Kyrie Irving is enjoying his start to life as a member of the Boston Celtics both on and off the floor since arriving via a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer.

The four-time All-Star has led the Celtics to the best record in the Eastern Conference as they sit top of the standings with a 6-2 record.

He's clearly enjoying his role as the go-to guy on the team and is currently leading them in multiple categories.

Irving is averaging a team-high 21.8 points, 5.6 assists and 2.6 steals per game as he's coming up big on both ends of the floor.

The C's extended their winning streak to six games with a resounding 113-86 win over the Sacramento Kings at TD Garden last night where Kyrie posted 22 points.

The 25-year-old has been full of praise for the entire organisation since the moment he walked through the doors and recently added some glowing words about head coach Brad Stevens and how he's already had a positive impact on him.

“Brad fits perfectly in terms of that because he has an intellectual mind and is an intellectual human being,” said Irving. “It was something I was unbelievably craving in terms of what I wanted for my career.”

This can easily be construed as a criticism of Tyronn Lue and his other former coaches in Cleveland over the years but more so, it speaks to the reputation Stevens has built up for himself and how he's developed into one of the best coaches in the league.

He has turned the fortunes of the team around after they went into a rebuilding phase to now becoming legitimate championship contenders.

After Boston's recent win over the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich also had some nice words to say about his young counterpart, describing him as a "special person".

"He's going to be a great one before it's all over with. And he's already a hell of a coach," Popovich said.

With the Celtics on a six-game winning streak and the Cavs on a four-game skid, Irving will certainly be feeling even happier in Beantown and how things are working out for him so far.

Even with the injury to Gordon Hayward, Boston is looking like the favourites to claim the number one spot in the east and will make a strong challenge in the playoffs.

Many have already written off their chances of competing with the Cavaliers but they have shown they still have the talent to challenge and with 'Uncle Drew' in their ranks, they'll always be in with a chance.

bob,

The big thing in this article is Irving's praising of Coach Stevens.

We see praise for what Stevens is doing from so many different angles (coaches, players, administrators, etc) that I feel great that we have this guy on our team.

Ainge has procured the players, but Stevens has basically made every player better that has spent almost any time with him since his arrival.  He certainly has a way with the player development perspective. And, even more impressive is that some of the former Cs who have left Stevens have not been able to maintain their productivity on their new squads.

Just think how much further along all of those high draft picks that Philadelphia has had over the last five years would be if Stevens had been working for them?

Every time Stevens gains additional high praises from people around the league you would think that there would be more and more players in the league thinking about heading toward Boston if they get the chance. Some guys (Irving?) may even take the home team discount when his current contract ends instead of moving on for a status "max" contract with a coach he may respect less.

Cleveland fans said Kyrie was as bad as Isaiah on defense and no way would he resign with Boston after the two years. They said he couldn't lead teams to wins as the top player. They said a lot of things.

It's truly a testament to Stevens' ability to connect with his players in a unique way. Kyrie is a top-talent in this league and even he has become enamored with Brad's coaching. I suspect that he could connect with just about anyone and turn them into a successful player.

And this is also an indictment against Ty Lue. Lue's coaching (or lack thereof) is being put on full display. The Cavs are skidding, and he's been making mainly comments about their offense when it's really the defense having issues.

Stevens has been tested in some very unique ways. He was handed a fresh rebuild off the KG-Pierce trade. Later, he's given a roster of seemingly mismatched players and got them to play .500 ball and later the top seed in the East and a trip to the ECF. This year, he's given a completely different roster with a shortened preseason and later an injury to a star player in Hayward. That's all the proof we needed to see that this guy is something special.

Always nice to see Stevens getting the support and praise he's earned and deserves.
