SHOULD THE CELTICS GO AFTER DEANDRE JORDAN? Empty SHOULD THE CELTICS GO AFTER DEANDRE JORDAN?

Post by 112288 Tue Nov 28, 2017 11:34 pm

With the LA Clippers off to a very slow start and now faced with the loss for at least 2 months with a knee injury, whispers are abound that LA is about to break the team apart and start over.

It has been said that besides Griffin, the only other top asset is DeAndre Jordan. At 29 going on 30 and time left on his contract, should the Celtics make a run and get him as their true power center??????

Hi,
At what price? I don't think that Celtics have trade pieces that wouldn't break current core that showed so much potential.
I say NO.

The answer is no.

Jordan makes $22 mill this year and has a player option at $24 mill next year. The Celtics simply do not have cap space unless the deal involved trading away a big contract. The only player that would have to go is Al Horford and Boston would still have to take back another contract to make the salaries work.

Aside from the obvious, Jordan does not move the needle on the offensive end for Boston. He is a defensive player.

The Celtics will need to add a big at some point but it would not be in their long term interest to consider Jordan.

SHOULD THE CELTICS GO AFTER DEANDRE JORDAN? Empty Re: SHOULD THE CELTICS GO AFTER DEANDRE JORDAN?

I think sinus has a great point.  We have no more Brooklyn assets to dangle in front of someone, all we really have is the Laker/Sacto pick for this year or next, the Clippers' own 2019 #1 and Memphis' 2019 #1 pick.

Even with one or more of them, to get an All-League player like Jordan (1x All NBA First team, 2x All NBA Third Team, 2x All NBA Defensive First Team) we'd have to give up either Tatum or Brown and/or Hayward/Kyrie (probably get a pick back if it's Kyrie).

Do we really want to do that?  Do we really want to give up a young core player or two, or an All-Star and picks, for 29 year old Jordan?  One of the reasons (not the only reason) why IT got traded was because Kyrie is only 25 while IT is 29 and we wanted Jaylen and Jayson to grow up with players that they could build chemistry with over the years and into their prime.

If you look at Jordan's numbers this year you'll see his fg% and ppg are down.  That's how badly he needs a point guard that can run the pnr for him, he is almost useless with the ball in his own hands and creating his own shot.  That pretty much means that Kyrie cannot be part of the package.  That's also probably true of Hayward too, since he's a creator also.  His frito percentage is up to 62.5%.  Woohoo!!  Not.  How does Jordan would fit into today's pace-and-space NBA offenses?  He is a dinosaur.

I don't know how much this thread was initiated by the beatdown we got from Andre Drummond just 2 days ago, but even if we had DeAndre Jordan and Brad played him (as opposed to what he did with Baynes and Theis) we'd still have the same problem if we didn't change our strategy.  We'd still be not switching on the picks, their guys would still be curling into the paint after the pick and then it would be DeAndre Jordan who would have to step up to stop the penetration instead of Al Horford, and then the lob would still go over the top for the Drummond dunk.  Our problem wasn't Drummond, our problem was our pnr defensive schemes at the top of the key.

Jordan just does not seem to fit for the Cs at this time even though he is a good player. The Cs would just have to change far too much of their roster to get him.

I agree with everyone's comments.  This trade talk was initiated on ESPN on their late afternoon/early evening broadcast.

Would I like him if the price was right..............maybe and maybe not.  Poor free throw shooter and cannot space the floor by not having an outside shot.

My pick..........Okafor as a safe bet.   He'll come cheap and has great upside defensively if they work on his defense.  His ability to score inside helps space the floor better for Irving, Brown and Tatum.

On one note...........BOB I think you overvalued the assets needed for Jordan........I mean Irving / Haywood and or Tatum / Brown????

Jordan has 0 shot from 3 pt range, poor foul shot %.  His claim to fame is rebounding............................

A draft pick and a second unit guy would be the most I would offer.

112288,

The problem with trying to get Jordan for one second unit guy and whatever pick(s) it would take is that the Cs have absolutely no one who makes $22 M on their second unit to balance the money requirement that must happen in all NBA trades.

Even with the DPE there is not a Celtic second unit guy who could make the "money work" in a trade for Jordan'd $22 M.

I do not disagree with you regarding your thoughts of Jordan's worth in a trade with the Cs.

112288,

You may be 100% correct. I would hate to tear up a team that is 18-4 for one guy. If we were at 4-18 and completely under achievving it may be a different thought entirely

"We have no more Brooklyn assets to dangle in front of someone, all we really have is the Laker/Sacto pick for this year or next, the Clippers' own 2019 #1 and Memphis' 2019 #1 pick. "

Looking at 1st round draft picks over the next 3 years (2018, 2019 and 2020) the Celtics own their own picks = 3 with the potential to have 6 picks. They will definitely have 4 picks.

In 2018 we may have the LA pick but if not we would get the 2019 pick more favorable (either kings or Sixer - top 1 protected)

The Clippers first rounder is lottery protected for 2019 and 2020 = 5 potentially but this one looks like a longshot. If we do not get it in 19 or 20 we get a 2nd rounder in 2022.

Memphis pick 2019 1-8 and 2020 1-6 protected

The Clipper pick looks a bit iffy because the Clippers look like a team on the decline that is unlikely to fix their issues over the next 2-3 years. They look like a lottery team for a few years.

So we have 4-6 first rounders over the next 3 years. The Memphis pick is unprotected for 2021.

I think this still kepps Boston in a favorable situation to add more young talent. I do not think that Boston will be making any high profile trades involving any big salary players unless Al Horford is involved.

The time line for Boston looks really good over the next 5-7 years (Hayward, Tatum, Brown and Irving) Horford will be 34 when his contract expires.
The Celtics need to work on a replacement for AH in 2 years. The Celtics should be able to get to a championship with Al over the next 3 seasons including this year. Both Smart and Rozier fall into that 5-7 year timeline but I do not expect them to retain both of them.
