Sasha should be the face of the team.
He embodies the Laker spirit IMHO, even more so than Odum who threw that body block on RAllen two years ago.

Re: We hate him even more than you guys do
Sky,
All joking aside, this board (in its previous incarnation) has had many hotly debated "discussions" about the value of European players. It seems to be that the Lakers currently represent both ends of that spectrum. I was among those who thought Paul a "softie" a couple of years ago, but he has obviously adapted well to the NBA style and is a a force who is terribly missed by the Lakers at the moment. And the towel-waver is at the other end of that spectrum.
The Celtics have a player who was vilified as recently as two years ago for being the antithesis of what many people wanted to see on the floor. Brian Scalabrine was criticized at fat, out-of-shape, awkward, and lacking in basketball skills.
But, miracle of miracles, when KG and Perk were out for extended periods with injuries during the Celtics' championship season, Scal came in (much to the disgust of the nonbelievers) and did a wonderful job of filling in for them as the Celtics (most important) kept on winning. Scal is the type of player who can complement a very good team well. He can open up opportunities for the stars; he can be the fundamental-practicer when some of the others decide to free-lance; he can hit the occasional three; and he can play defense on the right players (those who are not unusually agile). He is what he is; and what he is is a very good role player when used in the proper scenario.
I'm mentioning this because I wonder if Vuky (although I don't personally like him at all) should be judged when the Lakers' bench is in a state of flux similar to what the Celtics' was last season. Is he perhaps sufficiently uni-dimensional that his value does not appear to best advantage unless he's playing in the right scenario? Is the floor being spread sufficiently to get him open looks? Without anything resembling a leader as far as I can see, is the bench able to function smoothly around him? I've always regarded him as a front-runner who seems to have the ability to pile it on rather than to suck it up when things are tough. I don't sense the "piling it on" opportunities have been all that frequent in Lakerville this season.
I'm not "sticking up for him" because I really don't like him. But it happens that his situation piques my interest for the reasons I've outlined above. And, in keeping with my mantra that "It's all about the team," a red flag goes up in front of my eyes when people evaluate an individual player in a vacuum.

To quote Sam, All joking aside, I've always considered Sasha as just a pretty face, a crowd pleaser for the Diane Canon types.
However, with his new hair do, I think he has transcended mere eye candy, he is simply G-E-O-R-G-I-O-U-S!
Who cares if he can't play D?
He is electric... At least 12 VDC worth!

babyskyhook,
You're right, there's some funny stuff there.
Q: "What do you call a Laker fan who thinks Sasha will hit 27 field goals this year?"
A: An optimist.
That one killed me.
He's dating Maria Sharapova? Ok, I'll give him credit for that, especially since it keeps him off the hardwood.

A corollary: How does Sasha end up w/ Sharapova and LO marries Khloe Kardashian ? This world is upside down sometimes.

a quote from your site, Is this even close?
He was drafted as a 6'7" point guard. His natural instinct is to handle the ball, and to make the pass. He was not drafted as a catch-and-shoot specialist, like Thabo Sefolosha.
Is Shasa even close to 6-7?
Did he shrink?

bsh,
that one was pretty funny too.
btw, I tried to find a pic of sasha and sharapova together and my research is telling me that American-born tennis player Andy Roddick is her boyfriend, not Sasha. Am I that far out of the celebrity loop? Is Sharapova and Roddick kaput?
I'm not convinced that anything that involves a Kardashian girl can have a happy ending. For Lamar's sake, I hope he found the diamond in the rough.
They're tall, they're rich and they're famous in a town where being rich and famous is like putting together dynamite and a blasting cap. I'm not surprised they've got hot babes. I was talking to a guy last night, in fact, who said he sat behind the Warriors wives/girlfriends at a game last year. He said they were all gorgeous too.
Don't tell me Stephen Jackson landed a beauty based solely upon his good looks and cosmopolitan outlook.

he's listed at 6'7", but we all know how accurate that is. I'd say he's more like 6'5". Of course, it's hard to tell since he's usually running around bent over in some weird way.
That post you quoted is sheer idiocy anyway. He is in no way a pg. His handle is bad and he is a gunner- he has no natural instinct to make a pass. Catch-and-shot is the one thing he can do (barely). It's ugly when he tries to create off the dribble. NOthing but bad things happen.
THat shows you that there are some ignorant Laker Fans besides those on BDC, as there is a small (maybe 5%) contingent that actually likes the guy. They are mostly young girls, as they are the only ones who cher for him when he enters a game, and I'm assuming they don't know shiite about b-ball (not b/c they are girls, but b/c they like Sasha).
Love that guy's post. Yeah, let's let Sasha create his own shots- then he'll really be good.

The Lakers trail by a point 5-6 seconds to go.......
If kobe is driving to the lane left to right and is covered by all 5 players and Sasha spots up open and within view of Kobe in the corner?
What happens?

I don't know how much reality there is to any of it. It would drastically improve my opinion of her if it's not true.
re: the players' wives in general. OH yes- a lot of hotties. But KK is not hot by any stretch of the imagination. She's anything but.
That's what I meant by the world being upside down. Sasha + Sharapova and Lamar w/ KK ? Doesn't make sense. If it was the other way around it would make perfect sense as KK is bigger than Sasha and she would just make him her houseboy.

Assuming the other 3 players are cut off from Kobe by the other team, he better launch one of his moonballs over all of those guys, b/c there is no way he is passing it to Sasha (and no way that I would want him to). If it was any other player, I would want him to make the pass and he probably would, but not Sasha.
Two years ago, KB made that pass, Sasha made the shot, got his contract and clearly never worked on his game again. Today- no way he is getting the ball.

