Report: Markelle Fultz will leave Sixers to see shoulder specialist, won't play or practice

The strange, difficult season of Philadelphia 76ers guard Markelle Fultz just got a little stranger. David Aldridge of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Fultz is scheduled to see a shoulder specialist, and won’t play or practice with the Sixers until after that happens.

At the direction of his attorney, Raymond Brothers, @MarkelleF is scheduled to see a shoulder specialist early next week. Per Brothers, Fultz will not participate in team practices or games until after the the specialist has had a chance to evaluate him.

Raymond Brothers is also Fultz’s agent in addition to being his attorney.

Fultz, the first overall pick in the 2017 draft, spent the majority of his 2017-18 debut season out of commission due to a shoulder injury. But at the same time, some speculated that he simply had the yips, or that a non-Sixers coach tinkering with his shooting mechanics backfired.

Fultz spent a significant amount of time working with shooting coach Drew Hanlen over the recent offseason, and was expected to return stronger than ever. But so far, he’s looked tentative and lost, and sometimes even downright weird. The plot thickened even further recently when a report surfaced that Fultz and Hanlen had parted ways and were no longer on speaking terms.

The timing of this announcement shouldn’t be ignored. The night before Aldridge tweeted the news from Fultz’s agent and attorney, Fultz was benched in the second half of the Sixers’ game against the Phoenix Suns. T.J. McConnell took his place and helped lead the team to 119-114 victory. And just a week before that, Fultz lost his starting spot when the Sixers traded for Jimmy Butler. There’s just less room on the floor for a player that’s struggling so mightily, especially with the team moving out of rebuilding mode and into win mode.

Fultz has played in 19 games this season, and is averaging 8.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game over 22.5 minutes. It’s not clear if Fultz has a lingering shoulder injury that is still inhibiting his play, or if his agent is seeking a clean bill of heath to finally quiet the persistent questions about whether Fultz is still hurt. Either way, it’s a decent bet that the Fultz-Sixers saga will somehow get more bizarre before we see the end of it.

MY NOTE:  Jayson Tatum AND a good pick for this unmitigated disaster.  Danny, you f-in BEAUTY!  I know this sounds cold, but I'm past feeling sorry for Markelle Fultz.  I don't wish him harm or bad times, but he is either hurt or he's not.  If he's hurt then this medical sabbatical is LONG overdue.  If he isn't hurt, or is just mildly hurt, then I don't have any sympathy.  The NBA is a man's league and, if you think the competition for roster slots is brutal it is even worse competing for minutes.  As I remember it Danny started to sour on Fultz after Brad talked to his high school coach and asked him how he handled losing.

The Sixers will have to pay Fultz $9.7M next year, if he's still on the team.  That's $9.7M NOT available to sign Butler.

Remember, this is the latest mutation of Markelle Fultz's shot.  He came into this league as a shooter.  Danny Ainge should be freaking cast in bronze, even if he's still alive.  What happens with the Sacto pick is unknown but this deal, even without that pick, has to go down as a coup that rivals many of the ones Red did.

What can you say.

I am just glad Danny decided to draft Tatum.

Tatum by the way is not having some 2nd year slump. I would like to see him get more than 13 shots per game. I think if you get him 17-18 shots per game he will be a 24 PPG scorer.

Why did he wait until after the Butler trade to consider this?

It does make me wonder: is it in his head or in his shoulder?

I think he is a real head case. How the hell do you forget how to shoot? If a person is involved in a serious accident they may have to learn how to walk again but the issue with his shoulder (what was wrong with it)

I thought he was already working with a specialist. The other night he double clutched at the free throw line. He needs to go to a hypnotist. Maybe there is some unidentified oddity.

I've had a serious shoulder injury, and it did not affect my shot at all. Still making a mind boggling .135% of my 2 pointers and .064% of three pointers, and I'm not even getting paid $9.7 M per year.

Markelle, enjoy your windfall salary, stop pouting, and take financial management courses so you will be set for the next 70 years. Your NBA career is over.

Best for thing for Fultz at this point would be to get traded to a bad, small market team with no expectations. Out of the glare of the media and win-thirsty fans he may have a chance to figure out whatever is going on with him and regain his mojo.

76ers sound caught off guard about Markelle Fultz stepping away

Dan Feldman,NBC Sports 22 hours ago

General manager Elton Brand: 'There's nothing that we saw medically that didn't allow him to play'

Markelle Fultz has played in all 17 of the 76ers’ games this season, starting until they traded for Jimmy Butler. A couple weeks ago, Fultz called himself generally healthy.

