Rajon Rondo is expected to have surgery next week on his torn right ACL. (AP)

Rajon Rondo will have season-ending surgery after all.

A source tells Yahoo's Marc Spears that Rondo "is projected to be out six months after surgery next week" to repair a partially torn right knee ACL.

Rondo suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of a loss to the Hawks in Atlanta on Jan. 25. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL before the game with the Heat on Jan. 27. Since his injury, the Celtics have not lost, going on a six-game winning streak.

Spears added that Rondo has "spoken to three doctors, one in person, and will decide as early as Friday" which one will perform his surgery. According to Spears, Rondo also will not attend NBA All-Star weekend in Houston Feb. 15-17 because he won't be able to travel so soon after surgery.

Spears added that the surgery will take place next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Good news that it is only a partial tear. Very good news indeed. Faster rehab.

Don't you hate when they schedule surgery at odd hours; 3:04am...

At least you don't have to starve all day if you had to stop eating after 9:00pm...

The surgery wasn't done then. That's when the reporter submitted the story. However, most surgeries are indeed scheduled in the early a.m. How do Mormon surgeons function without coffee?

W-

I worry about any surgeon functioning without coffee.

I did have a surgical procedure recently that sounds like a bad joke with an ironic twist if you consider the details.

I had a meniscus repair at the end of October. My orthopedic surgeon, who had operated on my knee after two prior injuries, retired a few years ago and my new surgeon is a very attractive young woman. Since it's so rare for an orthopedic surgeon to be female I consider myself fortunate. Until now she's just checked my knee whenever I'd tweak it, but this time it was a little more.

The ironic bad joke part;

So here I am in the operating room with this attractive woman, she's joined by two fairly attractive nurses and, of course, this is OK by my wife.

There's only one other guy in the room...

...his job is to knock me out.

Talk about eliminating the competition.

NYCelt,

I got a smile out of that. Thanks.

I did have one thought -- better that situation than having your wife in charge of knocking you out.

NY,

After reading your post, I began to have tremendous knee pain. Any chance I can get the contact info on your doctor and her very capable team?

Outside,

There have been times she's offered.

Pete,

I'll send you her name and number. I advise faking the injury, however.

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2013/02/rajon_rondo_und.html

All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo underwent successful knee surgery Tuesday that was performed by Dr. James Andrews, Celtics team president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told the Globe Wednesday.

"Dr. Andrews thought the surgery went great, clean, no complications, no other damage," Ainge said.

Rondo was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament Jan. 27 after suffering the injury a few days earlier in a double-overtime loss to Atlanta in late January.

Ainge said Andrews used a patellar tendon graft to help reconstruct Rondo's torn ACL, and that Rondo is optimistic about a full and speedy recovery.

Ainge added that Rondo is especially infatuated with Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who tore his left ACL in December of 2011, and had Andrews operate Dec. 30 with a patellar tendon graft, then returned to the field less than 10 months later. Peterson finished this past season just nine yards short of the NFL's single-season rushing record.

"And you know Rondo: He's going to want to come back faster than anybody who's ever returned," Ainge said.

The typical recovery time for professional athletes to recover from ACL surgery can be nine months to a year. However, the Celtics have said that they expect Rondo to be back by training camp, which begins in October -- eight months away.

Ainge added that Leandro Barbosa, who was diagnosed with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament Tuesday, also sustained medial collateral ligament damage and will wait about a month before his surgery to strengthen his left knee.

If Rondo is "infatuated" with Adrian Peterson's remarkable recovery, having the same surgeon perform Rondo's surgery is only one part of the deal. He also needs to get the same team that was in charge of Peterson's rehab.
