NBA Rumors: How Celtics Feel About Anthony Davis Sr.’s Critical Comments

NESN by Adam London on Fri, Feb 1, 2019 at 10:36PM

The Boston Celtics have quite a bit to offer Anthony Davis, but a shining assessment of the franchise from the star’s father definitely is not one of them.

As rumors continue to swirl about the New Orleans Pelicans big man’s future, Anthony Davis Sr. made it abundantly clear Friday that he does not want his son to be traded to the Celtics. The Brow’s dad apparently was turned off by Boston trading Isaiah Thomas two summers ago, and he seems to believe the organization lacks loyalty.

Despite the harsh words, Danny Ainge and Co. reportedly will continue to march on in their pursuit of the six-time All-Star. In a report during ESPN’s broadcast of Friday’s tilt between the Celtics and New York Knicks, Adrian Wojnarowski delivered encouraging news to green teamers who hope to see Davis shipped to Boston.

In a mid-game ESPN hit, Woj just said the Celtics are undeterred by Anthony Davis’ father’s take on things, and that the Pelicans haven’t heard anything so far that would dissuade them from waiting until after the season.

Wojnarowski’s report makes sense, as Davis Sr. ultimately isn’t the one calling the shots about his son’s future. But what should come as a red flag to the Celtics is a new report that indicates the 25-year-old doesn’t view Boston as a long-term destination. While the younger Davis might currently have his eye on joining the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics certainly would become more appealing if Kyrie Irving is around for the long haul.

While AD’s future couldn’t be more uncertain at the moment, one thing is for sure: don’t expect the rumors and drama to end any time soon.

The City of Boston and the 6 state NE area has a deep and unapologetic culture when it comes to their sport teams.  Connecticut being the rebel state that swings towards NY.

Some player is traded to Boston or is drafted by a Boston team and invariably you either learn that they were always a fan or they hated Boston before they went there.  There is something very special going on.

This is one reason why Danny Ainge is likely to push forward with his intentions of making a trade for Anthony Davis Jr.  The loss for the Celtics will be deep.  Boston fans have an almost paternal attachment for their young guys.  They are our kids.  They're our pups.  We encourage them to excel.  We criticize their shortcomings and embrace their achievements.  They are the essence of what it means to be young and gifted.  They are the best of kids ,  better than anyone elses'.  With those feelings serving as the underpinnings, we will never be completely at ease with sending them off.

Danny understands those sentiments.  But he is called Trader Danny, a Riverboat gambler that will put the deed to the farm on the table if he believes he has a winning hand.

This is a perilous time in the minds of most Celtics fans but Danny knows and plays this game better than any GM in the league.

He is going to pursue AD and the only one he needs to convince is NOLA.  He doesn't give a damn about Rich Paul or Lebron.  He cares even less for the Lakers and Magic Johnson.  His ultimate goal remains a pairing of two elite level basketball players.  The urgency to make a deal for AD has increased because of all the recent uncertainty about Kyrie Irving.  One might think that Danny has all the reason in the world to step away from this but he is not likely to do that.  Once he makes the trade for AD and you have the news conference and we see Davis sitting there with the Celtics brass holding up his Celtics Jersey with # 23 it will be the first step in turning him into a Celtics fan.  A call and conversation with Bill Russell, a closer tour of the facilities, a look up high at the championship banners and numbers of those that have been enshrined in Celtics lore will begin to melt away his skepticism.

The deal will be sealed when he steps on the parquet floor for the first time and looks Kyrie in the eye and realizes that this is what he needs.  They wanted to play together and here they are together.  The deal will be sealed when our amazing fans begin chanting "Let's go Celtics"
