MrK,

Just a quick story. We went to see Good Fellas with my in laws and my father in law started rattling off stories after the picture. He belonged to the same social club of the real Good Fellas. He grew up on the same block in East New York that Henry Hill and Paul Cicero He knew them all!

I worked in a restaurant in Boston's North End called Francescos' which was the place where Gerry Anguelo (the Boston mob boss) used to hang out every Friday Night. In fact, I was there the night the FBI came to arrest him. He was yelling at them, that he would be out of jail before his veal was cold.

I have lots of great stories of growing up around the wiseguys in Boston. And all in all, if you showed them respect - you could not have been around better guys.

MrK,

Hope to meet up with you on St Patrick's weekend in Boston as some has suggested we go to Saturday's game and would love to hear those stories!

You are right....respect and they would give you the shirt off their back as long as you were straight and not with them.

My father in-law was hardworking guy who was asked to join time and time again, but he stayed straight. They all treated him as if he was one of them but without the rough stuff. However his brothers...my uncle in-laws.........

P.S.

Sam has some good stories about Good Fellas that I wish he could share again with us especially the story of him eating in a North End Restaurant. Hey Sam..tell the story again ....the one you told on Boston.com site.

Mrkleen,

We lived in the North End for 23 years, and Francesco's was one of our favorite restaurants. As long as you didn't cause a bit of harm to native North End families, it was the safest place in the world—and also one of the most caring. Our neighbors would "take the breezes" (as they would call it), sitting on chairs in the middle of the virtual alley where we lived. And they'd save a parking space (which was like gold) for us by putting a chair in it. Nobody violated the chair rule.

Sometimes, I'd come home from work, and they'd be sitting there, and I'd run into our apartment to get my blood-pressure kit. I'd run out and take my blood pressure first because I knew the fact of running in and out would elevate the upper reading. Then I'd take all of their blood pressures, and their higher readings (at rest) would usually be lower than mine. They absolutely loved that, and it gave them something else to discuss as they "took the breezes."

The sad part was going to their funerals over time as the North End continued on its inexorable "gentrification" course.

We also used to eat at Rita's (I believe that was the name) in East Boston. The food was good; and, if you wore a necktie, Rita would cut it off and hang it up.

To borrow a term from Jeb's repertoire, those were epic days!

Sam

Funny stories Sam.

Yeah, I went to Ritas once....but sometimes I felt like those places were trying too hard. I still go to Santarpios 3 or 4 times a year, and Rino's in Eastie is a great restaurant.

My uncle lived on North St in the North End...so spend a lot of time there. His apartment was the one which the "angel" came out of the window during the Fishermen's Feast. That was actually written into his lease....one day a year, you have to give up your bedroom and let a family use it to dress their daughter and fly her on a rope out the window and over North St. So many good times.

Mrkleen,

Agreed that Rita's tended to be a bit over-the-top. We went there mainly to please one couple who visited us from time to time. He even bought new ties for the occasion. I wore old ones.

I never knew about the angel tradition. Wish we could have seen it. I used to go to a cobbler very close to where you're talking about. I always thought that, although the origins of some of the festas involved religious disciplines, the festas inspired their own brand of good will and brotherhood because they were so much shared fun with nary a mean spirit pervading the crowd.

Another tradition we observed was the elephant walk. The back of our apartment overlooked Commercial Street, the U.S.S. Constitution and Bunker Hill Monument. Each year, when the Barnum & Bailey Ringling Brothers Circus would come to town by train. One of the first things they'd do would be to unload the elephants just in back of Old Boston Garden, and we'd walk the four blocks to see the unloading.

Then they'd march the elephants down Commercial Street, and we'd race like hell to our deck to watch them as they went by. The first time, we figured we could beat the elephants easily. After all, they were elephants. But those suckers really moved, even when just strolling.

After catching our breaths, we'd zip down to Commercial Street, where the elephants would be chowing down on troughs of pasta laid out for their pleasure. Pasta was flying everywhere. And, of course, nature dictates that what goes in must come out. What a mess!!!

