Celtics Have Concerns About Kyrie Irving Re-Signing In 2019
JUN 7, 2018 4:18 PM
Kyrie Irving can be a free agent in 2019 and the Boston Celtics may retain Terry Rozier until they receive a commitment from Irving.
Rozier is scheduled to be a restricted free agent in 2019 as well.
"I think they're scared," said Chris Mannix. "I think they're scared and should be scared to some degree of Kyrie Irving walking in 2019. I know he had a great year, but you know there are people in Cleveland that will tell you that the Knicks should be considered a real threat for Kyrie Irving. Because Kyrie had talked about it, about playing with the Knicks with some players in that Cleveland locker room from what I was told.
"You know things can change. Obviously you go to Boston and you become the face of the franchise. You're on a winning team. Maybe the mindset has changed significantly?"
Shams Charania replied to Mannix's assertion with the expectation from Irving that he would be with the Celtics over the long-term.
"I know Kyrie Irving's mindset when the trade happened was 'Boston is my home for the foreseeable future.'"
bob
MY NOTE: The key phrase is "for the foreseeable future." That was before he actually stepped on the court in Boston. I know one thing, it does not pay to scare Danny Ainge. He is not scared to throw the lightning bolt, just look at last year when he replaced all but 4 players on a team that made it to the EC Finals. Think he wouldn't replace a player who didn't play in the playoffs this year, and we still made it to 7 games in the EC Finals, for a player like Anthony Davis? Kyrie might be the only player on the Celtics that has the combination of star power, youth and contract $ to make that even possible.
Let's also be clear that this is Chris Mannix's opinion. He's a Celtic local, not a national blowhard like Stephen A Smith, and so he might have some insight into how Celtics management is thinking, but it's just opinion.

I have not read or heard anything from the Celtics organization about this.
It is just another stupid made up story by Mannix.

Re: Celtics Have Concerns About Kyrie Irving Re-Signing In 2019
To look at the situation realistically, this is something that I think had to be a concern from the moment Boston dealt for Irving. His skill-set, and, I think, his demonstrated overall thinking, attitude, and mental posture, would lead me to believe he could easily go elsewhere.
So, you prepare and cover all your bases. Maybe you keep at least one of Rozier and Smart, no matter what. You carry a Larkin or another point for depth; there are always some of this type of player available. Maybe you even draft a point this year, or look to bring one in post-draft from the un-drafted collection. We have assets to part with, and will for the foreseeable future too. Always be ready to deal.
A lot of money and some winning wouldn't hurt. You plan on paying Irving, and you know you're going into the tax in fairly good measure.
Then, after those details are considered, you go out and play 2018-2019 and see where the chips fall. You can't lose sleep over these things.

fake news. no attributions, nothing to indicate that the Celtics are concerned. just one more crap article attempting to justify a payday.
Celtics aren't in the finals? Well let's come up with something interesting that will garner more readers. What a crock.
Fake news and click bait, what is the world coming to?

What Kyrie said in the Cav's locker room doesn't really matter any more. His situation has changed, for the better IMO. He wasn't happy then and now maybe he is in a better frame of mind.
But it doesn't hurt to state the obvious and get paid to do so. Chris Mannix did just that.

The Knicks? A team that hasnt be relevant since Willis Reed limped out of the locker room? LOL
Well that’s the benefit in what Danny has built here, flexibility. If Kyrie comes back strong and productive- re-sign him and trade Rozier next summer. If Kyrie is not happy here, package him up for a big and re-sign Terry instead.
And next summer when all of this comes to a head, Jayson Tatum will be the star on this team - not Kyrie. So let it roll.

I would like to think that Mannix has a little more credibility than most out there. It’s dumb to go off of what he talked about with other teammates in Cleveland. If he starts mentioning Celtics brass or if Jackie M confirms some of this then I would be concerned.
If there’s any indication that he is not inclined to sign a new deal (hope that’s not the case) with the Celts, trade his ass and we’ll still be fine.

NYCelt...What? "I think, his demonstrated overall thinking, attitude, and mental posture, would lead me to believe he could easily go elsewhere."
I have previously suggested that the Celtics keep Rozier as insurance but I do not see Irving wanting to leave. If anything this year may have cemented his decision to want to come to Boston. He is the main guy on a team that is stacked with young talent. He praises Brad Stevens and his teammates constantly. The City loves him. And he is smart enough to realize that he is on the right team long term.
The thing that is most distasteful about what Mannix said is the absurd idea that the Celtics are scared of losing Kyrie. That is about the dumbest thing I have heard from him.
Boston is not scared of anything.
