Jaylen Brown scores 32 points; Celtics rout Wizards 144-102

ESPN BOSTON

BOSTON -- — Jaylen Brown scored 32 points, Jayson Tatum had 22 and the Boston Celtics cruised to a 144-102 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday in their regular-season home finale.

Jockeying for one of the top seeds in the Eastern Conference, Boston posted its 13th win in 16 games with three games left in the regular season.

Derrick White added 17 points, Grant Williams 16 and Payton Pritchard 14 for the Celtics, who finished 28-13 at TD Garden. Tatum had seven assists and six rebounds, while Brown added seven boards with five assists.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kristaps Porzingis each had 17 points for Washington, and Ish Smith finished with 16.

Eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week, the Wizards had won four of five.

Appearing bored by the lack of challenge by Washington, the crowd started the wave in the final quarter, something rarely seen at home games.

Boston opened a double-digit lead late in the first quarter on Tatum's driving layup and was never tested.

The Celtics, who scored 35 points in each of the first two quarters, led by 13 after one quarter and 11 at halftime.

They pushed the lead to 20 — 80-60 — on Al Horford's 3 from the top of the key three minutes into the second half.

Boston led by 25 points after three quarters, allowing coach Ime Udoka to rest his starters.

EXPERIMENTING

Udoka said before the game he's most concerned with how his team's performing going into the playoffs.

"It's a balance, we're worrying about ourselves and how we're playing more so than the opponent and where we're going to fall," he said.

He's also planning on trying different lineups after center Robert Williams III was lost for 4-to-6 weeks following left knee surgery on March 30.

"We need to keep looking at rotations and see what works best for us going forward," he said.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SON

Tatum warmed up before the game, slowly jogging with a resistance band around his waist being held by a member of the team's staff with his 4-year-old son, Deuce, running in front of him.

TIP-INS

Wizards: Opened a three-game road swing Sunday. ... Porzingis scored the Wizards' final eight points of the first half after a relatively poor start.

Celtics: Tatum didn't play the final quarter and Brown saw just a couple of minutes. ... Udoka said Tatum tested his sore right knee to see if he was able to play, as he has since he missed a game in Toronto on March 28. "It's kind of been the process the last few games," the coach said. ... Marcus Smart addressed the crowd before the game on Fan Appreciation Day, thanking them for "being the best sixth man you can ask for."

UP NEXT

Wizards: At the Timberwolves on Tuesday.

Celtics: At the Bulls on Wednesday.

When is Jaylen going to get Player of the Week. He gets this team going every game. Scores in the first quarter where we used to find ourselves behind by 15 plus

Celtics were clicking on all cylinders this afternoon

The jays are hitting their strides at the right time.  JB struggled shooting the 3 ball for a while but in March he made 38.4% from deep in 12 games and also scored 49% FG %.  he has continued his production in April with B2b 32 point games and tremendous efficiency.  He has scored 25 or more points in 9 straight games.

Both Jason and Jaylen continue to work on their assists and it makes the team better.

Everybody got into the act and it was nice to see White put together a string of quality offensive games.  PP continues to just knock shots down.

3 games remaining on the road against the Bulls and b2b vs the Bucks.  They finish in Memphis.

So where will they finish?  We have no idea.  Which team is satisfied with their seeding? Again we have no idea.  Sixers and Heat both won today.

This will be the week when we will finally know exactly what is ahead for us.

The 7, 8, 9 and 10 competition will be resolved.

Rosalie,

To answer your question, 2nd looks fine if you're looking for BKN in your rearview mirror. BKN would currently do no better than capturing the 8th seed. But that's as of today!

Assuming, and we know what assuming does, BKN gets past those two play-in games, the Heat will be waiting for them. I like that matchup. BKN will take care of themselves.

Epic.  Absolutely f'ing epic.  This certainly won't hurt our Margin of Victory stat.

