Who has the worst contract in the NBA? Empty Re: Who has the worst contract in the NBA?

biggest thing in that article for all fans to understand:

Especially with the league's salary cap, now at $99 million, projected to rise only incrementally over the next few years.

I've been saying this since last off-season. That BIG money for mid-level starters two years ago was only a ONE YEAR thing.

it started to change this past year and will continue in the near future.

Yes, TOP players will still get max deals.

But the amount of cap space most teams will have for the next levels players will continue to be less and less.

I think we will see even more players STAY with the team that has their rights , due to the fact that their current team can offer them the most money (going over the cap to do it).

and yes, Noah's deal is pretty bad.

But Mozgov's is equally bad....$32M over the two years AFTER this year.

Mahinmi- $31M after this year

but the WORST contract to me is:

Chandler Parsons.......two years after this one at over $49M

I would note all of thee deals were bad ones signed by GM's two year ago when the cap jumped , in what turned out to be a one year massive cap increase.

Two out of the 4 teams that signed those guys are now out of jobs, not surprisingly.

one last player I think will end up being a bad signing  is Otto Porter.

while he is a nice player and maybe one of the best 3 point shooters in the NBA now.

he has the 17th highest salary in the NBA right now. Overpaid to me, as I can't put him in the top 20 players in the NBA.

worst yet his deal has two more full years and an additional player option. I predict he WILL take that $28M  option in 2020, because he will likely not get anything near that anywhere else.

Between Wall, Beal and Porter and Mahinmi the Wizards have over $82M on salarys this year.

but wait it gets better...in 2019, they have over $107M in just those 4 players.

LMAO!!!

someone is likely to get fired by then.

This is why Phil Jackson can NEVER be mentioned in the same sentence with Red Auerbach as a 'basketball mind'

On the bench, Red was an outstanding coach, a great manager of personalities and situations and the greatest winner in the sport. When he stepped up to the front office, he continued his excellence.

Phil Jackson was an abject failure as a GM. Full stop.

Teams are likely to overpay somewhat if they believe they are a contender and one of their players   is on the market and they cannot replace that player.

The Celtics are over the Cap but under the penalty tax.  They will have to make a decision about Marcus Smart.  Danny chose not to extend him.  I thought they should have extended him if they really viewed him as a long term Celtic.

Now I am not so sure that Marcus will be retained and a lot of this has to do with the offer that he gets from other teams.  Marcus is a defensive players.  He is as bad on offense as he is good on defense.  How do the Celtics establish a price point in their minds for Marcus?

How do they contemplate having future 1st round picks that would be less costly over a 4-5 year span than giving Marcus a big raise?

Danny has a real challenge in front of him because of Kyrie.  He has one year locked in and then an option year where he is very likely to opt out.  He will command a super salary.

In order for the Celtics to keep a solid 6-7 man core of high end talent together, they will have to become a tax paying team.

yeppers...But I think dboss was pointing out that to retain those players the Celtics will become a taxpaying team.

If Smart walks for nothing, that will be painful. It will create a hole. And then what happens in a few years if Tatum and Brown become all-stars just in time for their second contracts? How deep into a luxury tax can a team go? Too bad Ainge can't just be George Steinbrenner and resign everyone for what it takes. Teams are penalized over the long-term for stockpiling talent.

Maybe this is why I am going all-in one season at a time starting now. The luxury tax could soon become Danny's true opponent. You never know who might not return.

I don't think guys like Smart and Baynes are easy to replace. It is worrisome, but who knows? It is the harsh reality of the business side of team building.

I would roll the dice and keep Smart no matter what and then worry about the money aspect later. I'd sign him for seven years at $15 million/year. I'd try to give him more years for less money as done with Jae Crowder. Rondo got a second deal like that. If Philly or other teams with cap space can't get LeBron, I could see them going after Smart.

Brooklyn might want to pilfer free agent Celtics. They must still be boiling inside over the trade.

Philly must hate our guts for coughing up a potential top draft pick to take Fultz over Tatum.

There's probably a lot of resentment around the league towards Danny's success. They have to be jealous and feel begrudged.

Smart is good enough where I think at least a few teams will try to entice him with big money.

Ugh, it feels like there's a good chance he'll just walk. He is Tim Wakefield for eating minutes. A great player on defense who is adequate on offense is still a very good player.

He was a #6 pick not chopped liver, however. If an "asset" just walks away, that is a loss any way one looks at it.

Thankfully it is not a problem for right now, although the trading season could influence play. The future speculation is interesting because anything could happen, but I hope players don't fret too much from inevitable rumors.

Someone had a post about a 7' 2" guy from Ukraine. Money might force Danny to just let Baynes walk and hopefully his luck continues filling in future holes.

Golden State over the next couple years will be interesting. How do they keep it together?

I've already started chewing fingernails for the next couple games. This is the best season since 2008.

If we are true contenders, ownership will go over the apron and pay the tax. I'm not worried about that at all. If team management think Smart helps us as a contender, he will be back. If some other team offers him crazy money, he most likely will be gone.

Every team has players that are overpaid and every team has players that are underpaid. It is just the nature of the beast. That being said, if a bad team hugely overpays a player or even has multiple overpaid players, that just spells DOOM.

i don't think you can sign players to 7 year deals.

I believe the max is 5 years now

Thanks, kdp59 and gyso. That pretty much sums it up.

It might be impossible to map out a ten year run. It could be use it or lose it. I'd love to see a post by someone predict what an NBA team is up against. What is the reality?

The C's have two monster contracts. Irving is the old big money. Right there is $80 million, soon to be $90+ million when Irving is redone.

I wonder if someone with Bezos or Bill Gates' money could buy a team and just pay for championships. Losing $100-200 million must mean nothing to them.

It seems the salary cap is set up where you can only have two or three superstars and then not much left over to fill in rosters. I suppose whatever Golden State does will give info to Danny. He can scout their moves over the next couple years.

This part of the game is intriguing. It is over my head. I didn't even know there are only five year contracts.

Gyso is correct. You start adding on Vincent Baker and Amar'e Stoudemire contracts, the future is doomed.

Smart is so good. I think he just gets the yips. It becomes psychological with his shooting.

Oklahoma doomed itself by not keeping Harden?

If Rozier doesn't get a bit more consistent, I don't see how Smart can be allowed to walk.

It's a good sign Danny/Brad are finding and developing cheaper contract guys like Theis and Semi. But Yabs and Nader look like crap shoots at best.

I think you at least have to overpay/match for Smart if that's what happens. Then trade him for lesser value, but at least the team doesn't get totally ripped off.

Yes, Smart is on a one year audition in real time. Maybe that is also hurting his jump shot. Evan Turner was a no-brainer to let walk. Smart's future in Boston seems much more difficult to predict.

There have always been "worst contracts" in all of sports, but Noah has to be one of the very worst.

I think that he may still be in the G League! Hope he is taking those boys out for steak after every game.
