Lebron to philly? Empty Lebron to philly?

Probably another bs rumor, but if true, philly could be pretty scary. I would almost prefer to see him go to LA...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/lebron-philly-rumors-suggest-sixers-173709758.html

Pretty much every NBA team could use LeBron James on its roster, so it's no surprise that the Cleveland Cavaliers star has a handful of serious suitors if and when he hits free agency this summer. According to a report this week from USA Today, rumor has it you can add the Philadelphia 76ers to the list of franchises that plan to pursue the All Star forward.

There were precious few details in the report, so take it with the proverbial grain of salt, but apparently there is real interest from the Sixers. "Executives around the league believe Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo will attempt to sign James," wrote the paper's Jeff Zillgitt.

Philly for years was a laughing stock in the league, losing games by the bucketful. But it developed a forward-thinking plan from former General Manager Sam Hinkie, who stockpiled draft picks to land young, cheap talent. The team has displayed incredible promise this season, led by rookie Ben Simmons and center Joel Embiid, both of whom look like they could be perennial all stars. Suddenly, Philly is an attractive destination and it's not totally crazy to see it as a landing spot for a star such as James.

James was just in Philly Monday to take on the Sixers and put on a clinic as the Cavs cruised to a 113-91 victory. He praised the organization before the matchup, telling reporters, "The [Sixers] organization has done a great job in believing in [Coach] Brett Brown’s system, believing in what he wanted to do, and they gave him some time.

It has long been rumored, however, that James is set to head to Los Angeles—where he has a home—to join the Lakers after this season. "I'm eradicating all conjecture and uncertainty!" wrote longtime NBA writer Peter Vecsey in September. "I'm comfortable now in stating unequivocally, LeBron will leave the Cavaliers a second time and join the Lakers, and return the team to L.A. Lore status."

It's also very possible James just stays in Cleveland. Still, James to Philly rumors have long been floated or debated in the City of Brotherly Love. Fans had signs pleading with him to join the Sixers Monday and some have noted that James has been a mentor to Simmons, who is signed to Klutch Sports, the agency run by LeBron's longtime friend and agent Rich Paul.

Zillgitt, of USA Today, argued this week that James would be smart to consider Philly, writing, "the Sixers are an intriguing possibility, and if James’ goal remains competing for championships and Cleveland is no longer the place, the Sixers can make a compelling case."

Philadelphia certainly does have a bevy of young talent to complement James, which could also extend the championship window for the 32-year-old player. It still seems unlikely he ends up in Philly, but it's interesting that rumors suggest the Sixers think they have a good enough argument to give it a shot.

Lebron to philly? Empty Re: Lebron to philly?

I am not sure that James would not sign in Philly.

He has never really shown any loyalty to any city, he does not need a LA or NY type city for his promotional monies, the 'ers have plenty of high level, young talent, they also have tons of money to spend without becoming a tax payer for a guy like James and probably still yet another very good player, have several quality draft picks still available to them without further tanking, and they play in the East (still weaker than the West, imo), etc.

All of the reasons listed above certainly would seem to get Lebron to his next title championship challenging situation faster than he would find as a Laker or signing back up with a much older Cleveland team. I do not think that many other higher level teams have enough money available to sign James.

Lebron to philly? Empty Re: Lebron to philly?

Philly has a young developing team and cap space. The problem to me is fit.

Ben Simmons is officially the point forward on Philly which is essentially the same position that Lebron plays. Take the ball away from Simmons and he becomes a non-factor. If he had an outside shot and could play off the ball then it could work. Anybody want to bet that Simmons will become a good outside shooter?

There are few teams that would have the cap space to add Lebron. LAL drafted Ball and again just like Philly he is not able to play off the "ball" so how does Lebron/Ball work?

I think LAL will probably end up with Paul George. The big 3 in OKC does not look like an ongoing concern.

LeBron probably stays in Cleveland if they can add another stud.

actually they would have to give up no one if he went to the team during free agency.
this coming summer there is a short list of teams King Lebum could sign with, this includes the Cadavers
so who at the moment could be possibly be playing the Lebum sweepstakes next summer?
these figures give us an idea.
teams with 10-20 million in cap space in the summer of '18:
kings
nets
suns
magic
Jazz

teams with 20,000,000.01- 30 million:
rockets

teams with over 30 million:
lakers
76ers
mavs
Hawks
bulls

barring some moves by other teams to get more cap or a sign and trade with the Cavs, HE Who Calls Hisself King really has only a few options.

The guy isn't likely looking for a huge pay cut, so of the teams that could afford him, which make sense? Philly, Lakers or staying at home look like the best options at this point. Where does he end up? As long as they don't wear kelly green on their jerseys I don't give a whelks chances in a supernova where he ends up.

Matty,

Yes, of course, but I was assuming it was a trade now for Cleveland to get value. I further my opinion in that Philly is a small market team. LA Lakers is his landing spot for many financial reasons including Hollywood and movies besides other advertising gigs.

Matty,

I would doubt that James would sign with any of the first group of teams you mentioned even if they had 40M in cap space because they are all years away from challenging even with Lebron on board.

For the same reason, he will not sign with the Mavs, Hawks or Bulls.

Good find on your part with Houston having a very decent amount to spend. He does not need to be the highest paid player in the league any longer (30M would be enough salary to join a playoff caliber team).

But, I think where he goes, if he does leave Cleveland, will come down to LA or Philly. He may make more off-the-court money in LA, but Philly is closer to being a championship contender.

I guess it comes down to money or wanting to win a championship again before he retires.