Hey dude-
like the new avatar. Clowns are not my thing.
The Hollywood thing isn't my favorite thing, but considering how much Gasol improved his strength and toughness last year even though he did a CSI or some similar show last year, I'm not worried about him.
Ronnie- I knew that would be part of the package- he's been doing that stuff since the Indiana days, but he was still DPOY. He's in great shape and is learning the offense pretty quickly. I have no problem with him having some fun on the side. I think that video was shot this summer anyway.
It all comes down to the work they're putting in and how they perform. Pau can't rehab his hammy 24/7, and in fact none of these guys work 24/7.
All teams' practices are really short. Usually just a couple of hours. Add in a couple hours of stretching, weight work, physical therapy or film work and you've still got a lot of free time on your hands if you're an NBA player. So as long as they're not getting into trouble, I'm fine with it if they are in shape and working hard.
My problem is with guys like Shaq who don't stay in shape, come to camp looking like a blimp or get surgery in the late summer and then use the reg season to get back in shape.

I think if he was on the Clips you'd be dead right. But he's always wanted to play for the Lakers, knows KObe is the top dog, wanted to play for Phil and grew up with Lamar. It's a good support system. He's also 30. He wants to win a ring, and he's going to therapy, which I am a big fan of and which he has obviously been in need of.
I've always loved his game and his passion, and from what I've seen so far, he is going to be a perfect fit. His passing has been great. He's playing great D, rebounding, passing and mostly only looking for his shot when he's wide open (like that 3 vs Houston the other night off the double on Kobe). And he's fine being the 4th or 5th option. He's said a bunch of times he doesn't care how many shots he's taking. He's doing and saying all the right things.
And come playoff time, it is going to be so good to see him locking up with Melo and Pierce.
Melo had some of his worst games of the year vs Houston last year, and PP's fg % was 4.5% lower vs Rockets than his average, and he got to the line less than half as much as his average. Houston obviously plays good team D, so it wasn't all Ronnie, but there's no doubt that he is about the only player who can truly slow down Melo, PP and LBJ.

Artest is a lock down defender. I dont see him as being that good a team defender. Your thoughts?
Melo is looking plum scary this year.

He definitely excels in locking someone down.
And with Pierce and Melo, their teams like to isolate them to make plays- especially late in the game. Those guys are so tough in iso situations, which is where Ron's man defense will have its greatest value.
Have a good weekend buddy. I'm out!

Sam-
I love good international players- Pau, Dirk, Manu, Yao, Parker. I think it's great that the best in the world come to the NBA, and it's help making the game more and more popular worldwide. Most of them are well-schooled in the fundamentals and can shoot b/c they didn't grow up trying to get on a sportscenter highlight.
At one point last year in the AS game, Pau, Dirk, Yao and parker were all on the floor for the West at the same time, which I thought was awesome. Ignorance, prejudice ,and isolationism have been prevalent in large parts of our society for so long, it's great to see these guys get the reaction and reception that they get. So I think the Intl players are good for the game on many levels.
However, just like I don't like homegrown bums like Jerome James or Farmar, I don't like foreign-born bums like Sasha and Radmanovich.
Attitude issues, no defensive effort or stupid fouls, not knowing their role, not working on their game- all apply.
I thought Scal was a joke until last year. A big goofy unathletic white guy cheerleader-type. BUt he showed me something last year when they needed him. He can actually play. He's never going to be Paul Pierce or LO, but he doesn't try to be.
The difference between someone like Scal vs Sasha or Radmanovich is that he knows his limitations and plays his role. He's not trying to break guys down off the dribble and attack the hoop. He plays his game (stretching the floor) and doesn't make stupid mistakes. And he hustles on D without taking stupid fouls. So he is a perfect role player- a true team player, who is not concerned with his individual accomplishments.
Sasha and Vlad Rad do not know their own weaknesses, and because of that constantly are doing things beyond their ability: they take tons of bad shots, don't look to pass, turn the ball over, play bad D, etc.
They don't know their role, ignore their coaches and teammates and are then ultimate non-team players. I'm glad Vlad Rad is gone, and I can't wait for Sasha the douche to join him.
And this goes back to his entire career with the Lakers. This year is just more of the same. But he was doing the same thing last year with everyone healthy except BYnum and the rotation set. He managed to play himself right out of the rotation, thankfully, b/c it opened up minutes for Shannon Brown, who is exactly the opposite type of player. Sasha got very few minutes in the Finals last year, scoring no points, and didn't even get off the bench in the last game.
So I'm not judging him just off this year. He's got a whole body of work to look at, with the vast majority of his career (except, surprise, his contract year) being absolutely horrible. Resigning him at 3 yrs/$15m is the biggest mistake Mitch has made as GM (Walton's contract is a close second and Radmanovich's deal is third) as it has hamstrung them financially.
Especially when you combine all three deals- they've got $15M tied up in those three deals this year (Morrison's salary is from Vlade's deal)- if those guys deals aren't on the books, Trevor Ariza and Ron Artest are both Lakers, Trevor is taking all of Sasha's and Luke's minutes and there's money left for pg help. This team would be SO hard to beat if that was the case. It kills me.

Speaking of foreigners...
Sweden has its first true NBA player now, Jonas Jerebko on the Pistons. Will be interesting to see how he pan out.
He seems to be a team/defense first kind of guy.
