Boston Celtics ‘have been really aggressive out on the marketplace’ (report)

By John Karalis | JKaralis@masslive.com

The Boston Celtics may have missed out on Anthony Davis, but that doesn’t mean they’re done trying to make moves.

The NBA draft is coming up on Thursday, and Boston has the 14th, 20th, and 22nd picks in the first round along with a second round pick. But according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics don’t want them.

“Boston’s got a lot of options. They have assets,” he said during an appearance on SportsCenter. “I’m told they have been very aggressive out on the marketplace. Three picks in Thursday’s NBA draft, I’m told they don’t want to have three rookies on the team."

Danny Ainge has not been one to sit idly by when business is being done. Missing out on Davis and potentially losing Kyrie Irving sets Boston back, but every summer is full of unforeseen options. There is always a surprise, and Boston still has to try to position themselves to take advantage of that.

One way they can do that is by packaging their picks, and possibly a player, to move up and grab a highly-valued rookie. They can also package some or all of their picks and move out of the draft, instead choosing to roll the dice in a future draft.

Even if Boston isn’t a primary trade partner, Ainge has, in the past, happily participated in deals as a third team willing to take on spare parts for some additional compensation.

However Ainge gets a deal done, it’s clear that the Celtics are actively looking to move draft picks ahead of Thursday’s draft.

Boston missed out on Davis, but don’t think he was Danny Ainge’s only target, especially with a trove of young players and draft picks that he can dangle to upgrade the roster. “What is Danny Ainge planning that we’re not thinking of right now?” says a league source. “I’m sure Danny has something up his sleeve.” Multiple sources point to Bradley Beal as prime option—particularly if Irving leaves. Beal is coming off his best season and showed a wider range of skills after the Wizards lost John Wall at the end of December. – via The Athletic

Getting Beal will result in giving up multiple players and a pick.  Likely.  Clear indication that without Kyrie the Celtics may have a scoring deficiency.

Beal makes the similar salary as Anthony Davis too!!

I see no reason to think Danny would send out the players needed for Beal, when he passed on Davis?

Beal has TWO years left on his deal instead of one is the only plus.

Like you keep saying dboss....we don't NEED another guard, just keep Rozier.

I think Danny has to be willing to take a step back. Let go of his dream of AD and let go of his dream of keeping KI long term. Fans need to understand the dynamics at play here. This particular article is not new as we have heard about Beal before. There are a lot of options out there. Focus on the big man issue through the draft or trade that does not gut your team seems like the best way to go.

I however prefer the draft and develop option until we clear out some cap space in a few years and can once again become a player in FA.

interesting bit on a beal trade:

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/2019-nba-draft-eight-possible-trades-that-need-to-happen-bradley-beal-to-celtics-or-pelicans/

whole piece is an interesting read, however,

3. Boston acquires Beal in blockbuster deal
Celtics get: Bradley Beal
Wizards get: Marcus Smart, Aron Baynes, Guerschon Yabusele, No. 22 pick in 2019 draft, 2020 first-round pick (via Memphis)
Hear me out: The Celtics get an absolute stud in Beal, who keeps them as a legit team whether Kyrie Irving stays or not -- and perhaps Beal makes Kyrie strongly consider staying. I know that 2020 Memphis pick is Boston's crown trade asset, but this is a team ready to win now, and really, how much better of a player than Beal are they going to get in a trade? Boston's top six in the rotation looks like this: Kyrie or Terry Rozier, Beal, Gordon Hayward, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Al Horford (assuming he is back, which it's pretty safe to assume he will be if Boston remains a contender).

For the Wizards, you now have the Nos. 9 and 22 picks in this year's draft, and potentially two lottery picks in 2020 with your own and the Memphis pick, which is top-six protected. If that pick doesn't convey next year, it's unprotected in 2021, and at that point, with the rebuild underway in Memphis, it could easily be a top-three pick. Five lottery picks in the next three years is about the best way to build your future under the weight of that immovable John Wall contract.

The trade proposal is whack. You can always tell when some writer does not fully understand the dynamics of a team.

We need to upgrade our front line. There is no way that Beal is worth our best defender and NBA 1st teamer and our best backup center in Baynes plus 2 first rounders. If Boston is going to spend big assets in a trade it has to be for something better than a SG.
