Celtics rookie Daniel Theis broke his nose late in the first quarter of Friday's loss to the Utah Jazz but he accompanied the team on its flight to Memphis for the start of a brief two-game road trip.

Second-quarter struggles doom Celtics in 107-95 loss to Jazz

NBC SPORTS  BOSTON By A. Sherrod Blakely December 15, 2017 9:45 PM

BOSTON – It’s going to come. It always seems to come, sooner or later.

The run, whether it’s fueled by the Boston Celtics’ scoring or their defense, is on its way, right?

Not tonight.

After falling behind in the second quarter, the Celtics were never able to muster up enough plays at either end of the floor to regain control of the game, ultimately resulting in a 107-95 loss to the Utah Jazz.

The Celtics (24-7) still have the best record in the East, but they are trending in the wrong direction now with losses in two of their last three games and three of the last five.

Meanwhile, Utah (14-15) snapped a four-game losing streak in addition to nine straight defeats to the Celtics.

Kyrie Irving was brilliant again, scoring 33 points. Al Horford had a nice game for Boston with 21 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Other than those two, the Celtics didn’t get much production.

Meanwhile, the Jazz were led by Ricky Rubio’s 22 points. And rookie Donovan Mitchell had a near double-double with 17 points and nine assists with six rebounds. Rodney Hood provided a nice spark off the Jazz bench with 17 points.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, whose team was down 101-86 with about two minutes to play, sent four players – Shane Larkin, Abdel Nader, Guerschon Yabusele and Semi Ojeleye – to the scorer’s table, clearing looking ahead to Saturday’s game at Memphis.

Sluggish play through most of the second quarter put Boston in come-from-behind mode, which is a place they are familiar with this season.

But the third quarter burst they’re used to getting, just wasn’t there early on as Boston’s seven-point deficit to start the third soon ballooned to a 16-point hole that Boston struggled to climb their way out of.

Irving was scoring consistently once again, but he had very little help other than Horford.

And the Celtics’ defense was never able to slow down Utah’s red-hot shooters who finished the game connecting on 48.3 percent of their shots.

The usually reliable Jayson Tatum had a rough game, missing all four of his shots from the field through three quarters of play without a single point to his name. His first points didn’t come until a pair of free throws with 9:32 to play. He had seven points, but missed five of his six shots from the field.

After a relatively close first quarter which ended with the Celtics ahead 26-21, points were few and far between for both teams through most of the second quarter. Nearly eight minutes of the quarter was in the books and the Celtics only had two made field goals in the quarter, the second of which was made by Jaylen Brown which cut Utah’s lead to 35-32 with 4:06 to play.

Boston’s struggles in the quarter continued with the Jazz pulling ahead by as many as 10 points (46-36) after a 3-pointer by Hood.

However, Irving’s 3-pointer moments later would be the final points of the half which ended with Utah on top 46-39.

Celtics Wrap: Ricky Rubio Drops 22 Points, Jazz Rout Boston 107-95

NESN by Logan Mullen on Fri, Dec 15, 2017 at 9:56PM

For the second time in three games, the Boston Celtics put on an underwhelming performance and paid for it. The Utah Jazz came to TD Garden on Friday night in the midst of a four-game losing streak, but outplayed the Celtics and claimed the 107-95 victory. Boston struggled to contain Ricky Rubio, who put up 22 points, but he wasn’t alone as four additional Jazz players contributed at least 12 points. A horrid second quarter performance did the Celtics in, as they got outscored in the frame 25-13. Once Utah took the lead a little over six minutes into the quarter, they never gave it up, spending the rest of the game keeping the Celtics just far enough out of reach to prevent them from mounting a comeback. Kyrie Irving (33 points) and Al Horford (21 points) were the only Celtics in double figures. The Celtics were manipulated on the boards as well, losing the rebounding battle 46-29. The Jazz climbed to 14-15 with the win, while the Celtics fell to 24-7. Here’s how it all went down:

STARTING FIVE PG: Kyrie Irving SG: Jaylen Brown SF: Jayson Tatum PF: Al Horford C: Aron Baynes

HORFORD’S HOT START Al Horford hit a 3-pointer in the Celtics’ first trip down the floor, and the jumper proved to be a precursor of what was to come in the rest of the quarter. The Celtics big man opened up the floor with his offense, going 4-for-4 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers, while also dishing out four assists. His 10 points in the first were just a small portion of his contributions to the Celtics’ five point lead by the end of the period, as the Jazz visibly struggled to figure out how to play him. His resulting awareness allowed him to shoot freely, but also make quality passes to create opportunities for teammates.

