Report: 'Several teams' inquire about a sign-and-trade for Smart

NBC Sports BostonJuly 11, 2018, 7:51 PM MDT

A sign-and-trade deal with the Celtics for Marcus Smart?

Several teams have inquired about it - including the Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets - according to Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz.

Source: Several teams - inc the #Grizzlies and #Nets - have inquired about a S-T w/the #Celtics for RFA Marcus Smart, who has already met with Brooklyn. Source also says that Boston has had zero communication or contact w/Smart.

6:09 PM - Jul 11, 2018

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told reporters at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas that signing the restricted free agent guard is a "priority" this summer. Smart has met with at least four teams - none of which are the Celtics - the past two days, according to a Boston Globe report. Two of those interested teams are reportedly the Nets and Sacramento Kings. Smart's agent said he was hurt by the lack of attention being shown to him by the Celtics, who can match any offer he gets.

It's possible Smart could sign the Celtics' $6.1 million qualifying offer or a more lucrative one-year deal from Boston before hitting the unrestricted free-agent market next summer. Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald reported Tuesday that Smart would "consider" accepting the Celtics' offer from last October, which would be worth more annually than the three-year, $33 million deal recently signed by Jazz guard Dante Exum.

MY Note: Do either of those teams have anybody we want? I'm not eager to trade Smart but another Memphis 1st rounder would be nice.

I don't see how a trade with either would work

This sounds like another opportunity for Danny to add another draft pick.

This also points to the reality that teams are concerned about the CAP.

Boston is not likely to absord a bad contract but perhaps they get a low cost non guaranteed scrub and a pick. The Nets should be afraid to make deals with Danny.

I would trade Lavert for Smart even up in a heartbeat.

It is impossible to contemplate who the Celtics might want until we know how much Smart will make.  He would like a multiyear contract if he is traded otherwise he might as well sign his QO and become an UFA in 2019.

For the sake of this argument let's say he wants a contract like Dante Exum.  3 years @ $11 mill per.  Boston would have to take back salary to make that work.  It may be more than one guy coming back but there would need to be a non-guaranteed deal or two coming back where the Celtics can immediately cut the player to stay under the Tax.

The Nets nor the Grizzlies have enough CAP space to sign Marcus for $11 mill.

Danny Ainge and the Celtics are clearly in the driver seat.  Danny probably will not initiate a sign and trade if it turns them into a tax payer.

I think Danny would decline to match anything other than a one year deal at the MLE amount.  Even that would prevent Boston from keeping Jabari Bird.

According to Spotrac, Boston is $8,620,124 below the Tax line.

I have only seen him play when Boston plays Brooklyn. He has some talent but is not a knock down shooter. It would take more then him to make a cake.

I am stopping on this topic right now. We need to first know how much Smart would be signed for before we can even play the what if game.

I think it is rather hilarious that two teams that Danny has already fleeced would not have added him to their call blocking list.

If a team receives a player in a sign and trade, it is hard capped at the Apron, which is now just over $6M above the luxury tax level.
Here is some info on both topics:

92. Can a free agent be signed and immediately traded?

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q92

20. Other than financial penalties, are there restrictions on taxpaying teams? What is the "Apron?" What is the hard cap?

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q20

There is more under each section beyond the screenshots I inserted.  Please use the links provided for more on each topic.

I certainly do not claim to know every professional ball player, but who is "LaVert"?

Caris Levert

late first rounder in 2016, feel due to injuries in school. Talent wise should have gone lottery.

KDP,

Thanks for cluing me in on LeVert. I am still much in favor of having Smart as a Celtic rather than LeVert even if LeVert is apparently a better shooter.

Do it all wing, same size as Tatum and good enough ball handler with vision that can even play point...

Great R&B group - had a few hits in the early 90s.
