Feb. 1 updates

1:21 p.m. ET: The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to trade center Omer Asik, guards Tony Allen and Jameer Nelson and a protected 2018 first-round pick to the Chicago Bulls for forward Nikola Mirotic, a second-round pick and the rights to trade second-round picks in the 2021 draft, league sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Bulls are expected to waive Allen and Nelson, the sources said. New Orleans agreed to guarantee Mirotic's $12.5 million option in the 2018-19 season, clinching the deal.

Interesting on releasing Tony Allan.......could he be a short term fix to losing Smarts defense if traded?

New: Per league sources, Celtics willing to pursue Tyreke Evans if price is right, but Lou Williams less likely to fit plans. Buyout market remains most likely course for Cs:

bob
MY NOTE:  If/when we sign Monroe we will have 15 players on the roster.  The only way we add Tyreke Evans or anybody else is by trading someone for no player in return or we just cut someone, buy them out.

more likely someone gets traded.

Just throwing this out there and combining a couple of so called rumors.

how about Smart and Baynes for Lou Williams?

Smart is a RFA next year and Baynes and Williams are both UFA's.

then sign T. Allen to a vet minimum deal.

roster would then be:

Horford
Monroe- UFA next year
Morris
Theis
Yabusele
Tatum
Semi
Brown
Nader
Irving
L. Williams- UFA next year
Rozier
T. Allen- UFA next year
Larkin- UFA next year

Haywards spot

Pretty strong roster for going deep in the playoffs this year and also set up for the off season as well, with Monroe and Williams being the only FA's of note we need to resign (or replace).

ESPN Feb. 5 updates

6:36p.m. ET: The Brooklyn Nets have agreed to trade center Tyler Zeller to the Milwaukee Bucks for guard Rashad Vaughn and a protected 2018 second-round pick, league sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Zeller gives the Bucks a solid backup center for the playoff push. The deal gives the Nets a chance to further replenish their future pool of draft picks.

Wojnarowski: Celtics one of four teams staying engaged with Tyreke Evans

ESPN

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics are one of four teams going after Tyreke Evans.

“Three front runners (Boston, Denver and Philadelphia) and a fourth team (Miami) staying engaged on Memphis' Tyreke Evans, league sources tell ESPN,” Wojnarowski tweeted on Tuesday.

It was reported last week the Grizzlies plan to sit the guard until the NBA trade deadline, which is Thursday at 3 p.m.

Baynes stays. He gives you muscle and if the game gets chippy........can assume fouls while keeping Horford and others from foul trouble. Plus he is an insurance against injury to our other bigs.

MY NOTE: What's really amazing about this is the Knicks doing this trade AFTER Porzingis is down with an ACL. Setting aside the "we're tanking the rest of this year" aspect to it Hernangomez is a cheap asset that can play minutes for years. Oh, wait a second, I forgot. It's the Knicks...

The Grizz are holding out for a first round pick. Also interesting comment about Miami ready to part ways with Winslow. To think, Brown and Tatum may not even be on the roster if Michael Jordan was a smart owner in evaluating players.

I’m surprised he been such a bust, he’s a Marcus Smart clone, terrible offense, very good defender, but so injury prone.

NBA Trade Deadline: Pistons reportedly trade for Jameer Nelson to bolster point guard rotation

By: Jared Weiss | 7 minutes ago

The Detroit Pistons are trading for former Boston Celtics point guard Jameer Nelson to bolster their rotation ahead of a playoff run, reports Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania.

It’s NBA trade deadline day and we finally have our first deal of the day being reported, as the Detroit Pistons will acquire Jameer Nelson from the Chicago Bulls for suspended center Willie Reed according to Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania.

Shams also reports the two teams will swap second-rounders in 2022. It’s actually pretty hard to project who will be the better team by then.

Nelson averaged just over five points per game backing up Jrue Holiday in New Orleans before he was replaced by DeAndre Liggins and then shipped to Chicago in the Nikola Mirotic trade. He is a shell of the player who was briefly in Boston a few years ago, who was already a shell of the player who started for the Dwight Howard Orlando Magic teams that battled the Big Three Celtics a decade ago.

This has a small ripple effect for the Celtics, as Detroit has been making a clear run at the playoffs after trading for Blake Griffin. They are currently tied with the Philadelphia 76ers for the eight seed and whomever wins that race will face Boston in the first-round of the playoffs based on the current standings.