CELTICS OFFENSE GOES QUIET After putting up 26 points in the first quarter, the Celtics were unable to establish much offense the next 12 minutes, beginning the quarter by posting just two points over the first 6:17. The C’s had no shortage of offensive opportunities, but each player on the court struggled to finish, be it when shooting from the perimeter or with their play in the paint. Such poor shooting drove the Celtics’ field goal percentage down to 35.7 by the time the half finished. In that time, the Jazz took over and cashed in on Boston’s woeful offense, putting up 25 points, taking a 46-39 lead into halftime.

JAZZ KEEP CELTICS AT BAY While there was nowhere to go but up following the Celtics’ brutal second quarter performance, there was noticable improvement on the other side of the half, with Boston putting up 28 points. The problem was, however, Utah answered with 33 of their own. Each time Boston put a good string of possessions together, it was met with a solid response from the Jazz, who managed to keep the Celtics at arms reach and extended their lead to 12 by the end of the quarter. The Celtics offense was rejuvenated, however, by Kyrie Irving beginning to come alive on the offensive end. The guard put up 16 points in the quarter after contributing 13 the entire first half.

UTAH SHUTS THE DOOR As the Celtics offense began to come alive in the third quarter, there was a looming feeling that if they could reciprocate on the defensive end, they presumably could regain the lead. No such fortune. The two sides broke even in the final period, each putting up 28 points. At no point did the Celtics ever seem to put themselves in a place where they could begin to forge a comeback. By the time the game was within the final four minutes, it was clear the Jazz were not going to lose control of the lead.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME If he keeps this up, we’re going to have to just turn this section into the “Jaylen Brown Highlight of the Game.”

UP NEXT The Celtics will play the second game of their back-to-back on the road in Memphis tomorrow against the Grizzlies.

Out-rebounded 55 - 29.

Only 2 offensive boards.

Jerebko of all people comes back to haunt his old team.

Rubio and Irving pretty much battle to a draw overall, but Rubio owns the first half and helps forge the lead.

How about Mitchell and Hood?

Ah well. On to tomorrow night at the Griz.

The Celtics have fallen into playing spurt basketball.......good for a quarter or half a quarter ............then they go missing for long stretches.

Very inconsistent !!!!!

The question is who or what is causing this????????

Perhaps teams have figured out how to defend them!

Thank God they had that streak as they are tending below 500 for the last 5 games.

What were the odds that Jonas Jerebko was going to outscore Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined (17-13)?  Pretty long I'd imagine.

NYCelt,

You beat me to the punch in mentioning the negative 26 in team rebounds last night. The Jazz had 6 guys with more rebounds than out top rebounder (Horford). OUCH!

Our rebounding issues from last year are beginning to appear again even after such a great start
in rebounding this season.

Rebounding is so much a mental mind set controlled stat, and for some reason we are losing it.

Does not surprise me one bit that our chances of winning are greatly influenced by our rebounding as losing more often when you are rebounding less always has been part of basketball at every level.

We were a finely tuned machine, but lately we have been missing a cylinder or two each game. Discontinuity is not our friend.

Next man up can work in the short term, but lately it is hurting us. Once we got behind in the second quarter, we couldn't string together a run to get it back.

We are in a downward cycle, a lot of ups and downs in a season, this is one of them. When the 2 J's are very off, we're in trouble, they are our sparkplugs, when they do well, we do well. Didn't help that Smart reverted to bad Marcus, who can't buy a shot and makes a good defensive play then runs the floor and bricks a bunny, remember that guy? Rozier thinks he'll be a starter, on what shitty team? He's about to lose playing time to Larkin, who has earned it by being much better recently....Rozier is not a starter in this league, he's an athletic tweener that can't run an offense or score/hit shots consistently enough. I'd easily take Kris Dunn over him in a second.

