Man Down, For A Bit Empty Man Down, For A Bit

Post by bobheckler Tue Aug 26, 2014 1:04 pm

Yesterday, my car was broken into while I was in the gym and my wallet, laptop and tablet were stolen.

I've spent the last 24 hours plugging the holes with cancelling cards, filing a police report and burning 1 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back at DMV getting a replacement driver's license.

I won't be able to buy a new computer until I get my replacement credit cards, so my thread creation activities will be limited to what I can accomplish at the public library (which is where I am now).  Without an ATM card (replacement also coming) I'm living on the cash I had in my pockets for a few days.  Fortunately, living off the fat of the land is not a problem, that's why I was at the gym.

My last words to the sheriff's deputy, as I left the police station this morning, were "I hope you guys catch him before I do".

This has been the week from Hell.  On Friday my favorite pub, Clooney's, reopened under new management.  I found out then that one of the new owners is a guy that got 86'd from Clooneys because he beat up a woman.  I was there for that, I saw him dragging her out the back door, along the floor, with both hands in her hair as he dragged her.  I was one of the 4 or 5 guys who rushed back and made him let go and walked him out the door.  He was told never to come back.  Now, it's his.  So, now, I'll never go back.  I won't give my money to a man who would do that to a woman.  I'm going to have to find another bar stool to watch games from.  Happily, just about all the regulars are boycotting the place too.  That's what made the place so special.  There were a lot of good people, who loved each other like family and just enjoyed catching up over a beer or Jack-and-coke.  We're trying to come up with an alternative.

Evil won this week.  It's my turn at bat next week and then I'll have a chance to get the world start spinning in its nicely greased grooves again.  If I see the asshole who beat that woman, I'll picture him with my laptop and I'll pay them both back.

That sucks Bob. Someone broke into my car a few years back. Fortunately nothing of value was taken. They went through all my CDs, but didn't take a single one. Although I was glad to have my music, it made feel pretty uncool that nothing I owned appealed to the thief.

Sorry also to hear about your Bar.

Sorry to hear this Sad

Thieves act so shamelessly.

Freshman year at college, I had around $350 worth of books stolen. Had to replace them, which costed another $500.

Bob,

Sorry to hear your news.  I went without the internet for a couple days waiting on TWC and I thought I had it rough.

The loss of the bar really must suck.  Where else could you swear, curse, foam at the mouth or in other words, watch the Celtics these last few years and not have everyone in the place look at you like you have lost your mind.

Bob,

Wallet, laptop, and tablet -- the thief couldn't have picked a better trifecta of portable personal items that are a huge hassle to replace and I'm assuming also contain irreplaceable items. My heart sunk at the thought when I read your post, and I'm not even the one dealing with it.

On the "using lemons to make lemonade" front, I have a potential scenario for the bar. All the regulars stay away from the place and tell everyone they know to do the same. The place goes under, and Captain A-hole is forced to sell, but due to the depressed state of the business, it doesn't sell for anything near what he bought it for. You and/or your buddies (unbeknownst to the jerk) form a group that buys the place at a discount. The net result is that the jerk takes it in the shorts financially, and the good patrons of Clooney's get their neighborhood establishment back.

It's a thought. In the meantime, here's an Anchor Steam [clink].

What a major pain; and the DMV part had to be the worst.

Here's to finding a new barstool...quickly.

Very sorry to hear that, Bob. No one deserves to have that happen to them. We will definitely be thinking about you and praying for you as you recover from this very unfortunate event.

BTW, are DMV's like that everywhere?! Always a huge waste of time and some of the strangest people in the world on both sides of the aisle? (Meaning those either helping you or those being helped)

Bob

Your hassle is my job security.........although I wish the need didn't exsist.

And dbrown, DMV's are like that almost everywhere that I know of. Thank goodness many things can be done on line. My building has the local DMV office on the first floor and on any given day the line is right out the door into the lobby area. And it moves very fast too......(kidding)

Got a loaner computer from a friend who is a computer tech.  So, I'm back up.

Filed a police report.  I told him that my first reaction was to buy a gun (I have one, but it is an antique my father brought back from WWII) but then I settled down a bit and thought "if he's going to break into my house when I'm not there, because he knows my address from my driver's license and knows what my car looks like because he broke into it, then what good does having a gun do?  If I have the gun with me, then how is that going to help if he's breaking in when I'm not there?  And if I leave the gun at home, for home defense, then when he breaks in this criminal now has a gun under my name."  Sure, I could put a trigger lock on it (and I most certainly would) but it still doesn't answer the question "when would I use it?".  The cop assured me these guys rarely do that, there's too much risk that someone else might be home, neighbors might see him, etc.

I do have sword, a gift from a tribal chieftain in East Kalimantan Borneo, hanging on my wall. Somewhat sharp, not razor sharp but some edge, but it's quite heavy. There's no doubt in my mind it would just shear through limbs...

Bob, I am so sorry for everything happening to you!. This sounds like my life!! There is nothing worse than knowing that someone has been watching you, break into the car, steal your stuff and walk away without a care. NO GUNS.  This person will get caught one day, no one gets away forever.

Hey, you need a couple of bucks?????????????????

Bob, So sorry to hear all that. July 4, 2006 someone broke into my office for the purpose of using my computer to surf animal porn sites (who knew?) and he infected the drives with beaucoup viruses. It cost me over $600 to clean up. Fortunately he was not into kiddie porn or I would have lost the computer to a police evidence room for ages. He did get caught doing the same thing at another office. Freaky.

That really stinks. It makes you understand where people get the idea of cutting off the hands of thieves.

Maybe today we can make them watch tapes of NBA games from the tractor pull days of Riley's NY Knicks.

It is so hard today to live without the computer and all these cards, (i.e. debit) with direct deposit so prevalent in the work and even social security deposits.  Today I could not access my account, went to the bank, and THEY had trouble accessing the account themselves. I have to wait until tomorrow
for the problem to be rectified.

Discover notified me over the holidays that someone was trying to use my card, $600 at Walmart, and some small amounts at two hotels. Thank God, they rejected it and I closed my account.

We just have a hard time today just using cash.  Bob, I really hope you were able to stop all your cards. It is a real headache.  Take care.

Bob, almost every time I read the paper or watch a newscast, I'm tempted to buy a gun. Especially since I first expert with the M-1 and sharpshoter with the .45. But then I look at my wife and realize that, in this nitwit world, I'd be putting her in severe danger. So I now have a baseball bat on each floor of our house. Given my lifetime battering average, she's much safer.

Rosalie,

Thank you so much. What a wonderful, thoughtful offer. Fortunately I received my first replacement card today and may even receive a second one tomorrow. So, I'm good.

Monday afternoon, even before I was able to drive to the police station, I was receiving calls from my credit card companies asking me if certain new charges were mine or not (of course, I told them NO! and to cancel the card).

The hassle now going forward is to provide my assorted vendors that I conveniently had on auto-pay (electric, water, phone, etc) and give them my new credit card numbers since the ones they have on file are now useless.

To quote ancient Persian Sufi philosophers, "This too shall pass".

I got a free egg, spinach and sun-dried tomato wrap at Starbucks today. See? The worm is already starting to turn...