I think they rerouted the elephant parade to end at Government Center for a while, but I notice it was back on Commercial Street this past October. Fortunately, some things defy what I call "Sam's Law"....all the good stuff gets wrecked.

The guys starts yelling at him, get the hell off of me...its my KNEE, not my heart you IDIOTS.

112288,

Your persistent requests cannot be ignored, but remember that you asked for it if the story is a tad long.

I'm sure a number of board members are aware of Joe Tecce's restaurant in Boston's North End. It has become such an institution that, several years ago, a small alley off North Washington Street was named "Joe Tecce's Way."

Tecce's was founded in 1948 and rocketed to popularity by being positioned as somewhat shady. There was never any signage on the brick building. At least in the early days, they used to serve wine in coffee cups, giving the illusion (whether or not it was true) that they were serving the wine without a license. In the process, they attracted luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor and that skinny boy singer, Frank Sinatra. The food was okay, but it was the cachet of the place that really attracted people.

One time in the mid-sixties, when I was still married to my first wife and was living in Sharon (where Sam Jones also lived), our best friends (Anna and Mel—both originally from the North End) and we decided to make our first venture to Joe Tecce's. I phone in the late morning, and this gruff voice answered, "Hullo." I gave my last name and asked for a reservation for four at 7:30 that night. "You got it," the voice croacked, and about a second later, the line went dead.

So that evening, we got there about 7:15 and encountered a very long line winding through a long, skinny, completely unlit, winding, interior corridor that led to the restaurant entrance. The portion of the line that we could see looked irritated to the point of surliness. But, after all, we had a reservation, so I was elected to go up to the head of the line and claim it. I think I was selected because I wasn't all that tall and could sneak through tiny spaces and I could also run very fast.

So I started through this very narrow passageway, having to inconvenience every single person in the line. "Scuse me. Scuse me. Sorry. Pardon. Scuse me." They all grumbled, but it wasn't until I was within 10 fee of the entry that this huge shadow completely blocked my path.

"Where you think you goin'?" I looked around. Any retreat was now blocked by people whom I had passed and who now crowded around to watch the confrontation.

So I had no choice but to stand my ground and reply, "We have a reservation." Grumbling in the ranks behind me, and whispers of "They don't take reservations."

It took about a full minute for the hulk to decide what to do. "Youse are one lucky stiff," he exclaimed and stepped aside.

So I finally reached the entry and the hostess, who turned out to be nine months pregnant. "Reservations for four," I said. "We don't take reservations," she retorted. Shouts of "I told you so" and "Kick 'em out" from the passageway. Visions of running the gauntlet on the way out tap-danced in my head.

But I tried to stay outwardly calm as I explained her about making reservations. It may have been my mimicking of the voice on the phone that rang a bell with her. She said, "Bring your party in." So I ran that dark, foreboding gauntnet, with people trying to trip me and making such rude comments that I actually welcomed those that were only snide.

I didn't have the heart to tell my three companions what they were about to face (actually I was just plain chicken), and the four of us ran the gauntlet, only to be stopped again by the Hulk. "What happened," he bellowed. "We've got reservations," I blurted. "You lucky stiff," he repeated. What a vocabulary!

So we got seated in this booth with plastic-covered cushions and, fortunately, next to the kitchen and as far away as possible from the entrance, where people were actually booing us. Finally, things settled down. We ordered, ate our (passable) meal, and temporarily forgot about all the hateful glances being cast our way.

Just as we were about to consider dessert, the pregnant hostess rushed over to our table and said to me, "Push over!" So I did, and she flopped down, holding her considerable lump in her hands. We asked if there was a problem.

"Yeah, there's a problem. He got 'im with the cleave!" "What?" "The cleave, the cleave, the cleave," she yelled as she repeatedly slammed the table with a chopping motion.

At that moment, the kitchen door opened, and two guys dressed in white cook's clothes emerged, dragging a third guy, similarly dressed, with blood cascading from one shoulder and leaving a huge red path on the floor. They dragged him out the door, and we never saw any of the three again.

Apparently, there had been a fight among the cooks, and one caught the other in the shoulder with a meat cleaver. We forgot about dessert, paid the bill, and got the hell out of there before the hostess decided to give birth or something. A resounding chorus of boos serenaded our departure.

