MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Memphis Grizzlies hope Jeff Green can boost their offense and give them an edge in the tight Western Conference race after picking up the forward from Boston in a three-team trade approved Monday.

In the trade announced Monday, the Grizzlies send forward Tayshaun Prince to Boston and forward Quincy Pondexter to New Orleans. The Grizzlies also acquired point guard Russ Smith, a 2014 second-round pick, from New Orleans, and a traded player exception. The Pelicans send Austin Rivers, the 10th overall pick in 2012, to Boston in the deal.

Memphis also sends a 2015 second-round pick to New Orleans and a protected future first round pick to Boston.

The trade ends a long weekend for a deal that started coming together Friday with Prince not sure if he should warm up for a game in New Orleans. The Grizzlies held out both Prince and Pondexter from Sunday's 122-110 double overtime win over Phoenix. Pondexter watched the game from a box with general manager Chris Wallace and had his locker boxed up ready to go.

''It's a business,'' Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph said Sunday night. ''Tayshaun is like a brother. We're real close here in the locker room. It's a business, and he understands that.''

But Green is expected to provide more offense for Memphis, which has gone 5-5 over its past 10 games. That left the Grizzlies tied Monday with Houston atop the tight Southwest Division at 26-11 just ahead of Dallas. The Celtics (12-23) are busy rebuilding.

The 6-foot-9 Green averaged a career-high 17.6 points with 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 33 starts with Boston this season. He is shooting 43.4 percent from the floor and 30.5 percent from beyond the arc. The fifth overall draft pick in 2007 by Boston, Green was traded to Seattle on draft night.

Green missed the 2011-12 season because of heart surgery. He also has played with Oklahoma City and is averaging 12.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in 21 playoff games.

He will replace both Prince and Pondexter at small forward. Prince, 34, averaged 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 26 games with Memphis this season while Pondexter scored 4.5 points and grabbed 1.9 rebounds in 30 games with two starts.

The Pelicans are trying to stay in striking distance of a playoff berth in the West, and are happy to bring back Pondexter to the team where he spent his rookie season after being picked up in a trade with Oklahoma City during the 2010 draft. With a glut at guard, the 6-7 Pondexter is expected to either start or rotate with Dante Cunningham.

''Quincy is a two-way player, a multi-position defender that will add toughness along with an offensive skill set that we anticipate will help the Pelicans win games,'' Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said in a statement.

First Look At Jeff Green In Grizzlies Jersey Less Than Hour After Trade

That sure didn’t take long.

Less than 30 minutes after the trade being announced, Jeff Green was already rocking a Memphis Grizzlies jersey in an NBA TV tweet. The former Boston Celtics swingman had a look of determination on his face.

It wasn’t clear if Green, who was effectively traded over the weekend but couldn’t officially join his new team until NBA offices opened Monday, was actually wearing the Grizzlies jersey or if it was just the magic of Photoshop. Regardless, Green should be eager to get in the uniform of a Memphis team battling for a high seed in the Western Conference, rather than a Boston squad wallowing at the bottom of the standings in the East.

A source told Sporting News that nothing has been worked out yet between Prince and Celtics team president Danny Ainge. The two are planning to meet, though, and will go from there. Ainge and Prince (whose contract is up this summer) could simply agree to a buyout, which would allow Prince to become a free agent and sign on with a contender. He would have value for contenders in need of wing depth, like the Clippers (Prince is from Los Angeles) or the Spurs (where Kawhi Leonard is recovering from a torn ligament in his hand). Chris Mannix: A buyout possible, but not a foregone conclusion for Tayshaun Prince in BOS. Prince and Danny Ainge will discuss the situation, per source. Twitter @ChrisMannixSI - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors/tag/boston_celtics#sthash.s2f7mn3Q.dpuf

Mark Murphy: C's and Clippers seeking 3rd team to facilitate Austin Rivers trade. Could be day or 2 away. Source: "(C's) just trying to get best deal." Twitter @Murf56 - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors/tag/boston_celtics#sthash.s2f7mn3Q.dpuf

Marc Stein: One source close to the process says the Clippers are "very confident" they will strike a deal to land Austin Rivers this week Twitter @ESPNSteinLine - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors/tag/boston_celtics#sthash.s2f7mn3Q.dpuf

and on one other note:

The Celtics are also trying to decide the fate of point guard Jameer Nelson, who has not played the past five games and is expected to spend time on the inactive list. The club could buy out Nelson, but he has a player option for next season that he would mostly likely have to settle with the club. after those moves Stevens should have no problems figuring which 8-10 guys to play each night!

What does our cap soace look like now. We still have Wallace's $10M on the books for next year. Who else? How much room will be left in June?

I use this site for salary info, might not be 100% but damn close.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/BOS.html

we'll have 9 players under contract for about $34.3M

If Nelson stays and takes his player option that's another $2.8M

Crowder will be a RFA and his "hold" for cap purposes (until he signs) would be somewhere around $1.1M .

Prince , Bass, Thornton (if any are still around) would count as cap holds unless Ainge renounces their rights (which he SHOULD do).

so counting Crowder we'll have less than $36M in salary.

need to add the two first round picks salary's ( lets say $5M).

so now we're at 12 players and about $41M in salary.

with the projected cap at about $65M next year or so...that means we'll be about $24M under.

we can sign ANY MAX UFA next year, that wants to come here.

we COULD resign Bass (or another player) for around $5M if Ainge wants to keep him ( I will note here if we resign any of Bass, Thornton or Prince we keep the cap "hold" for them until we resign them).

that would be 14 players and we'd be right at the salary cap (not the tax line).

roster:

M. Gasol,L. Aldridge, D. Jordan ( pick one)
Zeller
KellyO
Sully
Bass or other vet?
Stanley Johnson (Arizona)- lottery pick
Crowder
Wallace- last year
Turner
Bradley
Young
Smart
Pressey
Tyrus Jones (Duke)- clippers pick

Ainge will have lots of options starting NEXT year now.

we all just need to keep that in mind the rest of THIS year.

kpd,

For team salary, are you including the 12.9M and 5M TPEs in your calculation? Danny is not giving either of them up, IMO.

Thanks Gyso,

I'm not up 100% with all the NBA cap rules for sure.

so help me out here.

no I was only counting Salary's on the books. I know the team also has various "holds" for other past players still on the books, but I assumed that with the chance to be so far below the Cap that it would makes sense to renounce those.

will those $17.9M in TPE's be counted as holds against the cap?

if so, then Ainge would need to make a decision about those , correct?

I still think if there is a Max FA that he can sign, Ainge would be wise to renounce those TPE's.

all of those things like part player holds and traded player exceptions are ways teams use that are OVER the cap to add players they wouldn't have a chance at. But when you can get under the cap as far as Danny can, doesn't it make more sense to just do it and then sign or trade for anyone you want with cap space?

What about signing a Max player and then also using the TPE to sign another near Max player? I'd like to see #18 in 2015-16. Then people can stop griping about Danny.

Worcester,

I believe that you cannot use TPEs to sign free agents.  You can use them for trades, sign-and-trades or to facilitate trades of other teams, but you can't use them to sign free agents straight up.  So, Danny could use the TPEs  to trade for players another team wants and then trade them for a high quality player.

Some people will never stop griping about Danny, no matter what.  Do you really think Cowens will ever forgive him for trading his beloved Kendrick Perkins?  Forget it.  Time doesn't heal ALL wounds, apparently.

Bob...you are so right. Danny would have to bring home banners 19, 20.21, and 22 to get Cow to forget the Perk trade.

Meanwhile, go Ohio State!
