Terry Rozier’s new Hornets contract will make him one of NBA’s 10 richest shooting guards

The Charlotte Hornets and Terry Rozier have agreed to a four-year contract extension, according to a report.

The Observer confirmed Thursday morning with a league source that Rozier will sign a maximum extension worth $97 million that will keep him with the Hornets through the 2025-26 season. He has one season left on his current contract.

The deal will make him one of the NBA’s 10 highest-paid shooting guards, per Spotrac.

Rozier, 27, averaged a career-best 20.4 points per game last season as the Hornets’ starting shooting guard, along with 4.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

He came to the Hornets ahead of the 2019-20 season as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Boston Celtics. The plan at the time was for him to play point guard, but the development of Devonte’ Graham that season gave Charlotte a sharp-shooting guard combo with Rozier sliding over to the No. 2 spot. He shined even more as a shooting guard this past season with the nickname “Scary Terry” thanks to his clutch shooting in the fourth quarter of games to keep the Hornets in playoff contention after injuries to LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward.

But his efforts weren’t enough to end Charlotte’s playoff drought. Injuries to Ball, Hayward and Miles Bridges left too much of the burden on Rozier, who will be entering his seventh season since being drafted 16th overall out of Louisville. Of the eight games in 2020-21 that Rozier played more than 40 minutes, five came in the final 33 days of the season.

Rozier should have a stronger supporting cast this season. In addition to drafting shooting guard James Bouknight and center Kai Jones in the first round, the Hornets signed small forward Kelly Oubre, who should provide a significant scoring option off the bench.

MY NOTE:  TRo averaged 20.4ppg last year, in part, because Ball and Hayward were both out a lot, making Rozier the #1 scoring option.  Think about that.  A team on which their top scorer ppg is Scary Terry.  Ball played 55 games out of 72 and Hayward only 44 while Rozier played in 69.  The Hornets have made the playoffs 2X in the last 10 years, and both appearances were 1st round exits.  Rozier is now making more than Smart ($24.25M for Rozier vs $19.25 for Smart), maybe even A LOT more.  Who would you rather have on your team?  Rozier, who whined about wanting to be a starter when we had point guards that were clearly superior to him (e.g. Kyrie and IT, and even Smart) or team player Mahcus Smaht?

He averaged 18 the year before. Guys that can score and can play defense have more value than guys that are primarily defensive guys especially at the guard position. Terry was top 10 in scoring among shooting guards

I would rather have both of them on my team, Smart and Rozier and if Danny did not knee jerk react maybe Terry may still be with us.

I like guys that want to be good and want to be starters and put in the work required to get there.

Terry Rozier Signs 4-Year, $97M Extension Empty Re: Terry Rozier Signs 4-Year, $97M Extension

Depends upon the perspective. As a Celts fan, I will take Smart and his smaller contract over Rozier and his large contract. We have better offensive players and Rozier will not be a good fit. After all, with current scoring leadership (no Hayward), the Hornets flamed out and didn't make the playoffs last year.

He’s not good enough to be even a 2nd primary scoring option, if he’s the primary or 2nd scoring option your not going to win.
