My guess is that if Thompson is traded, then the Celtics will try to re-sign him.

Because if you're 7'2" and aren't so uncoordinated you trip over your own feet you should be better  than a 3rd string center.  This is even more true if you have any kind of an outside game.

.260 or .250  or .289 or so from 3 the last two years is not that great an outside game. However 2 years previous he shot .368 from 3 on many more attempts, so maybe he just needs court time to regain his stroke. Covid was not kind to anyone's game.

7-2 or 6-2 with a limited skill set doesn’t make him a waste. He is one of 450 that are in the NBA. My nephew is 6-10 and played college ball but never made it to the NBA. If I call him a waste I’d end up with considerable limited use of my limbs. Luke doesn’t look like he can kick anyone’s ass but I wouldn’t test him.

Anyone 250 # with that length has leverage to kick a lot of butt.
