Bill Russell mistaken for Morgan Freeman

George Stephanopoulos - hoops junkie that he is - thought Bill Russell was Morgan Freeman at today's inaguration:

Morgan Freeman?


George Stephanopoulos is clearly not a basketball fan ... 'cause if he was, he might've known the old white-bearded African American man hangin' out at the Presidential Inauguration was NBA icon Bill Russell ... and not Morgan Freeman.

George was providing the play-by-play for ABC this morning ... when he started pointing out some of the famous people in the D.C. crowd ... and mixed up one legendary black guy for another.

George was quickly corrected by someone on the production -- and he apologized for the gaffe.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day everyone.

Watching Alicia Keys perform at the Inaugural ball tonight surely takes any sting out of a Romney loss. Would anyone prefer to see the Osmonds instead?

It's little known or remarked upon, but Bill Russell was standing tall on the Washington Mall when MLK Jr gave his immortal 'I Have a Dream' speech. He was one of the courageous people who marched with Martin in Alabama to gain the civil rights that ultimately led to the election of President Obama. He's an American giant who never gets the credit he has earned. It's good to see he's recovered from his health issues. Something tells me there was a lot of loud cackling yesterday in the capitol.

Bill took some awful abuse as a Celtic from some racist Bostonians. Once his home was broken into and robbed, and the thieves left a deposit of human excrement in his bed. He handled the episode with the dignity and grace that typifies his way of being in life.

What is even less known is that MLK and his inner circle wanted Bill Russell to be standing prominently, right behind MLK, when he gave that speech to add some celebrity to it. He demurred, wanting the moment to be about MLK and the speech and knew that if he was standing in the front, as tall and as famous as he is, he would have been a distraction. So, he stood to the rear.

A truly great man. Both.
