The organizational significance of Paul Pierce’s jersey retirement wasn’t lost on Gordon Hayward. It’s one of the reasons he opted to join the Boston Celtics.

Gordon Hayward’s summer decision to join the Boston Celtics feels like a bit of a distant memory. A lot has transpired since then.

Hayward sustained a gruesome injury just five minutes into the regular season. The Celtics showed remarkable resilience in the face of his loss, and now find themselves, somewhat improbably, in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Hayward has kept a low profile through it all, but he was on hand for Paul Pierce’s jersey retirement ceremony on Sunday night, an event he described as emblematic of the reasons he was keen on joining Boston over the offseason.

“It’s one of the reasons I chose to come to Boston, the tradition,” Hayward said, per NBC Sports’ A. Sherrod Blakely. “The success, the excellence they’ve always had. The teams he has been on has been a part of…I wanted to be part of that success and make some myself.”

Hayward will be following in Pierce’s footsteps in that regard, a path he’ll walk with respect and admiration.

“He’s a guy that as a young player in this league, I looked up to because of the skill he possessed and a guy that wasn’t the most athletic person but could get anywhere he wanted to on the floor, get his shot off anytime,” Hayward said of Pierce. “Just somebody that meant a lot to me.”

Hayward has a long way to go before returning to the court and attempting to use his connection to Pierce as a motivator in his on story, but he’s already starting to feel the weight of what it means to be an All-Star caliber player for the Celtics.

“You feel a little bit of responsibility on your shoulders,” Hayward admitted. “It’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here, to have some of that responsibility to continue that success.”