Then, Fultz’s agent, Raymond Brothers, informed the 76ers the guard wouldn’t play or practice until visiting a specialist Monday. Fultz will miss at least three games – against the Pelicans, Cavaliers and Nets.

76ers coach Brett Brown:

It’s kind of the first real sort of red-flag-type news.

This news about his shoulder, it did catch me off guard. But if it’s that real that he needs to go seek further consultation, then we support him. In my eyes, it’s not complicated. If that’s what it is, then we’ll support him.

76ers general manager Elton Brand:

We thought it was the regular bumps and bruises.
There’s nothing that we saw medically that didn’t allow him to play.

This yet another odd turn in a saga that already included plenty of contentiousness, animosity, rumors and cringe-worthy moments. At this point, it’s hard to be shocked by anything with Fultz.

It’s also hard to take the 76ers seriously when they suggest it seemed like business as usual. Fultz’s shot is disturbingly broken. There is clearly a problem. Maybe letting Fultz play without fretting over the issue was the right course, but how surprised can Philadelphia be that he took a more drastic measure?

Hopefully, the specialist helps Fultz identify and fix this issue.

bob
MY NOTE:  "Curiouser and curiouser", said Alice.  Fultz needs a new lawyer/agent.  He also needs a trailblazing proctologist to crawl inside his ass and find his head.

Markelle Fultz Trade Rumors: 76ers Considering Move Amid Shoulder Issues

PAUL KASABIAN
NOVEMBER 24, 2018

Philadelphia 76ers guard Markelle Fultz's tenure with the team that drafted him first overall may be coming to an end after a bizarre year-and-a-half to begin his NBA career.

Per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, "Fultz is no longer in the Sixers' long-term plans." He also noted that "multiple sources" said the team is "considering trading Fultz."

Fultz has played in 19 games this season with 8.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 22.5 minutes per contest.

On November 20, David Aldridge of The Athletic D.C. reported the following news:

8:02 AM - Nov 20, 2018

Derek Bodner, Sam Amick and Jared Weiss of The Athletic then reported Fultz saw a specialist last Monday and that "sources with knowledge of Fultz's thinking have also told The Athletic that the player would prefer a fresh start with a new team."

That trio also wrote that Fultz was battling a wrist injury, which has played a part in his ongoing shooting issues, most notably free throws.

A fantastic college scorer, Fultz posted 23.2 points per game on 47.6 percent shooting in one year at the University of Washington. He also added 5.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game.

He was the clear leader to be named the No. 1 overall pick in the lead-in to the 2017 draft, and that ended up being the case when Philadelphia took him first.

However, the injuries and disconnect between Fultz and his camp and the team have gotten his NBA career off to a rocky start. Right now, his talent is obscured by talk regarding his shoulder and latest shooting technique on a regular basis, and that's been the case for the better part of his pro tenure.

It also probably doesn't help Fultz that the 76ers are Eastern Conference contenders, which exacerbates his issues. If he were on a young and developing team further away from competing for a conference or league title, he may be better off as he works to get his career back on track.

Fultz has showcased what he can do at his best, notably notching a 13-point triple-double in just 25 minutes against the Milwaukee Bucks to close the 2017-18 regular season. Clearly, the 20-year-old's career can be saved.

But at this point, it's probably best for him and the 76ers to move on.

bob
MY NOTE: He's a question mark, both physically and mentally. They won't get much for him. Think about that. We get Jayson Tatum and a pick that, at worst, will be no worse than whomever Philly gets for Fultz. That's a free Jayson Tatum.

The latest on Markelle Fultz involves security cameras and nondisclosure agreements

Ben Rohrbach,Yahoo Sports Fri, Dec 14 1:58 PM PST

Every update on Philadelphia 76ers guard Markelle Fultz, the former No. 1 overall pick who mysteriously lost his jump shot, is more bizarre than the next, and this one is no different.

Many before her have tried, including a number of NBA teams, but The Washington Post’s Candace Buckner continued to dig into whether Fultz’s shooting woes are physical or mental (or both), and her quest uncovered one of the strangest shreds of evidence we’ve heard in a saga full of them. It involves the 20-year-old’s mother, Ebony Fultz, who is reportedly “an imposing figure in her son’s life”:

"Fultz is now a professional on a four-year contract worth $33 million, but close associates said Ebony still goes to great lengths to shield him. During Fultz’s first season in Philadelphia, Ebony had cameras installed inside his New Jersey home, according to several people familiar with the setup who described the indoor surveillance as unusual. The cameras have since been removed. Multiple people said Ebony has asked some who have dealt with Fultz to sign nondisclosure agreements for reasons that are unclear to them."