Our defense and rebounding have been off as of late, teams can go at/post up Tatum as he's talented, but only 205 pounds, teams are figuring out our defense. Our perimeter defense, so intense earlier, seems to have dropped off and teams are also faking outside shots and driving on us a lot more....something we're actually very good at in our offense. Well Stevens has some new stuff hes got to work on, obviously not having Hayward and Morris is being felt. We don't have a player that avgs even 8 rebounds a game, historically contending playoff teams, except GS always have at least one double digit board eater.

Celtics play started going downhill with about 5 games left in the initial streak. They haven't played as well since. Part of the downturn came from trying to incorporate Morris into the rotation. Another part of the downturn is that our most played rookies are hitting a wall.

After a quick start the Celtics have hit a speedbump and its thrown them a little off. These things are part of the ebb and flow of the game and season. A measure of just how good Brad is will be how long will it be before they start playing the right way again.

Only three Celtics had double digit shot attempts. One of them was Smart. (3-13) This is indicative of stagnant ball movement and not running plays for specific people and situations. The C's are lacking balance in terms of iso play, two man game, and the preferred space with pace ball and player movement. All of these are important parts of a balanced attack. 29% from 3 and 40% from the floor just won't get too many wins.

So my estimate of 60 win season was highly criticized by some. Well i’d take 60 right now in a heartbeat.  We spent the better part off last month as perhaps overachievers.  Work in progress.

We are bound to have underachieving stretches too.

Good enough to beat anyone and not so good that we can beat everyone.

Let go 1-0 starting tonight.

The good thing about basketball is the time between games.  The Celtics play Memphis tonight.  A new challenge comes pretty quickly.

As I was watching this game I was thinking that it was strange because multiple players sustained injury to various parts of their head and face areas.  And we saw the Eiffel Tower get toppled.

The Celtics were never able to get any sort of rhythm on offense or on defense.  The rebounding disparity reflected factors including poor positioning and also fewer rebounding opportunities for us.  The Jazz shot the lights out in all 3 areas.  At the same time the Celtics shot the ball very poorly all night including 9-31 from deep or 29% and 35-86 overall for 40.7%.

Did you see what Utah did?  they were 14-18 from deep 77.8% and a very efficient overall 40-83 or 48.2%.  Not a lot of rebounds on either glass when they shoot well and the Celtics shoot poorly.

When Theis became another casualty of war I was sick because our core of bigs does not lend itself to a next man up option.

Our pups did not have a productive night on offense.  Our rookie went 0-4 before he made his way back to the bench in the first QTR and Jaylen went 3-8 but he did have 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks which reflected some defensive intensity.

Irving and Horford carried the team on offense all night.

But lets get to the heart of the problem.  The Celtics bench is unreliable on offense.  Larkin was the only bright spot as he gave hope to the cause but both Rozier and Marcus were dreadful.  No one will ever accuse Marcus of not playing hard.  His energy is needed and he has an abundance to give.  The problem is that he will make a steal or get a rebound at one end and turn it into a missed floater at the other.  When he makes a shot, you can hear snowflakes.  I have reached a point where I dread those possessions where he is the only one who is going to take the shot.

I do not want him to shoot because I do not want him to miss.  Marcus is our 6th man who plays starter minutes.  He is a leader on this team and no one can fault his effort.  But the Celtics need offensive production from him and they are not going to get that.

We are now 31 games into the season and the impact of missed games to key players is starting to impact the team's ability to win.  The defense has been slipping as evidenced by our last 4 losses (given up 118, 105, 108 and 107)

The Celtics have an open roster spot and the DPE.  They probably need to add a player.  Some are calling for a big but I think we need a shooter/scorer for the bench.  If that player happens to also be a big then great.  The problem is that there are no free agents out there that fit what we need and therefore only a trade could bring what it is that we need.  Danny however is not looking to take on a long term contract.  The player would have to fit into the timeline with a favorable contract.

