, and push for another title or two.

LeBron cannot play coy and leave a franchise in the dark about his plans in a contract year the way he did to Cleveland in 2010 and to a lesser extent the Heat in 2014, it would be far to damaging to his reputation/legacy if he were not only to leave but leave in a selfish manner with bad blood.

One would hope he has given the Cavs a list of players that if they acquired one of them using the pick as bait would make him pretty much a lock to stay. I doubt the Pelicans would move Davis for Love and that pick, but maybe a SLIGHT upgrade is to be found somewhere and if it means LeBron would stay the Cavs have to make that move.

If the trade deadline approaches and the Cavs have yet to find a deal using the pick to add another current all-star and w/o LeBron saying, 'hey I'd like to stay here through June and see if we can win another title but I can't promise you I'll re-sign this summer so do what you have to based on that and I'll waive my no trade clause so you're not left with nothing like last time" and he says nothing about his future and then leaves, it will be unforgivable in my mind.

I would certainly think that Cleveland had every intent to try to use this draft pick as a trade piece from the second that they asked for it in the Irving trade.

Even if this draft pick somehow turns into the first pick in next year's draft he will not help the Cavs win right now and also not for at least three seasons. Also, this pick, by himself, is not going to turn what is currently an older roster around when he arrives if James leaves. The Cavs will have to dump out all of LeBron's groupie buddies which will slot them back into an expansion team mode.

Cleveland needs to win it all again year to even have a chance at keeping James in Cleveland beyond this year. Their mentality has to be to use this pick to help them beginning in October or at least at the trade deadline in February.

Which team(s) do you think will have the cap space to to sign James next year ? - which of those teams do you think James would want to go to ? - (assuming that he plays at an all league level this year.) Please state logic backing your opinion.

There is a reason why LeBron signed a two-year contract as opposed to a longer deal. This gives him maximum flexibility to "take his talents elsewhere" if he sees fit. James has already voiced some displeasure with the Cavs management earlier this summer and in my eyes, where there's smoke, there's fire.

Kyrie told the Cavs long before his contact was up that he wanted a trade. This allowed them to haul in some good assets to build for the future. James on the other hand is remaining silent and wields a no-trade clause.

If the Cavs are smart, they'll speak with James/his agent to gauge his desire to stay in Cleveland. And if not, they need to pick up assets for him. Otherwise the Cavs will have lost him *twice* for nothing.

In either case, I think James will be on the move for greener pastures.

Why are you asking others to do this research for you?

Everyone knows that the Lakers are the team he would most likely sign with were he to leave Cleveland. They,ll have space for one max player and if they can find someone to take Luol Deng off their hands with less than 7m coming back would have space for another (Paul George is their hope).

The Spurs and Rockets are the two dark horses. Like with Deng, the Rockets would need someone to take Ryan Anderson off their hands and then hope that LeBron and CP3 will take discounts to play together at like 17-18 mil a season (unlikely). The Spurs will have the cap space for LBJ at like 25m if a couple guys opt out of player options (Danny Green and Rudy Gay) and they are probably worth more than what those options are for. But LeBron might not view San Antonio as a career finishing glamour destination, so again unlikely.

It is probably Lakers or Cavs. The fact that he has not signed or committed to Cleve past this year and that Kyrie wanted to abandon ship so badly speaks volumes.

Swish,

I'm thinking the Lakers for right now. They have a unique combination of assets and cap room that could allow them to make some big moves next summer.

There may be a dark horse in the running but I don't know who that might be yet.
