Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

The Lakers went down big early in the game and then fought back. This time it was against the Boston Celtics and while they made up a lot of the difference, they couldn’t quite get there.

This 107-96 win over the Lakers was Boston’s 10th in a row. Even shorthanded as they are now, they are a very good team and provided some lessons for the Lakers.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

1. To fix his jumper, Lonzo Ball has been working on his balance. This came up after the game when Ball was asked whether he’s working on his footwork while shooting. Ball said balance was something the coaching staff has been working with him on. The Lakers have made clear they aren’t interested in altering Ball’s shooting motion, at least not during the season, but now we know they are working on some mechanics to help his shooting. Ball made four of 15 shots last night and one of five three-pointers.

2. Julius Randle made a very positive impact for the Lakers when he entered the game. That was later than it normally is, because Lakers Coach Luke Walton wanted to get Andrew Bogut into the game in the first quarter to fight against some early physicality the Celtics were throwing at the Lakers. Randle was a big part of why the Lakers were able to claw back from their 21-point deficit. He went 5-of-9 and scored 16 points in 21:28.

3. Walton was upset with the Lakers’ help side defense. “It wasn’t our individual defense that was terrible tonight, it was our team defense,” Walton said. “The work that we’ve been doing and with the help side and the mentality we’ve been building, all of that went out the door today. It was ... We were late to every rotation. There were passes we saw from the bench, we switched, they fronted, they threw it over the top, and we didn’t react until the guy already caught the ball. When you’re slow reacting like that against a good team it’s not a good thing.” Brandon Ingram’s response to Walton’s criticism? “That wasn’t us.”

4. Brook Lopez’s minutes went down as the Lakers tried to go small. For two games he had been shooting exceptionally well from three and on Wednesday night he missed all four threes he attempted. Lopez only played 18 minutes and had 10 points with four rebounds, two blocked shots, three turnovers and one assist.

5. Ball had a lot to deal with Wednesday night both on and off the court. He revealed a little bit about his concern over his brother’s situation after the game, saying, “It’s still my little brother, but I’ve got to come out here and play.” On the court, he faced Kyrie Irving, a handful for anyone to defend, and boos from the Celtics crowd. It didn’t seem to bother Ball, and his teammates noticed. “That’s something that comes with being a No. 2 pick, something that comes with being Lonzo Ball,” Ingram said. “He does a good job of blocking it out every time he steps out on the basketball court. He doesn’t worry about that. He’s playing within our team and our organization.”

bob
MY NOTE:  "The Lakers have made clear they aren’t interested in altering Ball’s shooting motion, at least not during the season, but now we know they are working on some mechanics to help his shooting."  Wuh?  They're not trying to alter his shooting motion but they are trying to change his mechanics?  Huh?  Is it just me, or is there a disconnect in that sentence?

Randle was the key driver that brought them back.  That "physicality" the author is talking about was 6'10" 255# Baynes manhandling 7'0" 275# Lopez.  My biggest regret this season so far, of the things that are manageable, is that Baynes is only on a one-year contract.  He is exactly, precisely the type of moose we need.

The coach says you're late on rotations and Ingram says "that's not us"?  With today's shooters and movement to the perimeter rotating for help defense is even more important than ever.  You cannot have a good defense without good help defense, but what is Ingram doing saying that?  The coach says you're late, you're late.

The fifth takeaway from the game is that Ball focused on playing ball?  Not that the Lakers ran very well, better than the Celtics?  Not that they didn't give up?  Not that they got within a possession of wiping out a 21 point deficit?

In case you didn't notice, this is an LA Times article.

Bob, all the points you made were spot on.

Randle impressed me. First time I ever saw him play. Otherwise the Lakers have a long way to go. Ball has the worst % in the NBA shooting inside the paint. That's piss poor for a #2 pick. Sure glad we drafted Tatum instead.

Sure glad we've got Moose Baynes, but I also wish we'd tied him up for longer.

Sure glad we've got Kyrie, Marcus Morris, and Theis - all excellent off season pick ups by Danny.

Actually I am in love with this entire Celtics team. Every single player on the roster, except Nader, who I never see.

One factor I failed to mentioned was the play of Shane Larkin.

When Brad put him in the game late he did an outstanding job staying with ball. Larkin is very quick and has an almost uncanny ability to slither over the tops of picks and still stay right on his man.

The Lakers are in a deep state of denial. I do not think his so-called jumper can be fixed. They need to send him to a hypnotist where he can be hypnotized to forget about how to shoot. Then they need to start from scratch with all the basics of shooting. Lavar did a very poor job teaching Lonzo how to shoot.

dboss,

I don't know if the Lakers are in denial, but this author sure is.  LaVar said that he tells his kids "there is no correct way to shoot, just find the shot that works for you and make that work".  Well, that does work great when you're 6'6" 190# and all the players guarding you are shorter and slower than you because you're a prodigy, you can do what starts off looking like an off-center chest pass for a shot, but not so great as you march your way up the rungs of success and the players guarding you are 6'7" 230# uber-athletes with 7'0" wingspans like Jaylen Brown.

We all knew Ball has a weird shot, you had to be vacationing on the far side of the moon for the past year not to, and the rest of his game might offset that but to say they're not altering his shot, only his shot mechanics, is QUITE delusional.

Hi,
I'd add one more takeaway. Last night LAL looked discombobulated, especially in the first quarter. I don't remember such high number of passes to nowhere from a NBA team during a regular season.
But whatever. The worse Lakers perform the better for Celtics.

Only reason why the Lakers came within striking distance is the Celts shot poorly in the 2nd half.

Maybe the Lakers were just playing well because they were facing the Celtics.
Later it's going to be Lakers at Washington.
Don't be surprised if the Lakers get beat badly.

The Lakers played their worst quarter of the year in the first quarter.
They seemed nervous and hesitant.
The last 3 quarters LA outscored Boston by 6.

Shooting woes have happened all year to Boston.
They are 24th in the league in FG%.

Fierce,

Washington isn't as reliable at home this year as they were last year, they are 2-3 at home heading into the game tonight.

Last night Ball played 39 mins, KCP played 36, Ingram 37 and Kuzma 34.  Only Lopez played low minues, 18.  Fortunately for the Lakers they are very young, their legs will come back quickly, and they also have Clarkson and Randle that can come off the bench and play heavier minutes if needed.

What surprised me last night is that Zubac was a Coaches - DNP.  He looked good last year and yet Bogut came off the bench first.

Bob Washington will beat LA tonight. Their ability to win at home is greater than the Lakers ability to win on the road. Also, since Washington loss to the Lakers out there they have a score to settle. Lastly playing back to back games is as much of a mental challenges as it is a physical one.

Lakers may not make it back home with any wins.

The Lakers have not been that much better 46.8 vs 44%

What hurts the eyes is the Lakers horrendous .304% from behind the arc. Boston is at 36%

The Lakers can score when teams let them run up and down but last night the Lakers shot 43.5% from the floor and a dreadful 20.8% from deep. Their free throw shooting continues to be less than helpful. last night they shoot 73.9%. they were held to only 96 points which is almost 10 points below their season average while Boston scored 3 points above their season average.

Just setting the actual record straight.

Fierce was saying the reason LA got back in the game was because of Boston’s poor shooting.
Giving up 65 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters is why LA got back in the game.
You can’t blame it on poor shooting when poor shooting is becoming by a pattern.
