Going Walkabout Again

Post by bobheckler on Mon Jun 11, 2018 11:22 am

The screaming from the season's over and the wild geese's voices are being heard again. I'm leaving Wednesday for Points Distant. While I'm gone I probably won't be posting much, nor initiating threads (I'm traveling with a cell phone and a Kindle, for electronics, and copy-and-pasting with them is tedious and awkward).

I will be reading the board however, and look forward to reading the threads and the opinions voiced on them.

Peace and, soon, out.

Hey my friend, travel safe and have a wonderful time. You deserve a break from all this Celtic stuff. Perfect timing, before draft and free agency when everyone will go nuts about signing this one or trading that one.

It will be here when you return. We will miss your daily posts. Life goes on.

Be well

Please share your adventure with us, I'm sure it will keep us entertained.

After about 30 hours in airports, not including check in and security and customs, I'm finally in Johannesburg.

It has been a while since I've driven a right-side steering wheel stickshift car on the left side of the road. Every time I try to signal a turn the wipers come on. If I don't kill myself in the next 24-48 hours I should be ok.

Currently in the Kingdom of Lesotho.  Downtown is nice, clean, well-maintained but out of town is very 3rd world.  Am in a 3-star hotel that is nicer than a 4-star Worcester and I stayed in in Baiona, Spain.  This place is so modern the wall outlets have usb ports you can plug directly into to charge your electronics.

I might spend another day here or not.  Next stop will be the Drakensberg Mountains and then the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift.  The move "Zulu!" is about Rorkees Drift.  140 British soldiers and 11 colonial troops held off 3000-4000 Zulus.  It came just days after the Zulus destroyed the Brits at Isandlwana, where 20,000 Zulus attacked 1800 Brits, killing 1300 out of 1800 while only losing between 1000-2500 Zulus.  Most Victoria Crosses awarded to a single regiment for a single action is history.  11 VC out of 140 troops.
