Thanks, bobheckler. I was thinking the #2 spot was the best because if three teams got lucky and jumped forward, Boston would still get the fifth pick. So #3 is the desired slot. Good to know.

Phil,
Having the #2 spot instead of #3 also increases the odds of LA getting lucky and landing the #1 pick, which locks us out.
Steve3344 told me last night that the majority of teams that had the worst record in the league on draft day, and were therefore the odds-on favorite to land the #1 pick, didn't get it. He didn't share his data with me, perhaps he will read this and post it. That might be interesting.

Re: Our Lakers Pick Lookin' Good
Is not the team with the worst record getting the #1 pick 25% of the time or is it that the team with the worst record gets 25% of the ping pong balls? In either case, that's another reason the Celts were so lucky last year.

This article, written in May, 2013 says, "The worst team has won the NBA Draft Lottery three times in 23 tries."
Since then, in June that year (2013) Orlando had the worst record and Cleveland won the lottery.
In 2014, the Bucks had the worst record and Cleveland won the lottery again.
In 2015, Minnesota had the worst record and actually won the lottery.
In 2016, Philly had the worst record and won the lottery.
In 2017, the Nets had the worst record, we owned their pick and won the lottery.
So amazingly, up until 2015 only three teams out of 25 that had the worst record won the lottery but now the worst team has won it three years in a row so it has now happened six times in 28 years that the team with the most ping pong balls got the top pick. That's 21.4% and falls in line with the 25% odds. But until 2015, 3 out of 25 was only 12% and way below what was expected.

Steve,
Thanks for the info.
There is also lottery reform coming, but won't be implemented until the 2019 draft. That will reduce the odds the 1-3 teams have of getting the #1 pick from 25% for the worst team to only 14% for the worst team.

Re: Our Lakers Pick Lookin' Good
So, now I am totally confused. What happens if LA gets the #1 pick ? We lose that pick completely? In other words we are rooting for LA to lose, but not be the worst
team? How the hell do you keep track of this?!!!!
As far as Ball is concerned, this kid has been put in a position where the pressure is too much. Daddy has alot to do with that. It is a shame to see a father have the kind of control over a family like he has. The kid will have to figure this out for himself.
We have been lucky, so far, that Tatum is proving that
Danny knows what he is doing. I am still trying to get over that game against Houston, how can one cocky superstar dare a ref to call the same call twice.
By the way, Smart is starting a class for anyone who wants to learn how he did that!!! All interested parties should join up!

Rosalie,
We get the Lakers' pick this year if it is #2, 3, 4 or 5. If it is #1 or #6, 7, etc we do not.
If we do not get the Lakers' pick this year then we get Sacramento's first round pick next year.

Sacramento or Philly's pick.
Which ever is favorable to the Celtics as long as it's not #1.

Lakers lose, Grizzlies win. The Lakers now have the 2nd worst record in the NBA, and an 80% chance of landing between 2 and 5 in the lottery... ...which means the Celtics now have an 80% chance of landing between 2 and 5 in the lottery. Happy New Year.

And now we get to sweat over every game for about 45 more games and hope it stays very close that. But things are exactly where we want them to be so far. Would be amazing to grab a pick in the #2-#5 range next year with all that talent coming out and Hayward coming back. That could bring us #18. Happy New Year everyone.

Re: Our Lakers Pick Lookin' Good
Hinkie probably wouldn't have made the trade. Philadelphia was stupid because Tatum seems to be better than Fultz anyway. Cleveland is also looking victimized for trading Kyrie to their closest competitor. Danny continues to get away with potentially lopsided trades.
Now that the team is where it should be with two near certain all-star prospects, Kyrie, Hayward and a couple more years of Horford, Ainge doesn't need to commit any more heists. He just needs to find the PJ Browns and James Poseys or younger versions of those guys.
All the Celtics truly need is for Golden State to drop down to earth a little to steal this year's title. The C's just have to stay healthy and maybe find one more big. Baynes and Horford are playing well lately. Theis is okay or a bit above average. Morris looked good today. I'd find one more big. Tatum and Brown can handle small forward. Rozier and Smart can eat a lot of minutes. Terry is really starting to produce. Smart looks healthy.
I'd even consider trading all draft picks. This one is too much of an unknown. The Boston draft picks should be traded. It's pointless to bring on projects if they can be consolidated into win now players. Projects seem easy to find.

It would be nice to end up with Ayton or Bagley to replace Hoford after a few years.

Re: Our Lakers Pick Lookin' Good
Ayton supposedly is going to go no 1, a David Robinson clone, that means Bagley or Bamba could fall into our lap. Going total old school, and I haven’t seen enough of both, but some, I see Bagley as a Willis Reed/Moses Malone type in our system and Bamba could be a modern version of Bill Russell on this team with all the pieces we have in place. Either pick would be great = DYNASTY

ESPN is now talking about the Lakers pick.
As usual this board is ahead of the curve. Way ahead of the curve. LAL are not very likely to win a lot of games even though they play hard and are competitive.
Danny Ainge saw this one coming.

Ainge could've offered the Lakers pick instead of the Brooklyn pick.
Early in the season only a few believed the Lakers pick was going to be in the top 2-5 range.
Now, even the experts from ESPN have taken notice.