That is a lot to ask for and may help us understand the difficulty of getting another piece.  This is still considered a transitional year so the final results must be considered from that point of view.  If the Celtics do nothing then fans must accept that with an eye to the future.

Looking forward to the Memphis game tonight.  It's on to Memphis!

This is the first time this year I am seriously starting to question if this team will go deep into the playoffs.  Yeah, I know this is a bit of an overreaction but we are talking about two BAD games against two BAD teams this week, and in both cases I saw a lack of effort and complete offensive incompetence by the bench.  We will probably correct the effort part in the playoffs, but the bench?  Not good.

We lost to a sub .500 team playing with no starting front court players.  Rudy Gobert played 2 minutes and Derrick Favors played 12.  And they whupped us.   Bad.  We lost Theis, and that's just not the same, not even close.  They went small ball because they had no choice.  We went small ball because...?

Tatum has hit the rookie wall.  Another awful game by him.

Jaylen Brown neither dominated rookie Donovan Mitchell, admittedly a difficult task, nor did he stop him.

Ricky Rubio had a great game, shooting 10-15, because Kyrie Irving's defense has reverted to Kyrie Irving's defense and not what we saw and watched in amazement and joy in the first dozen games of the season.  All that hard work and physicality to stay between his man and the basket turned into nothing more than a passing phase.  Someone needs to buy Kyrie a cape, not because he's Superman but because he's become a matador who sidesteps the bull and pulls the cape away in a "And you thought I was going to be standing behind the cape in front of you, huh?  Ha!" moment.

Marcus Smart's offense has reverted to Marcus Smart's offense.  3-13.  He was 0-6 at halftime.  I don't think he realizes he's the worst shooter on the team.  That's why, when others are struggling hitting their shots he thinks it's up to him to shoot.  He was 0-3 from 3, which means he was 3-10 from 2.  Think about that.  Marcus Smart shot 30% from two-point land.  If he wore mittens he couldn't shoot worse.  If he held kittens while wearing mittens he couldn't shoot worse.  I'm going to stop now before I launch into some dark frustration-fueled Dr. Seuss/Mr. Hyde tirade but you get my gist.

Sadly, he wasn't alone.  Rozier was 0-4, with at least two of his shots being wild, off-balance shots at the rim.

The bench was 7-16 WITHOUT Smart and Rozier.  With them they were 10-33.  I used to go off on Kobe when he turned into KoME and took 25 fgas and only hit 8 of them.  Well, Smart and Rozier together were a combined 3-17 in 51 minutes.  That's worse than KoME ever did.

In fact, Celtics not named Irving and Horford shot a combined 26%.

No Gobert, no Favors and Brad plays Baynes 16 minutes.  We have an advantage in size and Brad decides to match them small.

No Morris, no bench offense.  No bench offense, no chance in the playoffs.  Maybe we could trade Rozier for Hood?  Hood isn't a high percentage shooter neither, although he is better than Rozier, but he is at least capable of going on a hot streak.

We had the best Win-Loss record in the league.  Now we're 3rd and Cleveland is just one game behind us in the loss column, IT is coming back, and we're playing like shit against Chicago and Utah.

Theis got his nose broken, but is traveling with the team today to Memphis.  Maybe, if Marc Gasol stubs his toe neither he nor Horford nor Baynes will have to take off their warmups.

Wow can’t argue with those stats bob, it’s confirmed what my eye test has seen the last 2 weeeks, now that teams have figured out how to attack our weaknesses, do we have the depth or experience to counter? Stevens is gonna find out which players he can rely on long term and which players have ability to adapt and expand their games.

I had no problem with a 60 win prediction when that kind of conversation was on fire. The Celtics had seemingly come out fine after the streak ended. 40-18 seems to be the record needed at that point to hit 60 wins.

I could have sworn Beat was calling for 55 wins and 60 became the consensus after averaging out pragmatic and confident views.

Morris going down hurts a lot. He had been shifted to the bench and was giving it a lift.

Danny does need to do something or this is the new reality.

