POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
Celtics Wrap: Heat End Boston’s Win Streak Despite C’s Comeback
NESN by Nicholas Goss on Wed, Nov 22, 2017 at 10:00PM
The Celtics nearly pulled off another double-digit comeback, but the Miami Heat held on to their lead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to win 101-94 and end Boston’s win streak at 16. The Celtics fell behind early and trailed for nearly the entire game before trimming the deficit to one late in the fourth. That’s when Miami pulled away, as Goran Dragic (27 points) and Dion Waiters (26 points) led the way offensively for the Heat. Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 24 points. The C’s were hurt by poor shooting from 3-point range (36 percent) and the free throw line (70 percent). The C’s fall to 16-3 with the loss, while the Heat improve to 8-9. Here’s how it all went down.
STARTING FIVE PG: Kyrie Irving SG: Jaylen Brown SF: Jayson Tatum PF: Al Horford C: Aron Baynes
ROUGH START The Heat went on an 11-0 run after trailing 4-0 to start the game. Miami point guard Goran Dragic led that run with six points. Miami didn’t let up, either, finishing the quarter with a 27-16 lead thanks to excellent shooting. The Heat hit on 11 of their 21 shot attempts, including three 3-pointers. The Heat bench also outscored their Celtics counterparts 8-3. Irving led the Celtics with six points on 3-for-4 shooting, while the rest of the team shot 4-for-18. Horford went 0-for-4 from the field but did grab five rebounds.
DRAGIC ON A ROLL Miami opened the second quarter on fire, forcing Boston to take a timeout after the Heat’s increased to 37-21 on a Dragic 3-pointer. The Heat shot 51.3 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range, giving them a 54-41 lead at the half. Dragic led all players with 20 points o 6-for-9 shooting and a 6-for-6 mark at the foul line. He hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the second quarter that put Miami back up 13 after the C’s trimmed an 18-point deficit to 10. Tatum (10 points), Irving (nine) and Brown (eight) led the way offensively for the Celtics. They struggled shooting from beyond the arc, hitting just five of their 18 3-point shots. Boston also struggled on the boards as Miami tallied a 27-19 edge in rebounds.
HEAT WAVE The Celtics played well for most of the third quarter, and trimmed the deficit to single digits a few times, though they never got closer than eight. Each time the C’s got under 10, the Heat responded. The last few minutes of the quarter belonged to the Heat, as they stretched their lead to 16 at 79-63 at the end of the third quarter. The Celtics missed their last five shots of the quarter over a four-minute span. Irving led the C’s with 12 points through 36 minutes, but he shot just 5-for-14. Miami did a good job contesting his drives to the rim.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT A 12-0 run by the Celtics cut the Heat lead to just two at 91-89. Defense, again, was the driver of the comeback. The Celtics got stops and defensive rebounds, while also capitalizing on open looks at the offensive end of the floor. Boston got within 91-90 before Miami went on an 8-1 run to seal the win. A pair of 3-point shots from Waiters, one of which came after two missed free throws by Horford, were huge for the Heat. Miami hit its free throws in the final minute to finish the game.
HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT Tatum’s spin to the basket is an effective move. UP NEXT The Celtics return to TD Garden for a Friday night game against the Orland Magic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
OK MAKE THAT 79 - 3 !
On a serious note, this has been coming for a while. As Brad stated we are not playing well despite the winning streak.
Maybe it is mental exhaustion ........maybe physical exhaustion.........or maybe we need some tweaking with the lineup.................new faces off the bench...........a trade??????
Whatever the case Friday at home should help right the ship for another winning streak unless the players a full of turkey!
Besides the loss, the only regret I have is loosing to those SOB's in Miami...........I hope we return the favor at home and bury them by 40!!!!!!

