Gary Washburn @GwashburnGlobe
J.R. Smith: "No, I knew it was tied. I thought we were going to take a timeout because I got the rebound. I’m pretty sure everybody didn’t think I was going to shoot it over KD right there. If I thought we were ahead, I would have just held on to the ball and let them foul me.”

bob
MY NOTE:  Then why didn't he call a timeout?  Sounds like a bullshit post-game explanation to a brain dead play.

This is the replay rule on the block/charge. It can only be triggered to check if the defender was in the restricted area, to which then the officials can review the actual call, and in the final two minutes:

bob
MY NOTE: It would appear that the call should not have been reversed, since he clearly was outside the restricted area. HOWEVER, it was also clearly a charge. LeBron was still sliding left. What a black eye for the refs.

I don't understand what JR Smith is doing on an NBA team. He is an idiot too often who absolutely cost the Cavs game 1. There aren't too many players I viscerally dislike. He is one of them.

worcester,

What is truly unlikeable, to me, about JR Smith is that he likes to act all "thug-like" but he's actually a product of a middle-class family in the very nice county of Monmouth County, NJ. His hometown's population, according to the 2000 Census, was 2128 people and is less than 30 miles from the beach at Asbury Park. San Carlos, where I live, is one of the smallest cities in the bay area and our population is just under 30,000. He went to a prep school, for Pete's Sake. He's one of LeBron's Secret NBA Wine Society members, and you know they don't drink Thunderbird.

Hi,
It's kind of funny. Seconds after JR's dumb play the announcers said that someone lip-read what he said: "...I thought we're ahead..."
But since we're dealing with a head-case what else do you expect...

I watched that play over and over, LeBron definitely blocked Durant as far as I could tell. He moved right into him. But, it was a tough call to make at that point of the game.

Gotta give it to the King, he had one heck of a game. But when you surround yourself with a bunch of nothings, it is very hard to win. How much more can he do?

I have disliked JR Smith for years. He just does not put his heart into playing a game at that level. what a loser

Still anyone's series , you just don't know what will happen. Sometimes GSW does not look as unbeatable as last year.

Refs missed lane violation by Draymond Green on George Hill's free throw.

I'm surprised how poorly the Cavs' midseason acquisitions Clarkson, Hood, Nance and Hill have performed. The first couple of games after they did the deal it looked like a major shot it the arm for them by adding youth and athleticism. Now, not so much. And the blame will be directed at Gilbert.

To what purpose do these reports serve? They undermine the ref's and make it seem like the Warriors stole the game. If they want to point out mistakes start from the beginning. How many calls were missed during the gajme? How many fouls on the 'Cavs part were missed. This report is ridiicuous

Rosalie,

I agree. What makes a blown call in the last 2 minutes more important than a blown call in the prior 46 minutes? We have discussed this many times on this board. What it gives many people is some kind of reason to complain that a potential win by their team was stolen by the refs and that is a totally false narrative.

If you want to win a game, just play harder earlier and remove the possibility that any end of game calls by the refs will effect the outcome.

This is one of those, check a box things - so fans asked for more transparency and the commissioner can point to this and say CHECK. The fact that it just makes the refs look bad and pisses everyone off, seems to be beside the point.

I would rather have a published ref SCORE after each game - with trackable running totals, and in each round - the rankings are published and refs assigned accordingly. A ref has a low score in terms of missed calls in round one, he/she gets an early vacation.

Every time I see Marc Davis, Tony Brothers or Scott Foster - I know they are going to miss a ton of calls, refuse to engage in any discussion with players and just generally be jerks. How those guys end up on top of the list of worst refs, year after year yet still call games in the finals is beyond me.

Kleen,

Your Gang of Three are demonstrative in their manner and create controversy.  They induce clicks on the internet and thus, provide money for the league.

Money vs. Quality?  Money wins every time and the fans lose out.  Rolling Eyes

I like your suggestion of a ref score.  With technology today and the money available, it would be so easy.

Those three referees that you mentioned are the worst ref's on the floor during a game. Funny, I used to despise the way Joe Crawford took over a game and made it all about him.
These three are the same way. Tony Brothers has an awful record agains the Celtics.

If the NBA wants to clean up the game, retire those guys, it is obviouss they are over the hill