This detail is one of many in Buckner’s profile that portrays Ebony Fultz as overbearing. According to Buckner, she and her son’s agent, Raymond Brothers, are the center of a dwindling circle around the second-year Sixer — a development that has reportedly left Keith Williams on the outside looking in.

Williams built the shooting form that led the University of Washington and the 76ers to covet Fultz. He also caught some of the blame for the deterioration of that form. Williams denied any involvement in Fultz’s downfall, pointing instead to a shoulder injury Fultz cited the summer before his rookie season.

Williams told Buckner that Fultz informed him in the summer of 2017, “It feels like somebody’s holding my arms down,” which would be the earliest known evidence of his most recent diagnosis: thoracic outlet syndrome. It took more than a year and doctors in the double digits to discover that ailment.

And just when we think we might be closer to determining that Fultz’s shooting problems are physical in nature, we’re left with this analysis from “a person with a close connection to Fultz,” via Buckner:

“There’s definitely crazy [expletive] going on with the mom and how involved she is and how overprotective she is. The best possible situation is if the mom just backs off for a period of time and gives him a chance to breathe.”

That brings us back to the psychological side, which leads us to believe once again that this strangest of NBA stories is rooted in issues both mental and physical. He’s young enough to sort both out, so long as he has the right people around him. This latest development makes you wonder if he does.

Physical issues or psychological issues this kid is a mess, but it is no wonder with the way the 'ers have handled him and the way that the local press has treated him.

A change of scenery may be the only thing that possibly gets him back to being a basketball player again.

The Sixer medical staff has got to be the worst in professional sports. The list of players they have mismanaged is as long as my arm. This is likely part them, part Fultz being a headcase. But any conversation about medical issues and the Sixer has to mention their utter incompetence over many years.

My own take on this is it's another example of why there needs to be restrictions on one-and-done as well as a later mandatory age to get into the NBA draft.

Part of this, I think, is taking a player so young that he can't possibly be fully mature physically or psychologically, and sticking him in a professional league.

Yes, there are some that are ready, but far more that are not.

From Wikipedia -

Garfield was carried to an upstairs floor of the train station, conscious but in shock.[34] One bullet remained lodged in his body, but doctors could not find it.[35] Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln was deeply upset, thinking back to the assassination of his father Abraham Lincoln; he said, "How many hours of sorrow I have passed in this town."[35]

Garfield was carried back to the White House, and doctors told him that he would not survive the night; nevertheless, he remained conscious and alert.[36] The next morning, his vital signs were good and doctors began to hope for recovery.[37] A long vigil began, and Garfield's doctors issued regular bulletins that the American public followed closely throughout the summer of 1881.[38][39] His condition fluctuated; fevers came and went, he struggled to keep down solid food, and he spent most of the summer eating only liquids.[40]

Changing Garfield's bedclothes
Navy engineers rigged up an early version of the modern air conditioner in an effort to relieve him from the heat of a Washington summer. Fans blew air over a large box of ice and into the President's sickroom, and the device worked well enough to lower the temperature 20 degrees.[41] Doctors continued to probe Garfield's wound with dirty, unsterilized fingers and instruments, attempting to find the bullet,[42] and Alexander Graham Bell devised a metal detector specifically to find it. He was unsuccessful, partly because Garfield's metal bed frame made the instrument malfunction, and partly because self-appointed chief physician Doctor Willard Bliss allowed Bell to use the device only on Garfield's right side, where Bliss insisted the bullet had lodged.[43] Bell's subsequent tests indicated that his metal detector was in good working order, and that he would have found the bullet had he been allowed to use the device on Garfield's left side.[44]

On July 29, Garfield met with his Cabinet for the only time during his illness; the members were under strict instruction from the doctors not to discuss anything upsetting.[45] Garfield became increasingly ill over a period of several weeks due to infection, which caused his heart to weaken. He remained bedridden in the White House with fevers and extreme pains. His weight dropped from over 200 pounds (90 kilograms) to 135 pounds (61 kilograms) as his inability to keep down and digest food took its toll.[46] Nutrient enemas were given in an attempt to extend his life because he could not digest food.[47] Sepsis and infection set in, and the President suffered from hallucinations for a time.[48] Pus-filled abscesses spread all over his body as the infections raged.[49]