The Celtics have spent nearly the entire season in first place in the Eastern Conference, although the blowout loss to the Raptors Tuesday now has their lead over Toronto down to one game. With the Cavs sitting in third place 7.5 games behind Boston, they would need to fall off a cliff in the last two months of the year to fall past second place.

Just four games separate the third and ninth seeds in the East right now, so there is plenty of room for movement up and down the playoff seeding for Detroit.

Cleveland is in a desperate state. They are doing everything to keep Lebron there. They just gave up the Brooklyn pick (protected) No sure of the details. The Lakers do not care if they win this year and should be a worse team the rest of the way.

How does this impact Boston? Cleveland probably is a tick better with Clarkston and Nance. Will Boston counter by adding Evans? This also means the LAL pick is probably back in play. A really bad defensive team just got worse. IT is being tossed around like a second hand rag doll. Frye is well past his expiration date.

Re: TRADE DAY POSTS

Post by 112288 on Thu Feb 08, 2018 1:14 pm

The Isaiah Thomas experiment is over in Cleveland, and the Los Angeles Lakers have freed up cap space to go after LeBron James and Paul George.

Hours before Thursday's 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, the Cavaliers traded the point guard and forward Channing Frye to the Lakers for guard Jordan Clarkson and forward Larry Nance Jr.

The Lakers also get the Cavaliers' protected first-round pick in 2018.

The Lakers have been trying for months to clear future salaries to go after James, if he opts out of his contract, and George in free agency this summer. Getting the first-round pick gives the Lakers another asset to use to clear additional salary in the future.

Both Thomas ($6.3 million) and Frye ($7.4 million) are on expiring contracts. The Lakers now project to have $46.9 million in cap room this summer. The cap space will increase to $69 million if they do not bring back Julius Randle and stretch the $37 million owed to Luol Deng over five years.

Clarkson is under contract through 2019-20, and Nance's deal runs through 2018-19. But Cleveland picks up luxury tax relief with this trade this season.

Thomas was acquired from the Celtics in August in the bigger deal for Kyrie Irving, who had said he wanted out of Cleveland.

Thomas was rehabbing from a hip injury and ended up playing only 15 games for the Cavs. He averaged 14.7 points, but Cleveland went 7-8 in those games.

"He's worked too hard to get back, and he's a ball-dominant player," said Thomas' agent, Aaron Goodwin. "It's LeBron's ball, and this clearly wasn't working. [Cavs GM] Koby [Altman] and I have had enough conversations where it was clear, with the way the system was going, it wasn't beneficial for either party. This is a good opportunity for Isaiah."

The trade makes the Cavaliers younger, as both players they are getting are 25 years old.

Clarkson averages 14.5 points per game on 45 percent shooting. He had been the Lakers' sixth man, providing instant offense off the bench for much of the season.

Clarkson averaged 21.2 points over an eight-game tear before scoring seven points in the Lakers' win over Phoenix on Tuesday. He leads the NBA with 274 points off the bench since Jan. 1, just ahead of the Clippers' Lou Williams (270) over that span, according to NBA Advanced Stats. Over the season, only Williams (813) has more bench points than Clarkson (732).

Nance averages 8.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. His father had an illustrious career with the Cavaliers.

After three straight Finals appearances and a title in 2016, the Cavs are currently third in the East.

Thomas said this week that he was sick of being traded and wanted to stay with Cleveland.

The Cavaliers visit the Lakers on Sunday, March 11 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).

A very dramatics day for the Cavs.

They traded 2 PG's (IT and Rose replacing them with Clarkston and Hill) They rid themselves of PF Frye and replaced him with Nance (a young athletics defender) They moved SF Crowder and replaced him with Hood.

Looks to me like Cleveland has upgraded their team. With this many changes to the roster Lou will have his work cut out for him in figuring out how to integrate all these players into the team.

Interestingly, almost every Celtic that was traded or released by Danny during the last off-season has been traded from that team to another.

Bradley from Detroit to LAC
IT from Cleveland to the Lakers
Crowder from Cleveland to Utah
Zeller released by Celtics, signed with Brooklyn and traded to Milwaukee

Only Kelly Olynyk, released by Celtics and signed with Miami, is still with that team (but the trade deadline is still 1 1/2 hours away, so stay tuned).

Kinda makes you think that those players looked as good a trade target as they did is because of Brad Stevens and the Celtic organization, doesn't it?