There's actually a semi-interesting postscript to the story. The day after our adventure, Mel went on a business trip to White Sands, New Mexico. His job was building weather instruments; and, every once in a while, he'd go to the White Sands Missile Range where they'd attach his weather instrument to a missile and send it to the heavens.

When he arrived, Mel bought a copy of the El Paso newspaper. There, on an interior page, was a brief account of the "attack." Aside from mentioning a couple of names, the brief report contained no more than the hostess had told us. I had ransacked the Boston papers and had found no mention of it, but it made a newspaper some 2,000 miles away.

That's the story, 112288. Hope you (and maybe some others) enjoyed it (again).

Oh, and, by the way, much of the building housing Joe Tecce's restaurant was auctioned off in 2011 as he went into bankruptcy. I'm pretty sure there will be condos and a cigar store on the site. Reports are mixed (perfectly appropriate where Tecce's is concerned) about the long-term fate of the restaurant, but I'm assuming it's closed for good.

112288,

I recall reading something about a spring get-together, but nothing definite.

I checked, and the game in question would be vs. the Bobcats on Saturday, March 16th. Presumably people might want to stay over for St. Patty's Day if it's celebrated on Sunday, the 17th.

I checked three ticket sites, and there are quite a few tickets available for that game, mostly in the $34-$47 range (probably with a fee added). I spotted only a few instances where there are blocks of more than two together—and never more than 5.

I've gotten kind of burned out planning parties, and coordinating the purchase of tickets can be a complex affair. If someone would like to assume the responsibility of putting an event together, it would be great. Just let me know, and I'll be happy to publicize it as best I can. I just won't be able to do much of the actual planning and arrangements. A word to the wise: Be careful to ensure that any commitments to attend are accompanied by advance payment to reimburse you for your outlay for tickets.

It should be a fun event if it can be pulled together.

Go Celtics!

Joe Tecce's in Boston's North End to Close (At Least for Awhile)
A landmark Italian restaurant that has been in the North End of Boston for more than 60 years is going to be closing for at least awhile, as the building in which it resides is being renovated.

According to The Boston Herald, Joe Tecce's Ristorante on North Washington Street will be closing temporarily, as its building will be converted into 32 condos (the restaurant will also be renovated as part of the project). The article states that it is unknown exactly when the restaurant will temporarily shut down, but once it does, the renovations could take as long as a year.

[October 24 update: According to a poster on the Hiddenboston Twitter page, Joe Tecce's is now closed (a call placed to the restaurant confirms this, as their phone has been temporarily disconnected).]

[November 9 update: It appears that the closing of Joe Tecce's might just be more than temporary, as The Boston Globe reports that an auction is taking place on November 15 to sell off a variety of items from the restaurant, including light fixtures and Italian pottery. The article also mentions that the owners of the building are apparently still looking to redevelop it, with condos and a restaurant being part of the plan. At this point, however, it is not known whether the restaurant would be called Joe Tecce's.]

[November 16 update: According to The Boston Herald, the now-closed Joe Tecce's was basically sold off "piece by piece" yesterday at extremely low prices. Included among the items sold was the bar, which a buyer and seller of restaurant equipment bought for only $167, as well as a freezer and refrigerator that the owner of Twist, an upcoming Nashua, NH nightclub, purchased. There is still no word on whether a new incarnation of Joe Tecce's might go into the space, or perhaps a completely new dining spot. Keep checking back for updates over the coming weeks.]

The sale of the condos in the building is designed to help Joe Tecce's get on more stable footing, financially; as reported here earlier, the owners of the restaurant filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last June, citing major disruptions during the Big Dig construction project as a reason for the filing. The Herald mentions that the owners, who are still in the reorganization process, hope that the renovations and the selling of the condos will help them get out of bankruptcy.

Joe Tecce's first opened their doors in 1948 and soon became one of the most popular restaurants in all of Boston, with such celebrities as Liz Taylor and Frank Sinatra visiting the place over the years.