Doctors discuss Garfield's wounds

Path of the Bullet that wounded President Garfield
On September 6, Garfield was taken by train to the Jersey Shore to escape the Washington heat, in the vain hope that the fresh air and quiet might aid his recovery.[48] He was propped up in bed before a window with a view of the beach and ocean.[50] New infections set in, as well as spasms of angina. He died of a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm,[51] following sepsis and bronchial pneumonia at 10:35 pm on Monday, September 19, 1881 in Elberon, New Jersey, two months before his 50th birthday. During the 79 days between his shooting and death, Garfield's only official act was to sign a request for the extradition of a forger who had escaped and was apprehended after he fled to Canada.[52]

Mourners pass Garfield's body. Front L–R, Secretary of State James G. Blaine, President Chester A. Arthur, former Vice President Schuyler Colfax, former President Ulysses S. Grant, and 1880 Democratic presidential nominee Winfield Scott Hancock

President Garfield's casket lying in state at the Capitol Rotunda

The funeral in Lake View Cemetery
Most historians and medical experts now believe that Garfield probably would have survived his wound had the doctors been more capable.[53][54] Unfortunately, most American doctors of the day did not believe in anti-sepsis measures or the need for cleanliness to prevent infection.[55] Several inserted their unsterilized fingers into the wound to probe for the bullet, and one doctor punctured Garfield's liver in doing so. Also, Bliss had supplanted Garfield's physician Jedediah Hyde Baxter. Bliss and the other doctors who attended Garfield had guessed wrong about the path of the bullet in his body; they had probed rightward into his back instead of leftward, missing the location of the bullet but creating a new channel which filled with pus. The autopsy discovered this error and revealed pneumonia in both lungs and a body that was filled with pus due to uncontrolled septicemia.[56]

I think it will be very difficult for Fultz to make it in Philly. And Philly really does not have a spot for him to really develop with Ben Simmons running the point.

But he does have an issue with the shoulder according to the recent reports so the first thing is to get that corrected. It may be best for him and the Sixers to part ways. The Sixers will take yet another hit because his value will not yield two #1 picks.

I still feel bad for the kid and hope he is able to get through this and become a good NBA player.

The autopsy discovered this error and revealed pneumonia in both lungs and a body that was filled with pus due to uncontrolled septicemia.[56]

worcester,

Personally, I'd rather go the way Warren G. Harding went in 1923.  He was in San Francisco.  There is a hotel on New Montgomery Street called The Palace Hotel, which is where Harding died from a heart attack.  Across the street from The Palace Hotel is a bar called The House of Shields.  It's a really nice, OLD bar, with all that beautiful old wood and all.  On the wall in The House of Shields is a picture of Warren G. Harding.  I thought that was a nice touch, but then heard the legend, the myth from the bartender.

It  was learned, post-Presidency, Harding had had many extramarital affairs.  Furthermore, back in the Roaring '20s, The House of Shields was a bar on the first floor but a cathouse, to use a euphemism, on the upper floors.  Customers would go there to drink and be solicited by "working girls" (alcohol and pretty women who are willing has always been a profitable business model going back to the very early days of fermentation).  There is also a tunnel that runs under the street between House of Shields and The Palace Hotel, now sealed to the public.  The rumor/myth/legend is that Harding had his heart attack while in flagrante delicto on one of the upper floors and was carried through the tunnel to The Palace so he wouldn't be remembered as having died (or dying) in such a place of ill repute.

Report: Markelle Fultz will leave Sixers to see shoulder specialist, won't play or practice Empty Re: Report: Markelle Fultz will leave Sixers to see shoulder specialist, won't play or practice

They have this kid reeling. He does not know which end is up or down. My personal opinion was that he was overrated to start off with. He was riding the wave of his high school years and the camps that he played in. Remember, his college team did nothing in the tournament and he was living off his laurels.

Once he got to Philly, he was hurt, and things have gone downhill for him. He will still have plenty of money, but I wonder if he will end up in Europe for a stint once he is done with Philly or some other team will take him under their wing and hope to turn his life around.
Danny knew something, whether it was his interviews with the Celtics, his workout (or did he not work out for them) All I know is, thank God we have Tatum and they have Fultz. No pity here

Actually 76ers have a rookie 2 Landry Shamet who is now shooting 40% from 3 and was 4-5 today, kid is coming on like gangbusters, Fultz definitely needs to find a new home.