Nobody really looked good on the Wiz except for Certified Celtic Killer Ish Smith and maybe KCP.  It really is amazing how Ish can do his thing when most of us crap bigger than him?  This was a 42 point blow out that would have been a 50+ point deluge of Biblical proportions if not for him being the usual gadfly he is to us.  Rui Hachimura?  I never really understood what people saw in that 9th pick and things are no clearer today.  This might be a good time for me to place my order for Baltic crow.  I bought into the whole "unicorn" hype about Kristaps Porzingis.  So much going for him it's sad he's missing one key ingredient, a heart.  He had Jaylen Brown on him at the frito line and just took a jump shot over him instead of trying to back him down.  He was 5-15 on the night, 2-3 from 3.  That's 3-12 from 2 and that just should not happen with a 7'3", 240# NBA player.  With all due respect to Al and Theis nobody on our team could have stopped him from doing finger rolls ala Wilt Chamberlain all night if he had the heart to fight for position in the restricted area.

Jaylen was magnificent.  I absolutely concur with Rosalie, I think Jaylen is being slighted when it comes to Player of the Week awards.  He's playing in Tatum's shadow and he doesn't deserve that.  If he's Robin to Jayson's Batman he's a big, fully grown Robin on steroids and will kick your ass if you don't take him seriously.  Aside from shooting 12-17 and 4-5 from 3 (setting the tone right from the tip with 3 straight 3s) he also had 5 assists and zero turnovers.  I don't expect him to be a floor general out there, he just needs to watch his assist-to-turnover ratio so he's not hurting the team.  Last night there was no pain at all.

Tatum with 7 assists and 2 turnover.  Another one that has to watch his assist-to-turnover ratio.  Jayson's averaging 4.4apg and 2.8TOpg this season.  That's a respectable 1.57:1 ratio.   Better than I thought it'd be, to be honest.

Of course Jayson Tatum finished with 22 points today, leaving him 1 short of becoming the 7th man in Celtics history to record a 2,000-point season.

Overall we had a season high 39 assists.  39 assists on 56fgm is really good.  It is going to beat us if we have either one of those stats and having both?  Unstoppable.

A record 15 3pt fgm off the bench.  In fact we had 4 bench players in double-digits.  Grant was 4-5 and is now shooting 41.8% from 3, still good for 8th.  And don't look now but Dark Horse Payton Pritchard, shooting 41.2% is in 12th.  Shooting is about rhythm and confidence and it's hard to have either if you're not playing much.  Having a shooting night like last night could be very good going forward.  We have 3 more games to see if it is or just a fluke.  We're rollin'....

Jay King @ByJayKing
yesterday
Grant Williams on progression of defense against him: "I feel like I went through it all this season. You start off, guys are daring you to shoot. Not even halfway through, guys are like getting there, closing out. Then after that they’re like, ‘All right, get him off the line.'"

If you're being scouted, Grant, you're making an impact.

In the last two months (Feb. 3-Apr. 3), the Boston Celtics have both the NBA's #1 offense, and the NBA's #1 defense.

No word on special teams.

Boston Celtics @celtics
yesterday
"Having the sixth man is going to be big for us," Grant Williams says of our crowd in the upcoming Playoffs. "They're loud. They're proud."

It is great to see Jaylen rounding into form getting his strength and touch and burst back. It seems both J’s are finding ways to take less difficult shots, making the game easier for them and then take over the game with a burst and flurry. Make no mistake as good as everyone may be playing, they all play off the do everything J’s. Leading to the greats of the game knew they couldn’t dominate every minute of the game, no one can; but they knew the right time and circumstances within the game to take over and go for the jugular. Our big margins and big runs triggered by hounding defense and efficient offensive movement are a major sign of growth for the J’s and the team. Sometimes it’s in the 3rd, or the 2nd, one game I knew it was over at 16-8. Ime also gets a ton of credit, Stephen A constantly brings up his name anytime the panel discusses CoY.
