West undergoes wrist surgery

Celtics guard Delonte West underwent successful surgery Tuesday to repair a displaced right wrist fracture, according to the team, but no timetable was announced for his return.

West fractured the wrist in last Wednesday's triumph over the New Jersey Nets, crashing hard to the floor after completing a driving layup shortly before halftime. West fractured the same wrist in January of 2009 and missed 16 games -- and nearly two months of activity -- as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Drew Terrono and Dr. Hervey Kimball, and assisted by Celtics team physician Dr. Brian McKeon at New England Baptist Hospital.

West, who sat out the first 10 games of the season due to suspension, appeared in five games, averaging 6.8 points, 2 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per contest.

3 Months minimum. I am guessing from ortho doctors I know sometime March if nothing goes wrong.

"Broken wrist" can mean a lot of things. I still haven't seen anything that clarifies whether the fracture was in one of the small bones in the wrist or a forearm bone near the wrist.

Doc characterizing it as a "compound fracture" added to the uncertainty, but he may have meant "displaced," which is what the team is calling it now. Surgery sounds like inserting screws and maybe even a plate, but the team didn't say.

Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Best case, he'll be back and contributing in the playoffs. I hope so, because I think he's an important piece for the team to be at their best.

the nature of the fracture is indeed unclear, and i'm always a little puzzled when the team doesn't give out more information. it's not like opponents would somehow benefit from knowing more - he's just OUT, for God's sake. so opponents would get no advantage, but fans want to know. why the non-disclosure policy?

and yes, definitely, everyone was REALLY looking forward to his contribution, and i too think he's an important puzzle piece to have available. thank goodness it's not a season-ending situation - at least, apparently.

Delonte is a starter-caliber guard with scrappy defense and ice in his veins.

It is obvious he would be killer for the Celtics off the bench. Get well soon Delonte.

Delonte will be in fine fettle by April when it counts.

Ainge on WEEI 850 today said that they expect West back sometime in March. The organization is giving him a lot of back stage support because of his depression.

I believe Delonte's Celtics role—involving playing 37% of the minutes in games he plays, his court sense, his combo guard chemistry with Nate in the backcourt, his seventh-place ranking among Celtics rotation players in points per 36 minutes, his third-place ranking in assists per 36 minutes, his team-leading three-point shooting percentage, and his defensive intensity in tandem with Quis on other teams' shooters could well provide the extra bench dimension that could put the Celtics over the hump in this year's championship run. As strongly implied by Doc recently, Delonte's presence could also make Doc comfortable with playing five highly productive bench players simultaneously, while contributing mightily to regulating the minutes of Paul and Ray.

Of course his stats are based on a relatively small sample. The likelihood is they would improve as he becomes more comfortable in the Celtics system.

Delonte's absence registers as a major blow to the emerging chemistry of the bench—at least among people who truly understand chemistry.

Marcus has a teamate that broke both bones in his forearm during fall soccer. Think it happened around October 1. He played and played quite well in the scrimage today and has been practicing 2 weeks. Wears a protective pad over the forearm but is no worse for wear and it too was on his non shooting arm. Not sure if it's even comparable as i (we) really don't know what bones are involved with West but I betting 2 months he's back.