Only 14 roster spots have been filled the whole time. It is really down to 13 because Hayward is out.

Semi has been a piss poor option at the end of the rotation, but there has been no other alternative. Yabusele and Nader do not seem to be realistic options for rotation minutes.

All of a sudden Brad is down to about nine or ten guys he can count on for a decent rotation. I won't mention the two-way guys because they at best are in the Yabusele/Nader tier. Theis got damaged. Smart and Rozier continue to slide. Tatum and Brown have had some off games, and all of a sudden this is not that great a team in this moment.

Larkin has been shooting well, but he is not a point guard. The biggest current issue is lack of consistent ball movement. Smart is basically falling apart for offense. Instead of shooting 3-13, he could have shot 2-6 leaving 8 potential assists.

The Celtics were still in this game until Brad went hardcore small ball. Baynes yet again got limited minutes.

Rozier has been miserable as a player since great play the first set of games.

For all the bad vibes from the Chicago and Utah losses, I am not too worried or upset. I need to see quite a number more of bad losses before hitting the panic button.

I liked the Smart in the Denver game with his nine assists and one turnover. That Marcus was around for a little bit in the second half last night.

Irving has not shown that he is any better than Marcus Smart as a point guard distributor?

Horford yet again got it done for this category. Add another seven assists with no turnovers.

Danny did not look happy in the stands, but he always has on a Belichick game face?

I think things will either work themselves out or I wouldn't be surprised if Smart plus some draft picks are traded before the deadline. I am rooting hard for him each game because he is essential for how the roster currently lines up. But if he can't contain his inner Antoine Walker, he seems to be pushing his way out of town.

Danny traded Rondo, Isaiah and Bradley in the same scenarios. Even before Danny blew up the roster this past off-season, the trend was that he traded good assets before getting stuck in sign or let them walk situations.

I doubt Danny will let a #6 pick walk for nothing. There's always the chance Smart's lousy offense has dropped his asking price and he returns with a humble contract.

Smart needs to be more of an Evan Turner/Phil Pressey spark plug for offense. He has the ability. It makes no sense why he keeps shooting so much.

I'm not happy with Brad's leaning on small ball, but I see that the roster has always been depleted (Hayward/no 15th contract) and vulnerable. Now with Morris banged up with a mystery injury, that vulnerability has become very dangerous.

Tatum is sort of skinny to rely on too much for power forward defense.

I'd make a trade or two if I was Danny, but I accept he can't just snap his fingers and has to consider long-term dynamics when doing so. And that is why I believe the heart of all the recent drama centers around Marcus Smart and will continue to do so. He and Baynes are next up for deciding if they stay or go.

Playing Irving as if he is Kobe Bryant will turn the C's into a 45-50 win team, not 60-65 as it seemed to be headed.

I'm somehow still not worried. The recent play is disappointing, but no one can predict the future.

Some of these losses can be good. They can prevent complacency and feelings of entitlement.

Predicting the future in sports can be quite hazardous - especially when a team is perceived to be either overachieving or underachieving. Thus far this year I have viewed the Celtics as a team that has overachieved and I want another 30 or 35 games played before I venture an opinion - That's the effect of what the ups and downs of a long season can have on any of my attempts to arrive at a logical prediction. Lets see how things look in March.

I refuse to start thinking that this team is overrated. But I do feel a couple of things:

1. Marcus Smart has terrible shooting form that has not been fixed by now and possibly never will be.

2. Terry Rozier is one of the most inconsistent of the bench player all around. This is the guy who said he would be a starting guard in the league and I asked if he thought he could oust Kyrie and everyone jumped on me. This kid, when he is on, can be so damn good, but when he is bad, he is awful.

3. I know Jaylen had three fouls in the first half, but his playing time was sporadic last night. I think he could have been of more help offensively if he was on the floor.

4. Jason Tatum has hit the rookie wall, here's hoping he hops the fence and picks up where he left off.

5. WE MISS MORRIS

6.. Danny will definitely make a move shortly. but will be patient.

I will be patient Danny, I promise. BUT....please do something to jump start this team.
