PORTLAND, Ore. -- After beating the Boston Celtics, Damian Lillard wanted to deliver Avery Bradley a message. It wasn't anything sinister. Actually, Bradley surely appreciated hearing it.
"I told him he was the best perimeter defender in the league," Lillard said Thursday night after his Portland Trail Blazers topped the Celtics, 116-109. "Because he is."
Sometimes, Bradley's ball-hounding talents can be overshadowed by some of his Celtics teammates. Marcus Smart's physicality smashes through the TV screen and Jae Crowder's unique combination of ruggedness and mobility allows him to defend all types of players. The bash brothers, if you want to call them that, deserve their own credit. But Bradley's ability to disrupt guards should not be overlooked.
"He's quick," said Lillard, Bradley's primary matchup, who finished with just 14 points on 3-for-16 shooting. "He's strong. Good anticipation. And a lot of guys just, people say they're defenders. They look like defenders on some possessions, but that's what he does. That's what he wants to do. He's there every possession. He doesn't get screened. He's tough. You've got to give credit where it's due."
Also giving credit was C.J. McCollum, Portland's other high-scoring guard. He scored 17 points on 8-of-19 shooting against the Celtics defense, which clearly wanted the Trail Blazers to give the ball to anyone else.

Boston's strategy to force Portland to use complementary players didn't always work. Al-Farouq Aminu went off for a career-high 28 points while Allen Crabbe and Gerald Henderson combined for 26 more efficient ones off the bench.
"Part of the idea was to make it as hard as possible on McCollum and Lillard," said Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, "and you've got to do something. So I thought our guys did a great job on McCollum and Lillard for the most part, and those other guys stepped up and made good plays."

Although the Cs hung up a loss last night, the strategy to limit (can't really totally shut down NBA scorers) trying to make a lesser player on the other team score to beat you instead of that team's star is a great strategy.
It is not a new strategy in any way and even in any sport, but last night this other guy (who I never really heard of) went off for a career type of scoring night. Even all good plans do not always work out.
On the other part of the article, very nice compliments for Bradley from Lillard, and I am sure that many other guards in the NBA probably feel the exact same way.
