Celtics Wrap: Boston Extend Winning Streak In Kyrie Irving’s Return

NESN by Michael McMahon on Mon, Jan 7, 2019 at 9:46PM

It was a balanced attack that did the trick in Kyrie Irving’s return to action.

The Celtics had eight players score in double digits as Boston cruised to a 116-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night at TD Garden. The C’s remain perfect in their most recent homestand with their third straight win, while also snapping the Nets’ three-game run.

Irving led all Celtics with 17 points, while Jayson Tatum (16), Marcus Smart (12), Marcus Morris (12), Gordon Hayward (12), Al Horford (12), Daniel Theis (11) and Terry Rozier (10) all reaching double figures.

Rodions Kurucs led the Nets with 24, while Spencer Dinwiddie had 15.

With the win, the Celtics improve to 24-15, while the Nets fall to 20-22.

Here’s how it all went down:

STARTING FIVE
PG: Kyrie Irving
SG: Marcus Smart
SF: Jayson Tatum
PF: Marcus Morris Sr.
C: Al Horford

MAKING IT HURT
The Nets got off to a sizzling start shooting the ball, but the Celtics took advantage of 10 Brooklyn turnovers to take a 34-22 lead after the opening quarter.

Brooklyn came out firing from beyond the arc, sinking four-straight shots from long range to take a 12-4 lead in the opening two minutes.

The Celtics responded with a 9-0 run, highlighted by 3’s from Smart and Tatum.

Smart added back-to-back triples to gives the Celtics a 23-17 advantage with 5:34 left in the opening quarter.

The C’s pushed the advantage to double digits off a Nets turnover, with Hayward dishing to Tatum for the breakaway dunk to make it 32-22 with 1:04 left.

C’S MAINTAIN LEAD
The Celtics kept it business-like in the second quarter, maintaining their double-digit advantage, and taking a 56-45 lead into halftime.

Boston’s advantage grew to as much as 20 after when a Tatum layup made it 47-27 with 7:38 to go in the half, but the Nets clawed back with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes.

Smart snapped that cold streak with his fourth three of the half with 3:28 left in the half.

The final two minutes of the half went by without either team sinking a field goal. The Celtics were unable to capitalize on a handful of opportunities, including this drive from Marcus Morris that was denied by Jarrett Allen.

Two free throws from Spencer Dinwiddie brought the Nets deficit down to 11 points heading into the locker rooms.

C’S WITHSTAND THE PUSH
The Celtics were able to withstand an early push, coming back to outscore the Nets 30-29 in the third quarter to hold an 86-74 leading heading into the fourth.

After Marcus Morris opened the second half with a three to make it 59-45, the Nets roared back with a 9-0 run, closing the deficit to five points, the smallest C’s lead since the first quarter.

Irving, who had been quiet with only eight points in the first half, snapped the run with a three to spark a 8-2 C’s run to push the lead back to double digits with 8:13 left in the quarter.

A Morris three pushed the lead to 72-60 with 6:04 left in the third. Horford then fed Irving on the baseline for an easy lay in and Irving returned the favor the next possession, dishing to Horford who made it 76-60 on a jumper with 4:55 left.

The Celtics were able to maintain that double-digit advantage for the rest of the quarter.

ADDING ON LATE
The Nets were never able to close the deficit to under double digits as the C’s were able to cruise to their third-straight win.

A 14-2 Celtics run in the quarter gave the Celtics a 108-84 lead with 4:26 and pushed things well in hand.

The Celtics bench helped run things out late, capping the convincing win, ending it with a Robert Williams slams off the feed from Theis.

PLAY OF THE GAME
Kyrie says it’s good to be back. Daniel Theis agrees.

UP NEXT
The Celtics will wrap up their four-game homestand Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers. Tip-off from TD Garden is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Obviously Marcus Smart should stop taking all those ridiculous 2's and stick to those 3 point shots that he is so good at.

A nice win.  Not impressive, but only because a team that isn't a good team when they're healthy was down 6 players.

Rodions Kurucs had a career game.  Only averaging 19mpg season-to-date he was thrown into the fire last night due to the injuries.  He lit us up.  Good job by the 20-year old Latvian rookie who had been shooting <35% on 3s for the season but shot 5-8 last night.  Nice to see a kid handle pressure like that.

We saw the old Manimal last night but Kenneth Faried still came off the bench on a team that is down 6 players.  Think about that.  Every time Faried shoots I feel like he's going to break the backboard, but last night he took, and hit, a corner 3.  He shot 1-4 from 3, so he isn't good, but for him to even take that shot shows you just how much the NBA has changed.

23 turnovers for the Nets.  They're already on the high end but being down 6 players...?

Marcus Smart is now our new dead-eye shooter from 3.   That's so funny.  If you'll notice the hitch in his shot, where he catches the ball and brings it down to his waist before bringing it over his head to shoot, is gone.  He catches and it goes straight up over his head.  A quicker shot, less superfluous motion, less stuff that can make the shot go wrong.  He was 4-8 from 3 last night and is up to 34.7% for the season.  He is 45.5% from 3 in his last 5 games.  He also had 7 assists to go with his 12 points.  He also had 2 steals.  He has a 24 game streak of at least 1 steal.  That is the longest such streak in the NBA and he is tied for 6th overall in steals/game at 1.85/game.  The 5 players ahead of him (Westbrook, George, Covington, Butler, Harden) all play at least 33mpg, while Smart only averages 26mpg.  On a /minute basis Smart would be 2nd behind Westbrook. When he shoots and distributes like that, and plays the winning defense he always plays, his value to the team is off the charts.

Theis with a solid game. 8 rebounds and at least 2, if not more, tapbacks that gave us additional possessions.

Wanamaker looking like the smooth veteran he is, when he got the chance. He was 1-2 and the miss was a blown bunny. He doesn't move fast, he doesn't have exceptional athleticism, but he always seems to get to where he needs to be. Could he step into Rozier's shoes if TRo is traded at the deadline or in the summer?

We won, so this isn't sour grapes, but the refs were blind last night.

Indiana, at home, on Wednesday. Now THAT will be a test.

A "W" is a "W".  I'll take it.  The next little test on progress will be seen in all its glory tomorrow and Thursday.  Actually, this next stretch of 8 games through ATL with two B2B's to be more precise.

Not trying to add any more pressure, but the Celtics need to beat the Pacers and might as well throw TOR in there as well as must wins in this stretch.  Plain and simple.  I don't care if they are double OT's or what.  I believe they have enough in place now and the starting lineup is starting to gel nicely along with the bench.  Everything has been said.  Now it's time to put it to paper.

If those don't come through, we'll be playing from the 3-home games side of the playoff ledger throughout. Not saying we can't win it all from 5th place, but we have to stop losing the bs games by treading water when those above us lose and winning against those above us. Half the season is over.

Attending the game in Miami Thursday. Besides being a life-long Celtics fan , I am a big fan of the Miami Heat dancers. It's supposed to go down to 51 degrees that night, but I intend to brave it out.My friend and I are travelling by Lyft on the off chance that we might want to have a drink or 6.

Great win and not nearly as close as the score would indicate.

Lets see how look against Pacers - should be a good test.