The address for Joe Tecce's is: Joe Tecce's Ristorante, 61 North Washington Street, Boston, MA, 02114. The phone number is (617) 742-6210. And their website can be found at http://joetecces.com/

Sam,

I spoke to a gentleman (no not Santa) at Celtics Group Sales Dept (Steve) - (1 - 866 - 423 - 8060) or (1- 866-5849 then press O for operator)

For Group seats 12-15 persons + for the game on Saturday March 16th AGAINST BOB CATS - they have as follows:

LODGE - CORNER/BASELINE - ROWS 17-23 - $113 PER TIX
BALCONY - CORNER/BASELINE - ROWS 10-13 - $63-$68 PER TIX

Not sure how we post this and get interest and head count. My wife and I would attend and perhaps my 2 daughters. Hopefully you and your wife. I would be safe to say MrK and his new bride.

Thoughts/Ideas/Strategy?

THIS IS THE SANTA I HAVE TO SIT WITH EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE AT MY IN LAWS Empty Re: THIS IS THE SANTA I HAVE TO SIT WITH EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE AT MY IN LAWS

Post by Sam Mon Dec 17, 2012 8:56 pm

112288,

The only inputs I'd have would be as follows:

1. First, I'm assuming that St. Patty's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, March 17, because the biggest parade in Boston always takes place on the Sunday nearest March 17. So, if you want to have a St. Patty's theme to the event, the logistics could get a little tricky. Should it be a two-day affair including socializing and a game on Saturday, March 16, and lunch/brunch plus visiting some Irish pubs on Sunday March 17? (My experience is that people who travel any distance want to be on the road for home not later than breakfast time on Sunday, but you could poll likely attendees to see what they think. The events you plan will affect what you want to call the affair: St. Patty's Weekend Party? Boston Bash? Whatever.

2. Once you're pretty well set as to the details, establish a thread dedicated to the event and explaining the details (including likely costs). Do NOT ask who's interested; I guarantee you'll get a hugely inflated estimate of the number who will actually show. Set a deadline and indicate that people can show their commitment ONLY by sending checks in the amount of ticket prices (don't forget to add the service fee if there is one). And indicate that the checks will be cashed whether or not they actually show up because you'll probably be in hock to the Celtics for a bundle, and they're not going to want to deal with cancellations. You'll have to determine to what entity the checks should be made payable—you personally, Sam's Centics Forum (I still maintain a tiny bank account in the name of the forum), or the Celtics, or some other ticket agency. (If my p.o. box can be of use with check collections, I'd be happy to make it available.)

3. Details announced on the dedicated thread should include dates, times and locations for whatever you want to do. Should there be a social time in advance (as we did last time at Legal Sea Foods)? Should there be a dinner before the game? (After would probably be too late, although there could be some ad hoc gnoshing in the North End. Should it be an optional weekend-long affair involving activities on Sunday, March 17—the real St. Patty's Day.

4. Scout around for moderately priced hotels in Boston (which could be a major problem on that weekend) and publicize them for the convenience of out-of-towners. The Boston Chamber of Commerce could supply a "things to do in Boston in March" list that might also be posted.

5. If there is to be a group dinner (or dinner and breakfast), decide where to hold them, and give people some idea of the price ranges involved. An abbreviated list of menu selections wouldn't hurt either.

6. Post monthly reminders of the upcoming event so that it won't slip people's minds. If people decide they can't make it, suggest that they find someone on the board who can use their tickets (and either reimburse them privately or accept a free gift). Do NOT get into the refund business.

Other than these things, it's pretty much a breeze. It's always helpful to have some other board members assigned to certain duties (for example searching for hotels), as long as you're not tripping over one another and duplicating effort.

As you know, these get-togethers can be a load of fun, and they can also be a load of work. You've had a lot of experience putting together initiatives in the business world, so you're an ideal point person on this endeavor.

Road Trip???

I have it marked in my calendar.

Santarpios is an excellent choice, and Joe Tecces brings back memories as college graduation was at the old Garden on a HOT HUMID June day and we ate at Tecces afterward.

Hope it happens and 112288 thanks for doing the legwork and Sam thanks for your savvy advice.