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
we have rightly so put a big target on our backs. Teams are ramped up to play us now when perhaps before they wouldn't have given it much of an after thought.
We could have folded and let it go.
But we got within a point with plenty of time left to finish the deal. Some missed free throws (at least 3 that I recall, 1 by Smart 2 by Horford) Some bad turnovers in the last 2-3 minutes and allowing a couple offense rebounds doomed pretty much sealed the deal.
We didn't shoot well. (again)
Miami shot pretty well against us and made some tough shots.
As far as changes and tweaks (and trades?).... IT'S A 1 GAME LOSING STREAK !! I don't think i'd sound the alarm to man the lifeboats quite yet.
If that's the case look at what OKC did to the dubs last night, Dubs checked out long before that game was over. We battled till the final minute.
Now a little home cooking for a stretch will help as much as anything. 6 of our next 7 are home where we are 7-1 (BEST HOME RECORD IN THE LEAGUE) (only loss at home was to the Bucks the game after Hayward got injured without nary a day to really adjust)
We have played more road games (11) than anyone other than Atlanta that has also played 11.
On to Friday and looking at going 1-0 post Thanksgiving.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
A turkey before turkey day. We knew we couldn't keep shooting like that, keep going in the hole like that and keep pulling it out in the end. We all knew that dream was going to end eventually, right? So, it did. BFD. We are still on top of the NBA. We didn't lose to a contender like Houston or GSW or Cleveland (they're getting their act together and are now in 4th place in the EC, and IT isn't back yet). How bad was it last night? Not only did they shoot 49% but they outrebounded us by 11, 48-37, and that just doesn't happen much anymore.
I've been saying Danny should use the DPE for another big. I am reconsidering that position. I now think he should use it for a "break glass in case of emergency" shooter. Bring me the head of Gerald Green! Or someone like that. Nader could be that person but Brad doesn't have that much confidence in him and, to be honest, with the few minutes Nader has gotten so far Nader doesn't have much confidence in Nader right now either. Nader and Yabby should carpool up north to get some reps. Morris should go to the bench, not because he's not good but for the same reason Smart comes off the bench, because that's where he can do the most good. The problem isn't that he was 3-9 last night, that's not normal for him, he's a good scorer. The problem is that Marcus Smart was 3-9 and Terry Rozier was 2-8 and that is fairly normal for them.
I agree with 112288 when he said that he thinks there's some mental fatigue here. Horford has been sleepwalking the whole 3 game road trip. VERY tentative on offense. Baynes has been largely unproductive as well, but when he's on the floor as a starter he can be a role player and that's ok because of the talent levels of the other players on the floor with him.
A solid game by Tatum. 3-9 after 3 but 5-11 at the end.
Brown, also, with a solid game, although his 3 TOs weren't helpful. One was a 3/4 cross-court pass to Horford in the 4th quarter.
Irving with a 6-8 12 point 4th. 1-4 from the line for the game. Just not our night.

One game, one loss after an impressive run. Take a day off, eat some turkey, carbo-load on the sweet potatoes, and come back on Friday ready to start another run. Good advice for all of us.
16-3 is still the envy of the league.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
16-3 is a great start to anyone's season. Couldn't ask for much more from such a very young team.
BUT, the shooting woes, especially early in the game, have been a problem for several weeks now and has led to about a half dozen games with double digit first half deficits. The sample size is no longer "too small" to not be taken seriously.
I am sure that Coach Stevens will find the solution sooner rather than later.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
No team has ever lost its first two games and then gone on to win 17 games in a row. You could look it up. Every team now has to wait till next year on that one.
It's been obvious for some time that the Celtics were playing the streak not each possession. It was fun while it lasted but let's hope the play is better on the next one.
What the streak did do was expose some of the flaws of this roster. Team scoring has been an issue since IT arrived. If the season is to come down to whether or not Abdel Nader can get it done then this team is in trouble. The one player with the skill set to make a difference in times like these is the last man to get into the game. Bear is becoming this season's Mickey. A guy who can light up the stat sheet against inferior opposition but fails to make it off the bench in the NBA. He needs playing time and a trip to Maine could make a difference, especially if he isn't going to get off the bench during this upcoming homestand. His energy still looks good on the bench, he is often seen cheering on the team and greeting the starters as they hit the bench for a time out. We've always needed that skill set of his.
The common sense solutions are the ones that have been noted the past few games. Keep Baynes in the starting lineup and bring the MARCUS' off the bench to give punch to the second unit. Stop playing Smart so much and when he starts throwing bricks take him out for a few minutes. He is neither as good nor as bad as some of us think. He is what he is and that is not a guy who can be relied upon to score.
Brad has had about all the heat checks I want to see for awhile. Most of the problems with this team are his responsibility. The idea of cutting the rotation to 8 or 9 players is not what got this team to 16-3! If this team is to be about space and pace then let's get back to that and the excellent ball movement. The team has taken a step back in trying to fit Morris into the lineup. Clearly he can still play but he has disrupted the chemistry that had been building when he was dealing with his legal troubles and injury. Not a real big deal but something that needs to be addressed. That pretty much sums things up for me. Trader Danny needs to become a tinker.
We are ever so much closer this season to getting back to the grand stage of the NBA Finals which, in my remembrance, is the birthright of every Celtic fan.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
I agree with many of the things written by mulcogiseng.
It felt like the playoffs had begun. Winners continue. Losers go home. Every game became a one game playoff.
Miami is going nowhere. Their ceiling is to perhaps gel and become a 4th to 8th seed, then get bounced out of the playoffs. Yesterday was their Super Bowl. And they got very lucky. The shot that hit the top of the backboard then dropped in was a balloon getting popped. Then came missed free throws. It wasn't the worst way to end the streak. It was a great comeback.
I am feeling this way about a number of players. I am not giving up on them long-term, although I am not too excited about their futures. Yet, I am still obligated to root for them because they are still on the roster.
Larkin
Nader
Bird
Ojeleye
Yabusele
Of the five above, I only see current roles for Ojeleye and Larkin for the regular season but still not too much and then only towards the far end of the bench. Five could be too many scrubs for a title contender.
I think we need one more big, someone taller and more athletic than Morris. It could be Theis, but even if he fits in, that still only leaves four quality bigs. There's no room for error, no internal competition and no insurance.
Rozier and Larkin hitting rock bottom came at a very bad time. It turned us from having one unique brick layer in Smart to experiencing a contagious shooting flu.
Unfortunately, it also seems that Horford is best if he is preserved. If Al is going to be pushed and pushed by Brad, he will have nothing left in the tank for the playoffs.
The rim gets smaller. Players have more tendency to rely on hero ball.
The best part of yesterday in addition to the comeback was the play of Marcus Smart. He only shot 3-9, but he had four assists and no turnovers. He seemed through the eye test to play much better on offense.
Some of this is on Brad, but if there are five scrubs on the roster, and add in Hayward out for at least the regular season, Stevens doesn't have much to work with. He does have top talent for starters, but our depth is not nearly as good as it first seemed.
I agree Danny might need to make a move. Whether that is tinkering or something bigger, I don't know. The two players we seem to be missing by consensus are another big and someone who can score points.
I hope Danny can get those two players through trading from the scrub pool and the draft picks including Lakers/Sacramento. He may also be able to trade Rozier. I can't see us trading Smart if the goal is to win it this year. He's just too much part of the team. It'd be ripping out the heart of the defense.
One might not want to trade the last golden goose pick just in case it pans out like Brooklyn picks. Yet, the C's do not need any more rookies unless they are phenoms in the Tatum/Brown tier.
I agree with what mulcogiseng said about Morris. He is a solid player, but Brad might have forced the issue a bit too much which hurt chemistry and other player trajectories.
I am not blaming Morris or Stevens for anything. It just happened that way.
If we can bounce back with say winning seven out of ten or perhaps 22-8 or so over the next 30, that will be fine.
It's not the one loss I am worried about. I'm not even that worried. But I could see this team going either way for the next block of games. It is a long season. I don't think Gerald Green is the answer. I think Brad needs to tinker with some of his coaching philosophies to fit player attributes or Danny needs to seal up the holes with a move or two.
I would have never played Larkin and Irving together. And I know how stupid I sound critiquing Brad Stevens. If I had to guess, Brad and Danny need to discuss this and come up with a new game plan. We are too close to stealing a title to just let it ride.
Stevens might just not have enough to work with and it would be a shame to not make that one or two moves that could set us up as more dangerous to Golden State.
It does appear that there are too many Jordan Mickeys/RJ Hunters for a true contender. Maybe if Hayward didn't get injured, this wouldn't matter. I know Danny can't simply snap his fingers and make something happen. And I promise to not complain too much if this turns into more adversity than one loss to a mediocre team.
It might have just been a bump in the road. It might have been a team slump that didn't generate a loss until yesterday.
I was a lurker, so I know you guys like to talk about glimmers. Yesterday provided some.

Phil,
I forgot about Bird. He could be that "break glass in case of emergency" scorer I'm looking for. Maybe. Not liking relying upon another rookie, though.

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
Bob, the two-way contracts are throwing me off. Yeah, I didn't include Kadeem Allen. Nader is probably next man up from the deep roster if Brad is throwing his hands up not knowing what to do.
Now I have to figure out two way contracts. I thought rosters were only 15 players. Would they be eligible for the playoffs? I will do some homework.
There's also an open roster spot.
I guess Danny has time unless the C's go into a tailspin. It would be ridiculous to waste this early great start.
One loss isn't panic time, but there's no need to wait for the trading deadline if the team needs reinforcements.
Ojeleye's ceiling this year is like rookie Avery Bradley. He might be a five minute defensive replacement.
If Larkin is a bust, that will hurt. Just saying.
I think Rozier will turn it around. I have no idea if Larkin is legit. He is very active on defense, but small. His shot looked good, then it didn't.
It looks like the next three games can be looked at as a set. It's home cooking tomorrow against Orlando, the next night at Indiana, back home Monday for the Pistons. Three games in four nights.
The Detroit game is actually the first of a five game homestand. People say it's a possession at a time, but I break that mold and try to make sense of the upcoming schedule.
How the NBA's new 2-way contracts work and why some agents are worried about them

Re: POST GAME MIAMI - AWAY
I see nothing on playoffs and assume they aren't allowed. It says they can stay up to 45 days.
That's the Jordan Mickey League. I doubt any of those guys can help. Yabusele hasn't. Semi is okay but not for a top team. Maybe in the future.
I think the winning streak will have Danny more prone to make moves. Maybe he can get lucky and find someone for a ten day contract.
I think Hayward will be back for the playoffs or there's a good chance if Danny doesn't use the injury exemption. Perhaps that is Capt. Obvious, but I haven't seen too many who think he will return.
They say let him take the whole year off and come back fresh. He'll be too rusty.
I say if we are close to the title, his coming back would be a huge emotional lift even if he didn't play much. Maybe he could be a strong 20 minutes off the bench and we beat Golden State. There will be a parade. We'll be thinking of not one, not two, not three championships....

The offense has definitely struggled. I like the idea of giving Bird some time on the floor. He can't be any worse than anyone else.
